That Nolan Ryan quote, just like a number of the quotes at that site, are quite old and need to considered in the context of the time they were said. Murphy was winning MVP's in back-to-back seasons in those days, etc.

That said, I believe Murphy should and will be in the Hall of Fame one day.

This is exactly the point. Who better to assess how effective a player was than those he played with and against? During those MVP seasons, nobody thought that quote was ridiculous, and Nolan Ryan also wasn't one to frequently compliment other players.

I understand that and I don't disagree with it. I was mostly pointing out the context for those making out what Ryan said as absurd or crazy. Murphy as I said should be a Hall of Famer IMO.

It's fair to say, Murph had a sick peak. But he fell off fast and had some not amazing seasons in between. I would put Murph in the hall, but I wouldn't compare him to other more deserving guys myself.

We all know this. Whatever the exact causes of Murph's drop-off was, news didn't travel as fast in those days. Maybe there was a loss of bat speed, but as mentioned in my previous post in this thread, the roster compositions of the late 80's Braves teams did not help the cause. Maybe he wasn't seeing the best pitches to hit without protection in the lineup. Still, scouts would've been able to detect a loss of bat speed, and the Mets & Padres made significant offers (cited multiple times by me here and at Scout) that did not lead a completed transaction by Cox.

I think he and Andruw have similar issues that hir them. Murph was his knees, Druw was his knees and back. Murphy had a really big looping swing, when his knees went, I think his speed was there but there was a hitch added, and when the hitch was compounded with inevitable loss of bat speed of getting older it truly fell off the cliff.
