Yeah, its not like we can hold a gun to his head. I get that Heyward is a damn good player with the potential to be special but people are acting like we are about to lose Mike Trout to free agency.
Trout? No. But he is our best player.
Eh, I'm still not sure he is out best player but he is sure up there for consideration.
Again, I just do not think you pay a premium for a defense after a guys first 10 years in the league and that is what we would be paying for Heyward with the "hope" that he becomes a more consistent better hitter.
I don't see making him a "near market offer" being a smart move for us at this point, much less understand why anyone would think Hart's wrong for not doing so. The two sides were obviously significantly apart on what he should get prior to last season.
Yes, he won another Gold Glove. However, his power did not improve at all, and he (or his agent anyway) feels like he should get paid like a middle of the order bat (J-Up and Freeman).
He says publicly in every interview that he wants to stay. Let him play out this season without committing to him long-term. If he hits 12-15 bombs before the break approach him then. If he's not interested and we still have Justin, approach Justin.
He wants to be a run producer and to be paid like one - treat this year as his shot to prove he wants to be (and more importantly - CAN BE) one here.

Please let's not act like he's a .600 OPS hitter with no room to grow. He isn't strictly a defensive player. He just happens to be elite there, and not anywhere else (yet).
Honestly I understand both sides. Hart's a smart guy and realizes he cannot commit to $20M per year for Heyward's current production. Heyward realizes that if he has a big year this year he could be in line for an absurdly large contract. It makes no sense for either side to sign an extension right now.

Don't get me wrong, I want Heyward around, but you can't force him to sign a contract. We don't know what Hart can/should offer. Things like this usually sort themselves out and I don't see why Hart should jump the gun.

Based on Hart's comments, it's actually not that obvious that Heyward unequivocally wants to reach free-agency: Hart just "assumes" it's "not the right time" or whatever feckless vagueness he was quoted as saying.

Well, less assumption and more reading what limited information has emerged from reports like these: it appears, so far at least, that our wonderful new super-GM hasn't engaged in extension discussions with either Justin Upton or Jason Heyward, while other reported comments make it appear he currently doesn't plan to do so. The latter is very stupid, if true.
