Spring Training 2015

The Mets have placed young outfielder Cesar Puello on outright waivers, ESPN.com’s Adam Rubin reports. Out of options and a roster spot, Puello has long seemed destined to be headed either to another organization or off of the Mets’ 40-man.

My comments: The Braves should be interested in Puello given their need for OF help including someone who can play CF. Puello is skilled enough that someone with a worse record than us could put a claim in first (including the Phillies). Also, today is his 24th birthday so he got waived on his birthday. Happy birthday! :)

PS: My guess is we don't get him even if we put a claim in, Phillies shouldn't pass on him either given their outfield and injuries, etc. They have room on their 40-man too so would seem a no-brainer for Philly.

Puello is an interesting player. He's got nice minor league numbers against LHP like Eury. Probably not a great defender in CF, but it might be worth a shot considering the 4A guys we have on our 40-man. He was caught up in the Biogenesis scandal, so I'm not sure that the powers-that-be will deem him a "championship-caliber player".

Bowman calls the reverse splits! Also speculates that we could add another RP outside the organization. Yes, please.

"I've heard some great stuff [about McKirahan]," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I haven't seen him, but I'm sure we'll see some video of him and then see him tomorrow. A couple of our scouts really like him. He's left-handed, and we're looking for some left-handed help out of the bullpen."
Actually, the Braves are looking for even more help to fill their bullpen. But their need to gain some left-handed assistance in this department became more definitive when Josh Outman began dealing with left shoulder discomfort after extending his recent struggles during last week's outing against the Pirates.
. . .
To be an effective reliever, McKirahan will need to prove more versatile than he was as he produced reverse splits last year. Left-handed hitters produced a .301 batting average and .370 on-base percentage against him. Right-handed hitters were limited to a .203 and .236 OBP.

Looks like the Braves prefer a RHH for the last OF spot. We've got to be able to do better than Benson though.

With A.J. Pierzynski, Kelly Johnson and Alberto Callaspo standing as locks to make the roster, the Braves need to fill two more bench spots. Phil Gosselin seems to be the most likely internal candidate to fill one of those spots. The Braves are looking to fill one of the bench vacancies with a right-handed hitter who has the ability to serve as Eric Young Jr.'s backup in center field until Melvin Upton Jr. returns from his left foot ailment. Although the switch-hitting Todd Cunningham fits this description and is an above average defender, he has not overwhelmed the Braves enough to be guaranteed this role.
Thus, Benson, who has recorded just three hits in 12 Grapefruit League at-bats, remains a candidate. The Braves are also still exploring other options via the trade and free agent markets.

Given the pattern of the past week, I was wondering if they were auditioning Benson. Toolsy guy who hasn't been able to stay healthy and get the tools to translate.

Cunningham should be traded if they aren't going to play him again this year. Just let someone have him who will. Sad.

Fredi - "...guys like Chase Utley and Ryan Howard ....They don’t care if you’re playing a backyard scrimmage game or a regular season game, you better bring the lunch pail.”

Teheran - "What's a lunch pail?"

We're missing the veteran presence of Gerald Laird here. That guy never forgot to bring the lunch pail.

My least favorite Brave ever, and it's not particularly close.

#Braves LHP Josh Outman saw doctors in ATL earlier this week. Says no structural damage in shoulder/arm. Soreness in clavicle area

@KevinMcAlpin
#Braves option RHP Brandon Cunniff to Triple-A. OF Joe Benson added to the Non-Roster Invite list for the remainder of camp.
