The Advice Thread

Lady Striker and I are looking for a new gas range for the kitchen. Looking at Thermador, Viking, Blue Star, and others of that kind. Anyone got any advice on the subject?

Find something easy to clean

I'm not too brand loyal. Heavier material, easy to maintain, etc. is what you should look at. I think

I'm a huge fan of convection ovens though, steam ovens are dope too but only really great if your'e doing bread.

I don't think you'll go wrong with any of those brands. Pick the one you like the best and is easy to clean.

Our viking dishwasher is garbage, but thats not to say their ranges aren't the tits.

I tend to lean aesthetics some on appliances first because to me some can be very off putting, and ability to get parts 2nd.

Heh didn't know viking made dishwashers

I guess I shouldn't be shocked.

But all dishwashers suck, so I agree parts matter. Mine has had a pump replaced and a spray arm. I'm out like 100 bucks in repairs but it could be worse.

I'm planning a vacation for September where I'll be taking the family on a tour of national parks out west. We're hitting Zion, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yosemite, and Sequoia. I realize we could spend a week in many of these parks so we'll just be scratching the surface. Does anyone have any suggestions of can't miss experiences in these parks or the surrounding area?

I grew up 30 minutes from Zion. If you’re up for a moderate hike with some elevation, then Angel’s Landing — absolutely stunning views and one of the most famous hikes in the country. This hike requires a permit but you can still hike to Scout’s Lookout — still amazing views.

The Narrows is the most quintessential Zion experience. It’s a hike through a slot canyon and depending on precipitation over the summer, parts of the hike have waist high water. If you have young kids, this might be a lot but you can go as far as you want.

If you want an easy stroll that’s beautiful, then Emerald Pools.

If you’ve got some extra time, Bryce Canyon isn’t far from Zion (1-2 hr drive). Easy to do a day trip and it’s a completely different landscape.

I was tinkering around in my back yard after I found mice had decided to move under my porch and into my basement bulkhead. In the process of cleaning up copious amounts of bird seed from birds over the winter which drew them in (wife likes birds, hates cleaning up) in doing so I found the moss incursion has gotten so much worse. I am gonna lime up my soil (I know you're supposed to test it I don't care) but despite my research, I cannot find a specific answer.

We're going to do no mow may because as I said my wife likes birds. Is it even worth seeding? I'm mainly going to focus on my front lawn now and maybe work on the back lawn in the fall. I have a dethatcher coming in today to dethatch me front lawn. I may aerate it. But with a lot of rain coming next week.

Also, I noticed that the poster known as thethe easily has the most posts on this site by a large margin. But my question to you is how many of those 80,000 plus posts have been... non baseball related!?😭😭😭

I'll be the first to admit, I rarely care about baseball until June and with the World Cup, I'll probably not really be paying attention til July.
...what!?😔

This isn't the Zito I remember from the Bravescenter days, who posted his final hurrah in fatdome thread in the BBQ board

Just Damn😭

Also, why is it that our men's national team has (still) peaked in our lives when we were both teenagers in 2002?

Yeah I'm an old man now. Who is concerned about the quality of my front lawn. Haha.

That plus I need to reup for mlb.tv, I got a different credit card and have been lazy.

I mean the MNT has been a disspointment for the better part of a decade. But I have faith every tournament. All it takes is a magical run and your forget everything. 2002 we weren't bright going into it. We were not in position to qualify going into our last 2 matches of Qualifying but Honduras lose both their last 2 qualifying games while we won our last 2 and we got in without needing tiebreakers, etc. Then in 2002 we had the huge upset against Portugal, then drew vs. South Korea, then proceeded to shit our bed vs Poland needing South Korea to beat Portugal to guarantee our passage. Then we lucked into Mexico topping their group instead of Italy.

It's interesting that most of our best world cup runs and most fun ones have been fueled by keepers, now we have probably the worst keeper situation in USMNT recent history.

