The Official It's Better for Everyone That Dan Uggla's Done Thread

When this trade happened, I was so happy it wasn't even funny. I thought we were investing in a guy that could take our primarily contact driven team, add power and turn it into a true contender. Boy, he did not.

He did for one year. Despite a ****ty 233 avg he still jacked out 36 homers his first year here which is a career high.

Someone can be ripped and in great shape and not be a great athlete. He's also pretty close to a statue.

I don't buy it. And no he's nowhere near a statue. Just because he isn't a great defender at 2b, does not mean he's a poor athlete.

The irritational hate being spewed his way is ridiculous. I'd hate to have seen what some you would have said had the Internet been around during Murphys decline.

Yeah because Murphy is the same as Uggla. Why you white knighting for Uggla?

He's always had incredibly poor range though. Thus he's a statue.

Depends.

I think everyone knew Troy Glaus playing 3rd base for us at any point that season was the definition of a statue with his severely shot knees.

And then there's just Laird.

I wasn't speaking in terms of him being released. I was speaking in terms of sending him somewhere to get at bats with no pressure. Hoping he would get straightened out a bit.

This is an interesting issue. Given his service time, he has to accept or volunteer for an assignment to the minors. I don't know whether he has done so or not. But I would think if he really wanted to put the team first, he would be ok with this.

Are you really having this hard of a time understanding that folks are comparing him to other MLB players when they say "poor athlete"? He is obviously a better athlete than anyone on this board, and probably a better athlete than anybody that anyone on this board knows in real life. But compared to, and playing against, the other premium athletes that populate MLB rosters, I think it is completely fair to say Uggla is not a good athlete.

He's a good athlete. He just can't get around on the fastball anymore. He's an old good athlete.

What I was fumbling to say, you have said accurately. If you lined up all of the position players in baseball, Uggla would likely be in the bottom quarter in terms of raw tools. He has (had) a ton of power, but that was pretty much it in terms of physicality.

Gosselin optioned down. Uggla must be staying?

Boy was this thread premature. Good thing this wasn't a Wood start or this thread would be a mess.

Well, looks like we're stuck with Uggla all year, Braves just optioned Gosselin back to Gwinnett, so I guess Wren likes playing with a 24-man roster all year long.

Did anyone consider that this was so Gosselin could play in the Triple-A all-star game? Since he's on the 40-man again, his return is not a large problem since they don't play again until Friday.

Even if that is the case he still can't return until the 24th at the earliest because of the 10-day rule.

How is Gosselin and his potential one AB every 3 games important???

Yup. There have been some claims and assumptions made around here that exaggerate the importance of the last bench player. He potentially becomes important when there are injuries. But only potentially, since there is also the second bench in AAA that can be drawn from when someone goes on the DL.
