Spring Training Gamethread/Discussion

Speaking of, does anyone else think "simplified swing" as officially replaced "Best shape of this career" in the cliché book?

It may be cliche, but just watching the games so far, I like BJ's approach much better than last year. He may not have eye popping statistical results thus far in Spring Training but his swing looks much better.

FRIDAY box breakdown

Braves 4 total hits.

Heyward 2-2, HR (He will TEAR IT UP as leadoff man)

Johnson 1-3

Pena 1-3 (.429)

Wood 3 IP, 0 R, 2 K (0.00)

Martin needs to be sent to minors complex (0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 ER)

Graham faces only 3 batters (two hits) 0.1 IP MAJOR UH OH

Lamm cleaned up Graham's mess, getting DP ball.

Pena might surprise everyone and be the guy who takes over second.

If Uggla is just owl pellets again and forces Fredi's hand, I wouldn't be surprised if Pena got the call before La Stella or Pastor.

In other news, Jason Heyward is going to make himself a ton of money this season.

As long as Pena is asked to never attempt to bat right-handed.

Problem with starting Pena is that you are eliminating his greatest strength...to play all over the diamond.

They are also good hitters. Pena is not.

I wasn't saying Pena is as good a hitter as Prado and Zobrist. Just making the point that using a player as a starter doesn't mean you can no longer exploit his defensive versatility.

How does it not limit his versatility? If he is relied on to start at second and Simmons needs a day then what do you do?

Pena to short. One of Uggla/La Stella/Pastornicky/Goselin to second. Not exactly rocket science. Joe Maddon's been doing that with Zobrist for a while.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying Pena is as good as Zobrist or that Fredi is as good as Maddon.

LaStella is not going to be ont he team IMO unless he is getting everyday AB's.

Past is an option.

Uggla will not be on the team if he isn't the starter as well IMO. he will be a waste of a roster spot.

He's been a waste for over a year now.
