So, no Jason extension?!

I can confirm for everyone here that Billy Ryan and John Coppolella have had extension discussions with Casey Close at Excel and that Heyward and the Braves aren't in the same ballpark. Close is valuing Heyward closer to $200m over a long term deal. The Braves don't want to pay that much. Hence Hart saying what we've heard over the past few days.

Interesting. He should easily get that from somebody next offseason.

Surprising that there is no middle ground, using the Freeman deal as a baseline.

Apparently they are apart on both years and AAV by a "significant margin"-- I have no details as to what that means... but I can tell you with Stanton projected to make over $300M, Casey has a good case for Jason at or slightly above $200 and the Braves aren't comfortable at that price point.

Anyone who thinks the Braves haven't had discussions are kidding themselves.

Wow

Harsh reality that we are a mid market team is about to hit fans like a 10 ton anvil.

The assumption they haven't said a word to his people about negotiations was absurd.

Yep, and baseball owners (or sports teams owners in general) are so stupid. We finally get excited of the possibility of increased revenue from the new stadium and payroll going up modestly 10-20 million and think we actually become competitive when it comes to bidding in the FA market or keeping homegrown talent, when in fact it's just like it's always been, salaries will substancially increase compared to our modest payroll bumps and we will be where we have always been (which is a middle market team).

Compound that with the fact that Wren spent money like a drunk sailor and we are commited to too much salary for unproductive players, and now most finally realize why the organization and Hart need to make some tough hard decesions that most fans will not like nor understand to keep us competitive now and in the future.

Not sure the length of the contract, in these discussions, but unless Close is talking something absurd (like 4/$200-million), I think that's a mistaken valuation on the part of the Braves.

Like I said in the other thread, for me it's been less about the idea that "they haven't said a word to his people" and more an issue of the general posture they've had for several years regarding extenting Heyward long-term.

Makes me wonder if we ever had the opportunity to lock up Jason, say a few years back. That was probably our only chance, and we would have had to gamble long term since he wasn't producing to what was expected.

I'd like to extent Heyward, but not to that extend.

12/320 are the new numbers coming out...

26.667 million per year for 12 years.

Sounds about right although the last part of that deal is going to be bad. But they are almost always bad and just part of the price you pay. Stanton is worth more per year right now so it evens out.

Stanton will produce just fine over the course of his contract because he is already such a good hitter.
