The Reverse Pennant Chase

Just four days ago we had a real shot at getting the #1 pick, and very little chance of slipping down any worse than #2. However after these last 4 wins in a row, the #1 pick is now almost out of reach, and dropping to the #3, #4 or #5 slot is a very real possibility. Drives me nuts, 2 years in a row, we suck like hell all year, and then go on a winning streak right at the end of the year in meaningless games and worsen our draft position.

We have Weber and Collmentor the next two games, our best pitcher going before Teheran on Sunday is Wisler. Have faith.

Pretty sure it was the 43-43 start last year that prevented us from the top pick not a last minute win surge. We are still unlikely to be any worse then 2nd pick. It's not the end of the world. Especially if we can knock the Mets out of the playoffs in the process.

Do you want the Cardinals to make it? I think it's at least a hard choice.

On a different note, like I said two weeks ago, we have to face the facts that we're probably the third worst team in MLB. It's pretty much impossible to lose 5 more than the Twins with this team through the rest of the year. Wouldn't be surprised if we pick 3rd again.

We had the #1 slot with 3 weeks to go last year, but got hot down the stretch and the Phillies and Reds passed us for the #1 and #2 picks.

We were 8-20 in August and had a 12-game losing streak that stretched from August 25 to September 6, putting us in position for the #1. We then managed to go 13-12 over the remainder of the season (including winning 5 out of 6 of our last games) which dropped us to #3. But you're right that we really outplayed our talent until mid-July.

I said it last year. Atlanta has the best scouting staff in baseball. Whether they pick 1st or 5th, they are going to get a great player.

I don't think anyone has denied that. But when you're in a rebuild and playing meaningless games down the stretch of a season, the best route to go is giving this scouting staff as many options as possible to choose from.

There is no such thing as a meaningless game.

We are locked into at least a top 10 pick. We still have an outside shot at passing the Phollies if we keep winning... very long shot, but we have one.

What does winning over the next two weeks do to better our future?

Depends how we are winning. If it's from offense from the likes of Kemp and Swanson it bodes well for the future. If it's from good pitching from Blair, Wisler, Folty, etc then that is good too. We really need a young pitcher or two to step up.

Personally, I'd have rather had the bonus pool that goes with the #1 pick than win a few and get a smaller bonus pool and the #3 pick.

The world will go on turning either way, but these wins don't do anything for me.

Young players playing well and improving does nothing but help us.

Next year, yes, but even if Swanson, et al, bat 1.000 with a 5.000 OPS the rest of the way the result is the same. We miss the playoffs again. I want to compete next year, but this year is lost.

Win total is irrelevant this year. Performances are not.
