Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

There are lots of anecdotes of crime everywhere. Such as an Oklahoma man slaughtering his entirely family in grisly fashion. And yes the homicide rate in red states is higher and the gap over blue states is widening. ymmv. iiwii.

Maybe in n out will move this location to Oklahoma

You will be pleased to know that Oklahoma recently executed an inmate convicted of decapitating a 10-year old girl as part of a cannibalistic fantasy.

Per his own confessional, Underwood lured the girl into his apartment, before he beat her with a cutting board, smothered her to death, sexually assaulted her body and nearly decapitated her.

Don't sleep on Oklahoma.

Happy to hear red states actually remove monsters from society

The number of murders has climbed sharply in Oklahoma the past five years. From 63 in 2018 to 243 in 2023.

Obviously, more deterrence is needed!

I'm glad folks in Oklahoma are convinced that the murder rate in New York City is higher. Safety through delusion.

I feel like this is a situation where both sides are just right and wrong. It’s empirically true that murder rates are higher in places like Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma than they are in New York City. It’s also true that by living in New York City more murder is happening around you because of how many people live there. If I lived in a major city and suddenly technology and work policies allowed me to do a job from anywhere that I used to have to live in NYC or SF for, I’d happily move somewhere with less congestion and a higher quality of life. It doesn’t mean blue states chased me away or that they were letting too many murders happen. It’s just nice for many people to not have to live with 8 million other people.

My son recently returned to San Francisco after grad school. His job offered him the chance to work remotely. For him it is a close call. He likes doing standup as a hobby and San Francisco has the venues (most of them quite seedy) for that. Most other parts of the country don't. So he trudges to the Tenderloin District (the biggest baddest scariest part of San Francisco) several times a week to work on his material. For now he is staying in San Francisco. A year from now he might decide a place like Cincinnati is for him. I don't see him decamping for a small town anytime soon.

Yeah, by no means am I suggesting the cities aren’t for some. 8 million people don’t work in high-powered NYC jobs that they can’t find elsewhere and there’s a reason for that beyond none of them having other options. But it’s certainly not surprising that of those large populations that a percentage of them might be open to living in cheaper or less condense population centers and I don’t understand why the right seems to think it’s just to escape violence.

My daughter lived and worked in New York City. Now she lives and works in London, which she calls a civilized version of NYC. She loves both but prefers London. I would agree. But like her brother she sees a lot of benefits to living in a densely populated place. She loves all the choices of pubs, museums, restaurants and culture.
