Spring Training 2015

Outman is pitching his way out of "lock" position in the bullpen, but he still may be the best LHRP we have.

I wonder if they'd consider Stults in a relief role.

If so, that is stupid because the two run homer today was against a righty and his previous so called bad outing was where he got no defense. You know what you get with Outman, someone that dominates lefties and isn't good vs righties. He is a lefty specialist and a good one at that. If we keep dropping good relief pitchers over ST performances we'll end up with a weak bullpen.

Would love to tuck Ciriaco away at Gwinnett to get a longer look at him. Think he could be another of those super-sub kind of guys. Would be nice to see him play with Peraza and get some reps in CF. Would be nice to have a handful of guys around that are infielders that we try to convert to OFs instead of the opposite like Cunningham. Should be much easier to approach those types that way.

Pedro is on a minor league deal so he should end up there anyway unless he makes the team. As far as CF goes, he tried it already and played it a little with Boston in the Majors in 2012. But he wasn't good enough there, he is better in left field though. He has mostly played second, short and third in the minors and Majors. I'd say his best position is second, but he also seems pretty good at third too. Plus he's good enough at short to play there in a role similar to Gosselin's role with us.

I don't think they'll be evaluating him on his performance against RHH. He has pitched very poorly against LHH this Spring and hit the first LHH he faced today with a pitch. I think he'll ultimately make the team due to his track record and the fact that he is the best LHRP we have in camp. They can't exactly feel great though about running him out there in high leverage situations. Lack of a LH setup reliever is a weakness of this team.

He hasn't faced many lefties yet and hits where you get no defense are not the fault of the pitcher (unless you're Mark Bowman). Further, his track record against both lefties and righties speaks for itself. He dominates one and stinks vs the other.

The only thing they shouldn't feel great about is trusting Fredi to use him correctly. I know I sure don't. :)

I'm still really big on Jackie Bradley personally. I don't think Wandy would get him, but I'd probably trade Wandy for him if the Boston brass would do it.

Yeah, I'm at the point that I'd love to acquire him.

Stock has to be low, but no way they let him go for Wandy, IMO. But the fact that his stock can't really go much lower, PLUS the Sox have a very crowded OF, make it very possible to get him for a good deal.

I know Dalyn will hate this, but I wonder if they might trade someone like Cody Martin for him. I don't think I'd be in favor, and I don't think we'd do it, but I bet Boston would make that deal. Just a thought.

Cody Martin was already left available for pretty much nothing in the Rule 5 draft, so I would think the Braves would be all over that deal if offered. I think it is Boston who would want more in such a trade rather than the Braves.

BTW, I know ST stats mean little to nothing but Bradley is hitting .345 with an .889 OPS so far this Spring Training. That's a big improvement from last ST for him where he put up a .476 OPS, so it could improve his stock a bit (if only in the short term).

Yeah, good point. But Martin is having a really solid spring, and JBJ is really kind of pointless for them right now. He's not even in the running to be a starter. But at the same time, Martin may not be better than what's at the back of the Sox rotation, anyway.

The Rockies have granted right-hander Jhoulys Chacin his unconditional release, tweets MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. The Rockies and Chacin had agreed to a one-year, $5.5MM deal to avoid arbitration back in January.

The move comes one day after Chacin allowed four runs on seven hits during three innings of work against the Dodgers. “I’m surprised,” Chacin told Nick Groke of The Denver Post (Twitter link). “But my heart will always be with the Rockies.“

My comments: I am surprised by this move as Chacin has put up some decent numbers in the past. Which is impressive given where he pitched most of his games. He shouldn't have to wait long to find a new team given the need for starting pitching.

I'd take him.

The problem is that they can still tuck Bradley away in Pawtuckett. Of course they'd still have 2 CFs there to start the season with Castillo likely to start there as well. They'd obviously much prefer to move Victorino, Craig, or Nava, but I just don't see us being interested in any of them other than Craig - and then only IF the price was right.

BTW, Colorado just released Jhoulys Chacin - I wouldn't be surprised if Hart's not already on the phone with his reps. He wouldn't be a bad guy to bring in at the minimum to see if Roger could help him with his sinker.

I expect they'll move one of the veterans you mention too. As far as Chacin goes, I expect he'll ask for about what he'd made with Colorado if not more (around 5.5 million) and some team might give it to him. And I am just not sure how much we could offer if we're still in talks with Olivera. Then again another report says he is struggling to regain his velocity (someone said he was hitting around 89 mph with his fastball), that wasn't mentioned in the other report. I could certainly see Chacin cost being cheaper if that is indeed the case with him.

PS: The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders tweets Colorado will save $4.14MM by releasing Chacin now.

Would at least be interesting to see what kind of package it would take for BOTH Bradley and Craig. Given the fact that we've apparently got a little wiggle room financially, adding the two of them, Olivera, and cutting Johnson and Callaspo loose (or eating some money if someone would take them) would suddenly make this offense look really good...

CF- Bradley, 2B- Peterson, 1B- Freeman, 3B- Olivera, RF- Markakis, LF- Craig, SS- Simmons, C- Bethancourt/Pierzynski

Bench- Bethancourt/Pierzynski, Gomes, EY/Perez, Gosselin

Chacin is a free agent after this season, so if we were to sign him we'd need to trade him at the deadline or re-sign him if we liked him enough. He is only 27 and I've always liked him personally.

It all starts with Fredi.

Been saying it all winter, Fredi is going to have a legendary managerial season for the ages when we sneak in the wild card and make some noise in the playoffs.

In the off chance that we get Olivera, CJ would be even more expendable. Gonna need to eat $ to move him though.

I’d still rather see Olivera in Left. Feels like a position of greater need in the short, but especially long-term.

I DO expect at least some bounce back from CJ, and I’d love to see Peterson and Peraza in the IF together next year. Or sooner.
