Soroka Update

Per Bowman, Soroka has thrown off the mound 5 times so far and will soon transition to fielding drills off the mound. Time frame is still post-all star break and they are not considering transitioning him to the bullpen to rush the rehab.

That’s awesome news. IF and that’s a big if he comes back and helps the big club at all this year if would be a huge boost

Soroka May still be the guy to extend once he gets back on the mound. They only control him through his age 26 season, which will be 2024.

His arb salaries will be pretty low due to the injuries, so an extension giving him something like $10M total for 2023/24, plus 1-2 option years covering 2025/26 might be a great value move for the Braves with limited downside.

Soroka might bite since he’s been so injury prone he might want a nice ~$15M guarantee while still being able to hit the FA market before his age 30 season.

It all obviously hinges on him actually pitching at the MLB level in 2022 or 23 though.

Still think you give Fried something that looks like the Berrios deal if he's interested (tacking some salary on to make this the first year of it), but I'm not as averse to gambling a little on a longer-term deal for a front of the rotation arm as many are.

With Jansen, Smith, and Duvall coming off the books this winter you'd have the flexibility to sign another horse (Clevinger/Manaea/Musgrove/Eovaldi as potential options) to pair with Max at the top in the event you choose to decline the Morton option.

If he accepts, he never makes anything approaching market value. You'd then have he, Acuna, Olson, and Harris under control through 2028, and Ozzie through 2027. If you were able to get one of the San Diego guys to take a higher-AAV 4-5 year deal you'd have your #1 and #2 slots controlled for that whole period, and neither would be older than 35ish at the end of the contracts.
