Since We Had All this Money to Hand Out....Should McCann Have Been Kept?

I think we might have went 3-4 years with mac but I don't think the drop off to Gattis is going to be as big as what some think.

Gattis from what I saw is a pretty darn good defensive catcher. Not to mention most of our pitchers are pretty good at holding runners on now. Maybe Beachy is still pretty easy to run on but he no Hanson.

For all the talk about leadership we have that. Yes we are young but non of these guys are rookies. Gattis would be the youngest as for as PT goes in the everyday lineup.

I think we will be just fine.

Well if the pitchers didn't respect Gattis's game calling skills and leadership behind the plate and the way he receives pitches then they wouldn't say that they love throwing to him, now would they?

No they're not the same thing at all. I'm not saying Gattis can't get there or how far off he is. But it's quite obvious to anyone who watches that Brian McCann is the general of the Braves in the field.

A professional (Eddie Olczyk) predicted that the Canada-USA game was going to be a high scoring affair. Final score was 1-0. So, in terms of posted statistics by amateur sabermetricians and fantasy league team owners, nobody here knows for sure how Gattis will perform in comparison to how McCann would have this upcoming season as a Brave.

Best surface guess is that Gattis won't have a high BA but will put up power #'s and continue to impress the pitching staff.

I guess you didn't see the on field leadership shown by Freddie Freeman and Jason Heyward?

Looking at the kind of hitter Gattis was in the minors and winter ball relative to what he did in the majors last year, I'd say there is a good chance his walk rate goes up to 7-8% from 5.5% last year, his strikeout rate drops from 21.2% to about 20% and his BABIP rises from .255 to about .280. As for his power, it is as good as anyone in the majors. I think he'll hit at least 30 HRs.

With him getting regular playing time at one position there's absolutely no reason to think he won't get to those numbers either.

Here's a question, and maybe it deserves it's own thread, but knowing now that we're spending money, do you think we should've retained Hudson?

Absolutely not. He can take that broke ankle and ERA over 4 to San Fran. He should be ashamed of himself for wanting ANYTHING over 6-7 mil. He's been done.

The issue regarding Hudson is that it would have been hard to make a second year fit into what looks to be a tight payroll situation in 2015.

I think long term, Evan is likely a place holder till Christian Bethancourt is ready to go full time. Evan is obviously a better hitter, but I think if Bethancourt is just passable as a hitter, his defense will make him more valuable long term than Evan Gattis will be behind the plate. If there is one position where I would value defense over offense, it is at catcher.

Wren has flat out stated that Bethancourt will be our everyday catcher as soon as he's ready.

"When he shows he’s ready, he’s going to be our catcher for a long, long time"

I don't think his BB% goes up much. It will likely improve as he gets more regular PT, but someone who walked about 7% in the minors isn't gonna walk about 8% in the majors typically. While there are rule breakers, generally guys walk less and K more in the majors. Granted his numbers are skewed because of his BB rate his rookie ball season, but I think that indicates the type of hitter Gattis is. He's not selective. He's basically Francoeur but a bit more patient and who knows what he is as a hitter, a masher. He'll produce offensively but I doubt there is much change to his BB and K rate unless pitchers just start feeding him slop all the time.

What if Gattis continues to develop?

Exactly. If Gattis improves on his last year numbers slightly he is going to be an extremely valueable catcher. His defensive game is there. He has to prove he can play 120+ games in a year but if he does that I like his future.

He'll be traded for a haul, or maybe moved to LF when Justin leaves.

Maybe if he can get some more experience out there but Upton is going to be here for the next two seasons. Unless there is a regression in his defense there is no reason not to start Gattis at catcher for the next two seasons.

Gattis should be gone within 3 years. He's too old.

He should start this year, and probably part of next year with Bethancourt worked in as well. After that he'll be arb eligible but still kind of cheap, either he can plug into LF if we lose Justin or Jason, or we shop him around if he plays as well as last year and is moderately healthy he should net us a good haul.

Thats fair. It gives Gattis two years to show the Braves what he can be.

Gattis is a big story and you have to consider that as they move into Cobb County. If you can get fans to really root for one of your guys that brings people to ballpark. If Gattis hits 30+ HRs and plays above average defense then you have to play him. He will be worth his weight in gold.
