Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

eh...per capita GDP growth in rural America has been worse than other parts of the country including urban areas

life expectancy and death rates also have trended in a truly dismal direction in rural America

i don't ask them to turn to Dems for salvation...they seem really happy in their toothless liberty...why tinker with perfection

a curious mind would wonder why the net migration keeps widening every year between blue and red states. as a business person, if my business is declining, I spend a lot of effort on introspection and understanding why is causing the decline... why don't my customers want to buy what im selling anymore?

but, you're an academic... please do continue your dental record research

eh...population growth in Florida by decade

1970s 3.0 million
1980s 3.2 million
1990s 3.0 million
2000s 2.8 million
2010s 2.7 million

i don't see no acceleration

Migration has changed in California. And some of it is due to bad policy. A policy-made housing crisis for which the Dems as the party in power do deserve the blame. But the body politic in California, especially Northern California, is anti-growth. So policy in a sense is responding to the popular will. Not that this makes it wise.

So if the Dems and the libs are to blame for the housing crisis in California, who is to blame for the toothlessness and mortality crisis in red states. Or do we blame forces of nature or distance between hospitals for that.

I cant remember when RDS was elected and when there was a head cold that blue states decided to imprison their populace over

covid did turbocharge migration to Florida for a couple years

but that tide is receding rather fast (down 80% from the 2022 peak) and as a side effect we're seeing quite a correction in house prices

not that i'm crediting or blaming RDS for either development

I don't agree with Vivek on many thangs. But I agree that state policy is an area of opportunity for improving health outcomes. I hope he and others of whatever political persuasion running for state office will give more attention to such matters. I hope Vivek (or whoever is Ohio's next governor) will be humble enough to look at the successes some of Ohio's neighboring states have had in cutting lung disease through effective messaging on tobacco products. Something with respect to which Ohio has adopted a more "libertarian" approach.

More from Vivek's announcement today. I think this is a fine start to his campaign.

"I will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country to start and grow a new business. I will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country to raise a young family. I'll lead Ohio to be the top state in the country where our kids get a world-class education in math, reading, writing, critical thinking, and physical education. I will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country where we give our kids the toolkit to think of themselves not as victims but as victors in a competitive global economy.

"We will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country where we embrace capitalism and meritocracy instead of apologizing for it. We will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country that takes a hatchet to red tape over-regulation and bureaucracy. We will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country where we lead the way in the sectors of the future, from semiconductors to aerospace."

"I will lead Ohio to be the top state in the country where patriots across America actually flock to, instead of Florida and Texas. I will lead Ohio to be the state of excellence in America."

I don't think he will succeed in turning Ohio into a big destination for migrants from other states. But his goals with respect to technology, education and a culture of growth and competitiveness are highly commendable. I think he made the right choice in getting out of DOGE and running for governor instead. Although maybe the choice was made for him.

I know per capita GDP growth is a confusing topic for some. But rural per capita GDP growth has been significantly slower than the rest of the country, including those urban areas that are supposedly falling apart. But I hear the folks there are content in their toothless liberty.
