So You're Frank Wren (Or Whoever's In His Office This Winter)...

We'll find a way to dump BJ's salary. There are various ways to do it without moving Kimbrel. Most likely is we will pair him up with one of our better prospects (Bethancourt and Hursh are the most likely imo) and we will take back a pitcher with a significant remaining contract (such as Buehrle, Edwin Jackson or RA Dickey). Blue Jays will be looking for center fielder and would also like to acquire a young catcher. Cubs will be happy with either Bethancourt or Hursh.

I guess we just value closers differently. I get it that Kimbrel is not a typical closer. But if we could get rid of BJ, it's totally worth dumping it. If you say no to doing that, you're essentially valuing Kimbrel as a $25M player, which is just crazy.

That's not true.

I think the best course of action with BJ is to do a three-way trade where the third team (doesn't take BJ) pays some of his contract to the team that does.

No, it's saying you value Kimbrel as a 15M dollar player which he is.

I don't really see the point in pairing BJ with someone to get another team to take him. However much someone will take straight up we should take it. Teams are not going to offer a significant amount of money for our prospects. Pair Hursh with BJ and maybe they eat another 5 million total on his contract. That's not worth it in my opinion. If we pair Gattis or someone else then we still have to replace their production. Maybe I would be okay with pairing BJ with Andrelton, kill 2 birds with one stone in terms of getting better on offense.

BJ/Andrelton/Johnson for McCann/Prado/Yankees pay all of Prado ' s salary and all of Brian ' s salary his last year. If I was Wren I would then ask Brian to defer some of his salary to his last contract year to average out what the Braves owe him per year to a more manageable level. A little bit like they did with Hampton.

None of us know the details of the teams payroll plans, but my presumption is that moving BJ's salary will make it a lot easier to extend both Jason and Justin.

As for how teams value prospects, there is some data out there on how much say a player ranked 80 on the Top 100 prospects list is worth in surplus value (wins minus salary). There is a summary of the studies at the Camden Depot website. But a player like Bethancourt is worth close to $20 mil. In effect I'm advocating giving that up for a chance to keep both Jason and Justin.

Studies may say that but you still have to get a team to agree to it. I can't think of many cash for prospect deals to compare but I think we got 12 million for Andy Marte and he was a top 10 prospect at the time. And that was with Renteria BJing it up in Boston.

1. Fire Fredi Gonzalez and our two-headed pitching coach disaster

2. Get rid of BJ Upton

3. Give Santana a qualifying offer

4. Resign Boni, don't let Doumit anywhere near this team again
