Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

you seem to really struggle with understanding lagging effects. You see - California is an economic super power today thanks to the work republican government put into it in 1900s. Likewise, if California was ahead of the curve in their nanny state on smoking cigarettes in the 1990's... we wouldn't see the impact of that for 20 or 30 years. It has nothing to do with the complete train wreck of the current government, and the lagging effects will make themselves clear over time (as they've already begun to do so)
I'm not talking just about California. Red states have fallen way behind blue states and other countries when it comes to life expectancy and other basic health outcomes in recent decades. It has nothing to do with lagged governance from some imaginary golden era of Republican rule. I could replace California with New York and any other blue state. Oklahoma had a slightly longer life expectancy than New York in 1970. Now it is a difference of over six years. And not in Oklahoma's favor.

As the article makes clear, NIMBY is still alive and kicking.

“The jig is up,” Taner told SFGATE in a phone interview. “The state of California is railroading multiuse, and we’re all getting the shaft. ... Our quality of life is going down the drain.”

I don’t see how people can do it with an straight face

If the Va Supreme Court can’t strike down the terminology “restore fairness”, Va is absolutely cooked

As of May 5, 2026, severe homeless encampments and related infrastructure issues continue to be a major issue in California, with recent activity highlighting safety risks. [1]
  • 110 Freeway Fire (May 5, 2026): According to the Los Angeles Times, a fire in a homeless camp beneath the 110 Freeway in San Pedro forced closures of the northbound lanes due to potential structural damage to the freeway tunnel. KTLA noted the fire was linked to a homeless encampment.
  • Encampment Fires & Safety: Recent imagery and reports show encampments remaining a safety concern, with reports of fires underneath freeway routes in the LA area.
  • Continued Encampments: Despite past clearing efforts, encampments have returned to areas like Venice as reported on Instagram, while other encampments, such as the one in the Westlake District near a post office, show ongoing issues with density.
  • Rising Senior Homelessness: Images show that older adults (aged 55+) are a rapidly growing, vulnerable population within the California homeless crisis as documented on Instagram. [1]

I was biking in Manhattan last weekend and I have a simple piece of legislation that I’m taking feedback on before I formally propose:

If your bicycle does not have a motor, you should remain in the bicycle lane. If your bicycle has a motor, you should be in the road with the other motor vehicles.

These dudes on their e-bike/motor scooters are all over the bike lanes and come flying up on your left and right sides completely silently. They can cover the whole city in bike lanes…I’ve had so many close calls I think I’m over even trying.