I think the team now is more talented than any other team, but I think we lack the core of what we had to make runs in the past, which was strong center backs and a dominant keeper. We got by with Michael Bradley and Ricardo Clark anchoring our midfield. Now we have Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie and Tanner Tessman and Johnny Cardosa, guys playing for Bournmouth in the Premier League, Juventus, Lyon, and Atletico Madrid. I remember reading the Yanks Abroad blog and being hyped for dudes making Championship or playing in Denmark. Now I'm debating if Brendan Aaronson who's starting in the Premier League as good enough to make the team. Back in the day if you started in the premier league you were one of our best players. But like I said, we don't look as good IMO because of defense isn't that great and our keeping is pretty weak. Chris Richards looks legit, but our CB2 is super questionable.

Man hold up I definitely get what you're saying with all of that.

I also can appreciate the irony with our current goalkeeping situation; how would you rank our Keepers over the years since we've been watching the our national team? Especially with regard to Brad friedel Casey with a k Keller and of course Tim Howard🥹

Also it does make me wonder how that match against Germany in 2002 would have turned out if we could have had a prime Tim Howard in goal although I know Brad friedel had a pretty good run

Friedel was better than Howard.

That will answer part of it haha.
Personally I go
Friedel
Howard
Keller
On ability and career including club but on what they did for the NT
Howard
Keller
Friedel

Friedel's stint with the NT was short and dominant. And his club record was the best.

Then you can debate Hahnemann, Guzan, and Meola.

I think people forget that Friedel saved 2 penalties during regulation. Joining only 2 other keepers to ever do that in the World Cup. Jan Tomaszewski, Brad Friedel and former Arsenal and @The Tariff King favorite Woj Szczęsny. It's weird he's there with 2 Polish keepers.

Honestly it's crazy to me the change. In 2010 our world cup starting outfield was

LB - Carlos Bocanegra (out of position) Rennes
CB - Demerit - no squad, wasn't retained by watford and didn't sign with anyone til november that year for Vancouver FC
CB - Onyewu - AC Milan - Big Club but he wasn't playing. He only played 1 game I think for Milan.
RB - Cherundolo - Hannover
CM - Bradley - Monchen Gladbach (they weren't that good back then)
CM - Clark - Frankfurt (not a starter)
LM - Dempsey - Fulham
RM - Donovan - LA
ST - Altidore - Villareal/Hull (didn't do great for hull with 1 league goal)
ST - Buddle - LA Galaxy

So that squad is guys on bigger teams and bigger leagues not playing much, MLSers, out of position Boca and Bradley, Dempsey, Altidore and Cherundolo

Compare that to potentially
LB - Robinson - Fulham - soon to Manchester United or Aston Villa, consided potentially one of the 3 or 4 best LBs in the premier league.
CB - Chris Richards - Crystal Palace Starter
CB - Mark McKenzie Toulouse
RB - Dest - PSV
CM - Adams - BOurnmouth
CM - Johnny - Atletico (not starting lately but had a really long run and has
CM - McKennie - Juventus
RW - Weah - Marseille
ST - Balogun - Monaco
LW - Pulisic - AC Milan

Who's not included are starters/regulars for European teams like
Brendan Aaronson(Leeds)
Ricardo Pepi (PSV tied to a fulham move)
Malik Tillman (Leverkusen)
Scally (Monchengladbach)
Tessman (lyon)
Lund (Koln)
Fossey (Standard Liege)
Campbell (WBA)
Busio (Venezia
Wright (Coventry)
Downs (Southampton/Hamburg)

And all that doesn't include maybe 2 of the most talented players in our pool who have club issues in Gio Reyna and Yunus Musah. If you told me we had a 23 year old who used to regularly play for Valencia and AC Milan but is having a rough patch, I would think he'd still be in the starting mix. But Musah probably doesn't make the squad. I personally bring him over a few guys who've been getting calls lately like Roldan because Roldan sucks for the NT.

I honestly see 2 problems with the team and they're huge, CB and GK. All our Keepers are MLS guys. Not that I have a huge issue with MLS, but we used to have guys who took their talents to England and Germany. Our only GK prospect currently actively playing in Europe who has been in camp in the last year is Jonathan Klinsmann who's playing in Serie B. I honestly debate if a pure prospect like DIego Kochen isn't better than some of the guys we've been using. Gaga Slonina has struggled to get a hold in Europe, we're desolate at the position. I think Freese has played well overall but it's clearly the weakest keeper we've had going into a World Cup in my life time. Even Turner last time was at least an elite shot stopper (he doesn't have it anymore)
