Because it will give guys like Larry Walker a higher percentage to remain on the ballot. Go to espn.com's baseball page there's a 2 minute video with his explanation.
Kurkjian says he sees Smoltz on the outside looking in this year. He says he sees 3 going in for sure but sees Smoltz outside. Hope that's not true, Smoltz at 88% tracking right now.

One of the most impressive things for me about Smoltz that proves he should be in the HOF (and no one ever talks about it) was when John had that one year where he had to completely reinvent his pitching mechanics to be a side-armer.....and STILL dominated everyone, maybe even moreso. Of course, it seemed to have contributed to his having to undergo arm surgery again. But my god, that was one of the most impressive feats I've ever seen on the baseball diamond in terms of a person finding a way to be a winner.

I think Smoltz and Biggio are the same type of HOFer...they did whatever was necessary, did it well, teams feared them, and fans loved them. A big congrats to those two players who dogged it out every game.
