The Coronavirus, not the beer

I think this is a valid point to bring up. And I think it is a good idea to encourage people (without underlying health risks) to go about their lives.

But I also think there is reason to worry (a lot). Italy reported 130 deaths yesterday. We are a much bigger country and several weeks behind in terms of progression of the virus. It is NOT farfetched that in a month or so we might be reporting a multiple of 130 deaths a day. Let's say a 2000 per week. The flu season is roughly 30 weeks and kills 1,000-2,000 per week. It is also not known if Italy has reached any sort of inflection point. Things may get worse from here.

The other thing to point out is about 10% of people infected in Italy are requiring intensive care. Their medical system is being stressed pretty severely. I won't use the word overwhelmed yet, but that is the risk.

Why are you calling it the Wuhan virus?

It's what people were calling it when the outbreak first started. Nobody knew what it was exactly except tons of people in Wuhan were getting sick. With an official name it's not used in a lot of circles anymore.

I dunno. History shows words make a big difference. There is a whole ethnic group that has been blamed for killing Jesus Christ, with deplorable consequences. We can all do our small part to help avoid stigmatizing others.

Which is sad and dumb if you really think about it. Jesus had to die in the Christian faith. So blaming a group of people for your own salvation seems counter intuitive. What it really shows is that people as a whole aren't very smart just like Agent K told us.

I wouldnt underestimate an incumbent with a strong economy when the other party is trying to "weekend at Bernies" a candidate through the nomination/election. Or should I say "weekend at Bidens"

I wasn't talking about re-election. There's a lot more that goes into that than simply approval rating.

I realize you don't like Biden, but he's a strong candidate, and polls back that up.

respectfully disagree...the damage he has done to our country is incalculable...it is not all on him, but we treat each other more poorly and that is a shame

The media and politicians are treated with less decency, but I think that's good for our common decency as they were the leading cause of the left's unbalanced misconception of a typical right winger's character.

"We didn't start the fire. It was always burning since the world's been turning"

Not that Trump has helped anything but people have been treating people like **** for awhile now.

The for profit health care system is stretched too thin to be ready for a crisis.

I dont like Hillary either but I predicted she would win easily. I know Biden will come up short. He doesnt have the energy or the aggressiveness. Trump is going to **** all over him even worse than he did Hillary. Republicans are at war politically and Democrats are about to nominate a guy who thinks he can make peace with them. His popularity is entirely based on him being Obama's VP. Thats empty name recognition popularity. Its always strongest at the start of the electoral season. Once its official and its Biden vs Trump you will see what I am talking about. Its going to get ugly. We will find out in 8 months.

Not to jump in to comment and jump out, but this forum is a prime example of this. Admittedly I don't go to a lot of message boards for comparison, but there has been some vile stuff thrown at people in here and it was happening WAY before Trump was even running.

My school has shut down completely for the next two days. All classes suspended. Supposedly have a scheme of streaming up and running.

Also, lol at “constitutional” judges. Conservatives aren’t any more “constitutional” than liberals. Voting rights act was struck down based on the “principle of separate state sovereignty,” which is not in the constitution and is something Roberts made up specifically for that case, and which hasn’t been heard from since. Obamacare case was almost struck down because “you can’t regulate non-activity” which is just a linguist argument, not a constitutional one. The CFPB is about to be struck down because conservatives think the president should have absolute power of removal, which is also not in the constitution.

You can “interpret” those things from the constitution, but that’s what y’all criticize libs for, so...

Just admit that you just like their policies better.

Aren't you in SE Asia ? Stay safe.

I thought it was a toss up. Both candidates seemed to be universally disliked outside of their main base. Even still, HRC won the popular vote and narrowly lost in FL, MI, and PA, which basically decided the election.

I assume you are aware that Asians are being stigmatized over this virus. And a small number have been physically attacked.

On a different plane, the foreign minister of China has asked Pompeo to stop using that term. It is worth noting that this crisis (including its financial and economic ramifications) is something that requires global leadership and cooperation. Trust and goodwill are in short supply these days.

Every heard of the German measles or spanish flu? No one has ever had a problem with those terms. No different than the Wuhan Virus

The Spanish Flu didn't originate in Spain, it was called Spanish flu because that's where it received the most press and was taken most seriously.

I've literally never heard "German measles," which having looked up is a name for Rubella, though maybe that's just a hole in my experience. I suppose that could be much more common for other people, but I would suggest that most people talk about getting their MMR shots rather than their MMGM shots.

Spanish Flu was, in fact, influenza that we (wrongly) thought originated from Spain. There was no more precise term at the time, though now CDC lists it as (H1N1). Spanish Flu was actually from Kansas, so I think we should call it the Kansas Flu. We should reclaim our history.

Calling it the [insert name] virus also seems... under-descriptive. "Virus" is a much broader category than "flu" for example, which is a subcategory of virus. If you are desperate to tie in the geography, I'd at least call it the Wuhan coronavirus, though that's getting wordy. Generally, though, not calling the virus by the name actual doctors are using just seems weird and begs the question of "Why?"

They cancelled classes all classes, but then it turned to be 70 degrees and sunny, the first nice day of the year, so there are thousands of students clustered in the center of campus, just enjoying the free day. Oops.
