The Reverse Pennant Chase

At least the Pads and Toronto are winning so that helps us secure at least 8th. 4 teams with just 1 win less than us so we still have a good chance at 4th.

The problem for the rest of the month is that most of the teams around us aren't afraid to tank. There's no reason for teams like Cincy, SD, Detroit, etc to put anything into winning games.

The Braves just don't do that for whatever frustrating reason. Just like last year where one win cost us a lot of draft money, and other teams tanked way better than we did. I'm afraid the same thing will happen this September.

If the season ended today, the Braves would be picking 9th. They are 4.5 games ahead of the coveted top 5 pick. Unless they just tank, they won't get there.

In fact, Atlanta is just as close to the 15th pick as they are the 5th spot. At the very least, if the Braves are going to pick up meaningless wins in September, I hope the kids do most of the contributions to get ready for 2018.

We have gone so youthful that it is hard to route for losses. I think we will finish around this 10 to 12 pick.

Yep, last year's Sept run made me mad, we just needed one more loss. This year I was enjoying our slump, but now I actually don't mind if we get hot since Albies, etc seem somewhat responsible for it.

Meh....with the way the cash pool system works...it doesn’t really matter as much (outside of us having a bit more cash). I used to think it mattered and it does if you are looking top three. Boston drafted Groome at what...11 a few years ago? We snagged Wright at 5 this year. Until they get a better system, there will always be high end players that fall because of bonuses, and since we have a loaded farm...we can go top heavy no problem and get that one (or two) high ceiling players. It just doesn’t matter like it does in other other sports drafts.

So what you are saying is that since the draft often produces players who come from later picks and busts who come from early picks that it doesn't matter at all where a team picks? And since the farm is currently good, a little sub-optimized position in the draft is OK?

I think that is how you end up in baseball purgatory.

Is it true that early picks often bust? Sure.

Is it true that later picks sometimes hit? Also sure.

Is it true that on average the better picks go earlier? Of course. And as scouting becomes more digital and players play in more tournaments then what is known about a player going into the draft makes the uncertainty a little less uncertain.

Teams with the worst record get more money. Is it better to have more money? Of course.

But it doesn't guarantee success. You can have more money and still throw it away.

Are you saying that it doen't matter how much money the Braves have to use in the draft since they would use it unwisely anyway?

I’m just saying that unlike in other sports, players are picked by what their bonus demands are and if that lines up with the team’s money pool plan in many instances. Do you seriously think we pick Anderson if the plan was to pick the best player available and we didn’t have to worry about how much money we had for the rest of the draft? Do you really think Wright would have been there at five? It’s just different.

Yes, of course the higher the pick the better. Yes, I hope we get the highest pick possible. Yes, I think no matter if we are #5 or #11, we can spend more money on early picks and sign more college guys late and still get some really good guys. It’s what we did this year, and since we have a crammed packed farm...it doesn’t hurt us (actually helps), to go quality or quantity for a year or two.

Since it hasn't been updated in a while...

As of games of 9/22:

1.) Giants (60-94, .390)

2.) Phillies (61-93, .396)

3.) Tigers (62-92, .403)

4.) White Sox (62-91, .405)

5.) Reds (66-88, .429)

6.) Mutts (66-87, .431)

T7.) Padres (69-85, .448)

T7.) Pirates (69-85, .448)

9.) Braves (69-83, .454)

10.) Athletics (70-83, .458)

11.) Blue Jays (72-82, .468)

12.) Marlins (72-81, .471)

13.) Orioles (74-81, .477)

T14.) Rays (75-79, .487)

T14.) Mariners (75-79, .487)

16.) Royals (75-78, .490)

It'll be typical Braves fashion during this rebuild for them to go 8-2 in these final 10 games and go from the 9th spot to like the 12th or 13th spot.

Team doesn't have the guts/will to do what's necessary and dive-bomb the season.
