The Political Calculus

I don't see the point in this impeachment unless you're trying to force Republican reps to cave into public pressure, thereby losing the support of many of their constituents, or forcing them to make a stand against the impeachment and risk being seen publicly as compliant with Trump's behavior. Apparently, lawmakers aren't allowed to have the same viewpoints that this impeachment is both pointless and Trump also acted unethically and possibly criminally.

It's their call obviously, but one way of looking at this is as an opportunity to step away from the big lie. I know it ain't happening. They are too deep into the ****.

The point is it is the House's responsibility , as it was a year ago.
What the Senate does is immaterial to House constitutional (again) responsibility

Political calculus is

favor impeachment
82% (D)
47% (I)
15% (R)
-538

interesting is (D) is static but (I) and (R) have risen since last year

I will venture a guess that as more facts come out as to who is involved and to what degree these number will go up

In general this is what I think of political calculus at this stage.

Donald Trump tried to murder Congress and the VP and he’s still in office.

But again, you can both condemn the Presidents actions while believing that impeachment is a pointless endeavor at this juncture. It's also worth noting that the Dems are trying to circumvent the impeachment process and trying to rush it through. If this happened 3-4 month ago, I might support it. There would have sufficient time for hearings. But 8 days isn't enough time. And while I absolutely believe the POTUS acted irresponsibly and potentially criminally, that great thing about America is that everyone is presumed innocent. The process needs to be followed and not rushed through for political purposes. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Unfortunately, the Dems won't accept that sort of response from Republican reps. Either you're for impeachment, or you are complicit with sedition. This isn't unity and healing.

what you talk about is the Senates job
The House for all intent is a Grand Jury.
Yes, there is something here that deserves a closer look

someone asked a Rep what about witnesses.
Rep responded, "we were the witness' "

I’m not 100% on board with impeachment, but this is terrible messaging. Don’t do this or bad people will do bad things?

FCUK unity and healing.

I want us rid of MAGA militias and their sponsors
border to border and coast to coast,

My guess, is a major crackdown is coming

Trump egged on people to kill the VP and Speaker. and people are still quibbling about unity and healing
and to boot, whether he stands trial (impeachment)
Battered wife --- " but he wont do it again"
nonsense

Might want to read the historical reaction of Black Panthers late 60's early 70's
we can disarm the militias the same.
Except, you know what I will say next

That’s why their calls for unity are just bs.

They want permission to continue the behavior that got us here.

It’s like an abuser who says unless you stay quiet about the
abuse there will be more abuse.

Meanwhile, it’s obvious there will be more abuse no matter what.

and unity over DJT is just laughable

The President-elect is literally the one calling for unity and healing.

before MAGA put out a hit on the VP and Speaker

Are you in favor of negotiating with terrorists ?

The ball is in MAGA court from where I sit

Impeachment is to simply put Republicans on record for who is still willing to tow the Trump lies.

The "objectors" who said enough is enough and backed down after the chaos aftermath, should be put on record. They can't use the events of that day as an excuse to say OK NOW I DON'T OBJECT ANYMORE.

It's one thing to say it in front of the media, it's another to be put on the actual record.

There will be a small number of Republican House members, less than 10, who will vote for impeachment. What happens to their careers will be interesting. I'm guessing that most like Amash will be out of there after their current term.

From Ross Douthat column:

But breaking points do come, and the violent endgame of the Trump presidency has exposed a new divide in the conservative coalition — not a normal ideological division or an argument about strategy or tactics, but a split between reality and fantasy that may be uniquely hard for either self-interest or statesmanship to bridge.

hard to hold a party together when the big lie becomes the main litmus test

Catholics are familiar with this line from the baptismal promises: Do you reject Satan and all his works?

I think what is facing Republicans is something along the same lines.

We ain't in the land of conventional politics anymore.

So Harvard removed Elise Stefanik (one of the anti-democratic fascist House members who voted to throw out the electoral votes of Arizona and Pennsylvania) from an advisory committee. Poor Elise is upset. Outraged I tell ya.

Now I have a generally low regard for Harvard. They are at best a second-rate university. But I want to congratulate them on standing up to the anti-democratic fascists that voted to disenfranchise the voters of Arizona and Pennsylvania.

145 is a number to remember. That's how many members of Congress voted to disenfranchise the voters of either Arizona or Pennsylvania or both. 138 in the House, 7 in the Senate.

What posters ignore is the politicsl price of not impeaching.
It is way past time to stop analyzing politics from a base of conservative groups point of view.
As in " fair and balanced" which ranks up there with personal responsibility, fiscal, responsibility, thoughts and prayers and last but not leasy unity and healing.
All empty platitudes the rubes eat up

That is the base of political thought 1/5 the way through the 21st century.
