Stay Safe!

This is mainly aimed at all the southerners here. This winter storm is gonna fuck shit up. Stay inside unless you need to. Unless you have winter tires you don't want to fuck around in multiple inches of snow.

I'm in Boston for a show and hitting the road in the AM so I'm hoping to just edge the storm out on my end. Once I'm home I have nothing to worry about

I'm just south and east of the ice here in Mississippi. Hoping no black ice on roads in the morning after we've got 2.5" of rain the last 24 hours

Last time I was in the South during an ice storm, I showed my driver (from Ghana) the benefits of shifting to a lower gear. He was very grateful and promised to pass on my tip to his friends. Hopefully, the word has been passed along.

I have a German friend who insists that Americans in general, not just the ones in the South, don't know how to drive on snowy icy roads. I think there might be some truth to that. Possibly related to Americans favoring automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission is perfectly fine for snowy icy roads. Most cars either have a snow mode, low mode, etc. that can operate for snow or ice.

You would be surprised at the number of people who have never used a lower gear and have no idea what it does.
People are bad drivers period. The type of transmission they have won't prepare them for that. The only difference I'd give the people in manuals is they can feel the car slipping sooner.

That's sort of the point. People from countries where manual transmission is common have a better sense of how to modulate power. I say that as someone who once stalled on the autobahn!

Man... saw the video/images from up in Oxford... they got slammed
Yeah, even though it's home to such a godforsaken place called Ole Miss, I feel for those guys. Lots of fellow Mississippians will be without power for a while. Hopefully everyone makes it ok

I drove stick on farm trucks growing up, but was fully exposed driving manual when I lived in Belgium/Netherlands for a couple years. Europeans are much better drivers than Americans.
