Stanton

Yankees get the reigning MVP plus $30M in cash after his opt out (something I’ve suggested for months) for a guy they were looking to get off the roster to clear room for younger players and some lower level prospects who are so inconsequential they weren’t mentioned until after the fact.

This is a huge win for the Yankees.

Sherman reporting they only get the 30 if he does not opt out

Does anyone know how this trade affects the Yankees luxury tax standing? Do they still have to clear salary?

Maybe Headley?

Do they even care about resetting the luxury tax anymore now that they won’t be bidding on Harper?

Oh, they will be. A Judge, Harper, Stanton outfield for 2019. The rich get richer.

Headley or Gardner will likely be moved

And just do happens to go to the team Jeter spent his entire career too. I guess this is what MLB wants, big markets stealing good players from smaller markets. With salaries going higher this is going to be more the norm than always.

Baseball has to correct the absurd advantages big market teams have. Can't have a NBA situation here. It hurts the game.

Machado's more likely than Harper.

Stanton's cheaper than Harper and Machado fills a bigger need. If they feel they can go after him.

They're only like 140-150 in payroll now with arb and with Stanton. I could see them move Headley though still.

MLBTR said in their offseason outlook they have about $25M to spend. Swapping Stanton for Castro leaves them around $10M to spend.

If they want to bring Sabathia back on a short deal they will have to clear one of their contacts, and with Torres and Andujar almost ready to go, the most logical one to part with is Headley.

Stanton for Castro and lower level prospects. Castro helps compensate for Stanton’s salary.

That means the Marlins will have to shed even more payroll.

This turned into a disaster for the Marlins.

Been saying it was going to all along. A smart team took advantage of the position that the Marlins were in.

I told everybody here that the Marlins were in a bad spot and would have to give Stanton away to get to where they want to be on payroll. If you looked at the numbers and the fact that Stanton had a NT clause it was obvious.

Now, everybody's pissed because the Yankees were smart enough and aggressive enough and lucky enough (being a place Stanton would be willing to go) to get him for peanuts in talent and a minor gamble (for them) of money.

The Marlins got a guy not in the Yankees top 30 and their #9 prospect according to MLB. They also got a more powerful slower version of Dee Gordon, on a shorter deal by a year but at similar AAV. Plus they had to send a contingent $30M to get it done.

The Marlins aren't done either IMO if they are to be believed about where they want payroll to be but they will get more out of the others they move unless they move Prado.

if Yelich is on the block, AA needs to get in on him.

He's on a great contract, i'd trade some of our top prospects for him.

Yelich-Ender-Acuna would be absurd.
