The Biden Presidency

For people on both sides who prioritize deficit reduction (and there are some) there was a sensible deal to negotiate. This aint it.

Lost in the “KM got destroyed” discourse is that Joe B continues to spend money at an unsustainable rate (consistent with his predecessor(s))

The effects of inflation has clearly made zero difference on how our government operates.

Mind boggling

The reasonable deal I have in mind would have rolled spending back to 2022 levels (not 2023 as they agreed to) plus tax increases. But if the GOP takes tax increases off the table I don't see how credibly accused creepy joe can be expected to expend political capital to get that kind of a deal done.

Also the scaling back of funding for the IRS is a pretty big clue that deficits are not the priority. It boggles my mind that there isn't a bipartisan consensus that the IRS SHOULD be going harder after tax cheats by getting the resources needed to audit higher income taxpayers at 2011 rates. It is found money.

A big chunk of the Trump tax cut sunsets after 2024. It will interesting to see how that gets handled. It is an issue that is going get some play in the 2024 elections. credibly accused creepy joe has promised not to raise taxes on families earning less that $400,000. I understand the politics. But if we want to reduce the deficit the line should be $200,000. That'll get you a much bigger chunk of change. But it should be paired with a bigger push to restrain spending. Spending on medical care is the obvious place to bend that curve. That's where the growth is happening and it prevents us from investing in other areas. The combination that gets our fiscal house in order is tax increases and bending that curve on medical care spending. It aint hard or complicated, except for the politics.

Boehner and Obama had the right idea with their Grand Bargain. But in the end the politics was too hard.

Just pointing out you can expect spending to go up under Trump or DeSantis if they win. But for some reason the complaints about the spending will stop.

Weren’t you just lecturing others in that other thread about having the capacity to read between the lines?

I am not in love with “conservatives” on the debt. They are spineless. Ironically I think it’s easier to stomach the idea of higher taxes, if that was met with reduced spending. As is, it’s a really tough message to send to people that we want more of your money to support the priorities of the party in power.

I agree with your opinion on the path to getting our “fiscal house in order”.

I was, but this is pretty cut and dried.
