Since we're worried about our government being out to get us, I believe the Second Amendment ought to be updated to allow us to have nuclear weapons. We the people aren't going to win with just guns.

I'm not surprised you're confused. There are two different points here
1. You and this dumbass' reporter thinks getting an assult rifle is as easy as buying a sweater. And you're both wrong.
2. Despite the strictest regulations in the country, and regulations that stop someone from getting a weapon who thought it would be easy... Chicago has the highest gun crime in the country
The answer to point 1... you're both idiots

I think the issue of gun violence in Chicago is a whole other set of issues and factors.
In the case of this thing in Vegas and countless other ones, it seems we have a national sickness of people who want to inflict their pain on as many others as possible while going out in a blaze.
There are multiple common denominators in these but the gun angle can't be ignored or shied away from.
I don't think legislation alone will be the ultimate solver of these problems, but the political courage to discuss these problems and find ways to address them is lacking and that's not surprising given the power of the gun lobby.
In the case of this thing in Vegas and countless other ones, it seems we have a national sickness of people who want to inflict their pain on as many others as possible while going out in a blaze.

Federal law enforcement officials have said that Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock fired weapons outfitted with bump stocks Sunday, leaving 58 dead and hundreds injured in a matter of minutes. Experts have said that audio of the attack makes clear that the shooter unleashed a torrent of bullets faster than he could have fired without adapting his rifles.

“I didn’t know what a bump stock was until this week,” Ryan said at a news conference in Chestertown, Md. “A lot of us are coming up to speed. . . . Having said that, fully automatic weapons have been outlawed for many, many years. This seems to be a way of going around that, so obviously we need to look how we can tighten up the compliance with this law so that fully automatic weapons are banned.”
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders welcomed the NRA’s position and said President Trump wants to be part of a “conversation” about cracking down on bump stocks. “We’re open to having that conversation,” Sanders said during Thursday’s White House press briefing. “We think we should have that conversation, and we want to be part of it moving forward.”

I would say the two responses to these shootings that trouble me the most are when some like to get into semantics about gun terminology or when almost every one of these is made out to be some conspiracy.

It's incredible how slowly this investigation is progressing. CNN reporting tonight that police have changed the timeline. Paddock shot the security guard prior to opening fire on the crowd. Police previously believed the security guard had gone to Paddocks room in response to the shooting.

"If Islamic State did indeed cultivate Paddock, as it has claimed was the case, the group surely has some evidence of its engagements with him. If it does, it may be the case the group is waiting on FBI and other agencies to dismiss its claim of responsibility for the Las Vegas attack before posting contradictory evidence online for the world to see," terrorism analyst Michael S. Smith II tells Newsweek.
"Islamic State has been very focused on undermining confidence among civilians in the West that their technologically-superior governments are competent managers of our collective security," he adds.

Weapons, explosives and electronic devices also were found in the home that Paddock bought in January 2015 in another Del Webb retirement community in Mesquite, Nev., about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
