Probably a blessing for the Giants anyway since they're not inclined to start a rebuild while they've still got MadBum and Posey (and lots of holes). They can spend about the same amount of money and plug 2 holes by signing Moustakas and Cain and probably be closer to being in the mix if their pitching bounces back.

The Marlins best play might be to hold Stanton for a year and then trade him to whichever of those teams don’t sign Harper.

It's a cautionary tale, I guess, but for a lesson that should be pretty obvious: don't provide a no-trade clause if you can't reconcile yourself to said player spending the entirety of that contract with your team.

Players are born into the league without choice in where they play; and, though they're well compensated for their efforts (relative to the average American, at least, though not necessarily relative to ownership), it must be pretty nice to finally have a say in your employer and home city. I don't think it's unreasonable at all for a player to want to exercise some control in staying in that organization/city, once they've finally earned the opportunity of election, or not going somewhere they'd rather not be, if things fall apart. Commitment goes both ways.
 
He is guaranteed to opt out now. I would hold out with those four teams and make sure I get great value back. The marlins can now just trade around him and let him draw fans for what. Two more years. Then he can opt out and negotiate with whoever he wants. But I would not let him hold me hostage.

I would love to see the marlins trade everyone worth a crap except Stanton. See how he enjoys losing 110 games

What’s new? The previous owners signed him to the contract. No one made them.

The new owners bought the team knowing the contract. No one made them. They thought they could leverage him out of the contract but he’s smart enough to not let that happen.

He has a no trade. He could say I won’t accept a trade anywhere and be within his rights. He hasn’t done that. He gave them 4 teams he would consider.

The fish don’t like it because it limits there options but they were always limited

Well of the teams mentioned...

Cubs- Dont really have a top tier farm now. I guess they could move a Baez/Schwarber and other pieces.

Astros- Gotta save money for current player extensions.

Yankees- Actually make alot of sense, they have some players to move to fit his salary in (Ellsbury, Headley, Castro would about cover it) and a good farm.

Dodgers- Been reported money is the main holdup with them even though Stanton wants to play for the Dodgers the most.

It will be interesting to see what happens, dont think they can keep him after all thats gone on. And Stanton's decision is holding up every other FA move as well.

The Marlins making that deal with Stanton never made a lick of sense.

I can't fault a player for exercising a provision that he specifically bargained for and the club agreed to give, particularly when every party knew exactly this circumstance was the thing the player was afraid of and had every right to expect would happen.

I'll never understand the Marlins front office's reasoning on that deal. Wishful thinking? They know that kind of commitment doesn't work long term for that franchise.

Braves could take them both off their hands if it cost very little outside taking money? Gardner would be an upgrade in RF to start the season, and in LF once Acuna's up, if the Braves could dump Kemp (and/or Markakis); or he could be turned around in a trade. And Headley's only got a year left on his contract, and is as viable an option at 3B as any the Braves have now.
 
Definitely can see the Braves as the 3rd team that could make Stanton to the Yankees work. Quite a few scenarios are plausible if the Braves just take on some of their less valuable contracts.

AA is just the guy to make something really interesting happen too.

We take Headley, Ziegler, and a couple good prospects and get Ozuna back
