Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

An important note, as the stats lay murder may be down but several other categories including rape and felony assault are up BIGLY

The fact of the matter is that Oklahoma has had a higher homicide rate than New York City for many years. And it aint hard to dig up the gory details. They are broadcast by the local news every day.

And of course sex trafficking, including involving children, is a not so little secret of rural and small town America. Sometimes with local law enforcement among the traffickers.

There is also this:

Life expectancy in 1970: Oklahoma 71.1 New York 70.5

Life expectancy in 2020: Oklahoma 74.1 New York 77.7

4 more years of life. That's something.

And this:

1970 11% of adults in NY had a college degree versus 8% in Oklahoma

2020 the gap has grown so that 37% in New York had one versus 26% in Oklahoma

And this happened during a period when the "premium" paid to people with a college degree grew sharply

No place is perfect. New York or Oklahoma. I've spent time in both and think both have their charms (shoutout to the fluffy pillows at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa and to Billy Sims' BBQ). But these growing gaps in metrics measuring education and health outcomes should make us think.

I’d think most in NYC spent at least 4 years of their life in traffic

I avoided driving in the City for a long time. But then discovered driving isn't so bad. Finding parking (at a reasonable price), however, is another story.

Mg guess is the murders in Oklahoma are more likely to be committed by a friend or family member.

The murders in NYC are more likely to be random

But the woman lit on fire the other day should rest easy that she would have died much sooner living in Oklahoma
