Pint scares me. Watching his mechanics does. The good thing about him tho is that he's not just a flamethrower. He has a solid feel for secondary pitches. but I'd much prefer Groome.

And I prob take Moniak over both. But Lewis is #1.

Pint is probably the best athlete of the pitchers as well. He can swing the bat too. Upside is tremendous. He and Groome are very close at the top for me.

I watched some video of Moniak and man he has a sweet stroke. May never hit for a lot of power, but reminds me of a lighter Yelich ?

A couple notes that interested me;

"Crawford: If I'm the Phillies, I'm taking Jason Groome, a left-hander out of Barnegat High School in New Jersey. Despite some late season struggles and a controversial suspension, he's the best player on my board as a southpaw who has shown two plus-plus pitches in his fastball and curve, plus an above-average change."

I agree - Groome is my dude in this draft.

"Crawford: For me, there's a couple of big drops. The top three for me (Groome, Ray, and Delvin Perez) are so far and away better than everyone else that I think you have to call that a significant drop-off."

- Really interesting for me that he has Groome, Ray and Perez as a clear tier above everyone else. Maybe Ray wouldn't be such a bad pick?

"Crawford: 1. Jason Groome 2. Corey Ray 3. Delvin Perez (SS, International Baseball Academy, Puerto Rico) 4. Blake Rutherford (OF, Chaminade College Prep, California) 5. Kyle Lewis 6. Braxton Garrett (Florence HS, Alabama) 7. Mickey Moniak (La Costa Canyon HS, California) 8. Nick Senzel 9. A.J. Puk 10. Riley Pint (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Kansas)."

Perez has been mentioned as a high pick but top 3? He must see a lot in the bat?

Our farm system is rated by pretty much everyone as a top 5 system, so it would stand to reason that we must have a lot of talent that should translate to a lot of minor league wins, yet for some strange reason all 4 of our teams are poor, all with losing records. Gwinnett is 25-32, Mississippi is 25-30, Carolina is 22-32, and Rome is 22-33. Together they are 94-127, a .425 winning percentage. How can we have such a highly rated farm system, yet all our teams be so bad? Poor coaching, or perhaps our farm system isn't really that good?

If you think about it,farm ranking and winning in the minors doesn't make any sense. If you have 20 great prospects they are probably spread over several teams and all are on several different levels of development. (especially when the system is pitching heavy like the Braves) You might have 15 good arms spread over 6 or 7 teams then 5 or 6 bats spread over similar. The rest of the teams are org depth, and boom, bad results.

I don't know if there is any correlation between minor league team success and farm system results, but something tells me there will be none. The farm is about player development, not winning AA championships.

to expand on my thought about the minors above: If you took the top 20 major league players and spread them over 6 or 7 teams then filled the gaps with journeymen, replacement level players, I reckon those teams would not have much success ,record wise. It's the same idea I am presenting above.

I still believe the Braves will take Riley Pint, and I think they are working on pairing him with Joey Wentz at #40.

Per Ben Chase at Tomahawk Take:

Braves are looking at Riley Pint/Joey Wentz pairing or possible a Jason Groome/Ian Anderson pairing. His contacts say that they are talking money with both groups. Another pitcher the Braves are high on is Matt Manning.

Bowman:

Mercer University outfielder Kyle Lewis is an Atlanta native who has developed impressive power potential since turning his focus from basketball to baseball. Lewis seems like a good fit for his hometown team, but if he's taken by the Phillies or Reds, the Braves may go with the University of Tennessee's Nick Senzel or the University of Louisville's Corey Ray. High school pitchers Riley Pint, Ian Anderson and Jason Groome have drawn attention. But it seems more likely the Braves go with a college bat.

Also:

"I think you've got to take [hitters] to get them, and you can't just take one here and one there," Braves scouting director Brian Bridges said. "You have to make a commitment to go in that direction. We're thinking long and hard about it. That's something we need to address as an organization -- to not be so lopsided and get some more position players."

I feel like Ray offers more impact potential, and I can't turn that down. Senzel would be a great pick for the 7-8 range IMO.

Can't complain about any of our options really unless we pull a J E T S Jets Jets Jets and go kicker in the 2nd round.

They're talking money with at least 10-15 prospects at this point. Every team is.

LOL.. 2 pitcher over slot deal would send NinersFan into a melt down that would collapse the universe as we know it. someone needs to warn the FO!!!

as long as they feel the bats is the BPA at each particular draft spot (or close enough in talent to the arm available there to not matter) I am good with taking a bat heavy approach. I just hope they don't sacrifice talent in favor of ideology.

Not a fan of Ray, Senzel or Rutheford at #3 if lewis is gone. I prefer Moniak. Or Groome.

Coppy to the AJC:

“The biggest thing for me in a perfect world would be to draft a college bat. But in a perfect world, I’d have a full head of hair and we’d be 40-16.”

“We have a plan,” the GM said. “I can’t really divulge it, but we have a plan.”

translation.. "I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller... I wish every GM was Dave Stewart so I could call er.. I wish there was a Bat in Draft that was a sure fire Haller.."

probably the best response to that can of Corn I just layed out there..

Keith Law live on ESPN has Puk going to the Phillies, Lewis to the Reds, and Groome to the Braves. Says he loves Groome and he has one of the best curve balls from a HS kid he has ever seen.

Some reporting on the Phils. Difficult to tell what is and is not posturing, so the only real news here is that they will be working out other players over the next couple days, and it's not just Lewis getting the royal treatment.

Sources said last week the Phillies are leaning toward a hitter. If that happens, the hitter is expected to sign for less than the $9,015,000 allotted for the top pick, which would allow the Phillies to spend more money and sign more talented players in the later rounds.
"We're narrowing things down now, hopefully a few hours before the (Draft) we'll be pretty much on target with who we want," Almaraz said.
Mercer University outfielder Kyle Lewis, who is a potential No. 1 pick, worked out Monday at Citizens Bank Park. More players are scheduled to work out Tuesday and Wednesday. Other hitters in the mix for the top pick include La Costa Canyon High School (Calif.) outfielder Mickey Moniak, Louisville outfielder Corey Ray, Chaminade College Prep (Calif.) outfielder Blake Rutherford and Tennessee third baseman Nick Senzel. Many still believe the Phillies will take Florida left-hander A.J. Puk.
. . .
A player like Moniak, who could fall to the sixth or seventh overall pick, might be willing to take less money as the No. 1 pick knowing it will still be more money than if he is selected five or six picks later. Recent history has shown those talents have just as much of a chance of being successful as arguably the best overall talent.
"If you look back to 2005 and look at the first overall pick and the performers in their class, a lot of the No. 1 picks are eight, nine, 10 as far as performance is based," Almaraz said. "A lot of guys that were taken between the fifth and 20th pick have outperformed the No. 1. We're doing our job to take the best player with the best ability. But knowing that, it's helped me widen the range of prospects as far as we're concerned at No. 1."
