What happens if the Braves draft someone with the 3rd pick who doesn't sign?

1) Are the Braves allowed to allocate the slot money associated with pick #3 elsewhere?
2) Is next year's draft class expected to be more top heavy whereby having picks #1 and #4 might not seem like a bad idea?

One drawback would be missing out on a year of pick #3's development (this year)...but just wondering if I'm thinking about this right.

1) No
2) Possibly, but it's generally pretty accepted that you should try and sign your pick in this situation. This draft is not so weak at the top that this should even be considered.

Only consolation is that they would get an extra first round pick in 2017, but if you draft at #3, you should take a guy who will sign even if there are no slot savings (and even if you have to go a bit over slot). With the extra pick they just received from the Orioles, it shouldn't be a problem to move money around to draft and sign a top notch player.

Zac Houston of Mississippi State is a 6'7" righty who has not pitched a lot this year at Mississippi State. He got the start against Alabama last night, going 8 2/3rds innings allowing only 4 hits, striking out 5, and walking only 1 I believe. He threw about 120 pitches. On pitches 114 and 116, he was still hitting 95 on the gun. He sits between 93-95. His biggest issue is lack of experience and command, but he might be a guy to take a flier on between rounds 5-10, as he will probably sign. Mississippi State has at least 4 arms that should go in the first 10 rounds of the draft: Dakota Hudson, Austin Sexton, Zac Houston, and Daniel Brown.

Seriously. Even if unintentional, it's such a dog-whistle compliment.

Probably should have found a more artful way of saying what everyone knows he was getting at. Perhaps use Bryce Harper as the standard. If someone is well spoken you say they're "Unharperish" and if they're not you say they're "Harperish".

Bryce Harper is plenty "well spoken."
you just wouldn't see it show up in a scouting report on him.

Jim Callis wrote this again today: "The Phillies or Reds don't seem inclined to take Lewis with one of the first two selections."

I hope that is true, ,my #1 target for us this draft has been Lewis. I think his power is legit, and I also think he could fast track his way onto the team in under 2 years.

rarely in the MLB draft does "best player available" and "draft for need" come together like Lewis to the Braves would be.

Because somebody mentioned what Callis said.. I thought this had to be posted:
He said he thinks the Braves could come out of day 1 of the draft with Kyle Lewis, Joey Wentz, AND Carter Kieboom- that'd be a massive haul.
This was written in the pipeline inbox: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/180371796/pipeline-inbox-2016-mlb-draft-questions?topicid=151437456

I'd be pretty excited with those 3 selections- top power bat, top pure bat, and top 5 HS pitching prospect (and he has power for 1B too)...
I'm still interested if we can pull Rutherford to #40 though

Guess I am in the vast majority not wanting Lewis at 3.

I'm somewhat with you; I'd take Groome > Lewis.

I think people get too hung up on positional need with the draft, IMO it should have almost zero bearing.

I love Groomes upside and am a little worried about Lewis being a late bloomer and level of competition.

That being said, I want Lewis over most of the other guys in discussions for #3, but Groome is my draft crush
