The Second Base Transition: Mixing and Matching

I think that exact quote was fabricated.

***from rico***
As a mod., seeing quite a bit of that this year from certain posters. There's a thin line between satire and flat-out lying.

I know when I read the quote, it was presented as a quote from freddi. Was it just fabricated by someone on here? I thought I saw it on mlbtraderumors but guess not.

Btw, what happened to La Stella's power? In the Arizona Fall League and during spring training he hit a lot of doubles and now he has only 3 at AAA. What gives? Small sample size? I don't think it's all due to better pitching because he did hit for power at the AFL.

Yeah that Milwood guys does it all the time. Makes up quotes and makes it look like they are legit quotes. Can be really confusing, especially to those not used to his antics.

Howie Kendrick, who's batting .293/.369/.421 on the current year in a round 150 PA, and who's a career .292/.331/.429 hitter in nine seasons of 3895 PA.

Yeah, he would have done nicely.

Anyone interested in signing Drew on June 5th?

Was Howie even a viable option for us to acquire? I know he was somewhat available, but would we have had anything of value that the Angels would have wanted?

They don't have a good rotation, any chance that we could spin someone like Harang and a prospect for him?

They need pitching, probably major league ready pitching. We would have to give up a couple guys in AA and AAA. Maybe Hursh and Hale would do it. Hursh is not tradeable for a couple more months, but you can include him in a trade as a player to be named later.

You know what? I don't want to do that. And given your theory of laddering inexpensive home grown pitching, I wouldn't think you would want to, either.

Other than ongoing bullpen/bench tweaks, this team has one place it needs major improvement - it needs a guy with extraordinary on base skills. Even if LaStella is adjusting to the new level at Gwinnett and hasn't got his power stroke going, the guy still gets on base.

That may be all he does, but that's all we need.

Time to pull the trigger.

Glad to see Pastornicky in there tonight. He needs a couple games to get rid of the rust. I'm looking forward to seeing what he (and Pena) do with this opportunity.

Mix and match means among other things that Uggla should not be forgotten. Pena and Pastornicky have struggled so far. Vogelsong is the type of pitcher Uggla can do some damage against. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dan in there tonight. Then bring in Pastornicky for the series finale against Bumgarner.

Uggla has a .684 career OPS against Vogelsong and a .236 career OPS against Bumgarner.

Our 2nd base situation continues to be abysmal. Dan at .184, Pena at .195 and Pastornicky at .118. Between the 3 of them our 2nd baseman are hitting a putrid .180.

The way things are going La Stella is going to get his shot pretty soon. Imo the trio currently in the majors has until the end of May to start hitting.

Not if the Braves keep not scoring runs. If we don't start scoring we have to bring up TLS. At least put someone on this team who'll get on base. Right now our offense is Justin and Freddie with some hot streaks of Gattis. When Justin and Freddie have an off day our offense stinks. Jason needs to hit more, Bossmna needs to hit more, Johnson needs to hit more, those guys struggling is rough, then you add in that Uggla and Pastornicky are closer offensively to Floyd and Minor than they are to any of our starters, that's just the ultimate in insult to injury. Pena's been OK because of a massively overinflated iso.

I'd personally just keep Pastor in the lineup and take the freaking pitcher out of the 8-hole; I'd like to see this:
Heyward RF
Pastor 2B
Freeman 1B
JUP LF
Gattis C
BJ CF
CJoh 3B
Simba SS
Pitcher

I don't think any of our current internal second base candidates (Uggla, Pena, Pastornicky, La Stella, Gosselin, Elmer Reyes) has star potential. We are just trying to find one who will be adequate for the year. It would be great if one of them caught on fire and played over his head for a while.

Peraza does have star potential but he is a couple years away from being ready. We should be thinking about accelerating his development with a mid-year promotion to AA.

Pastornicky isn't a good hitter. Sure he's not as bad as he's been so far this year, his .167 BABIP is entirely too low. but on that same note if he keeps smacking balls into the dirt, his iso is also too high. I don't know anyone who hits under 15% flyballs who has any kind of power. Not to mention unlike Pena, Pastornicky is not a great defender. So his light hitting is not as easy to overlook. Pastornicky is better than Uggla though, of course I think you could put a trampoline out there and it may be better than Uggla.

But Pastornicky and Pena have a careers worth of sucking. Sure they could piece it together and blah blah blah, but it's time to give someone else a shot. Let TLS get a shot, then give Gosselin a shot. If they suck then we're back to the craptacular hydra. If one of them produces then we're saved from the craptacular hydra.

I don't understand why anyone thinks Pastor is going to amount to anything… He's not very good

There are flickers here and there. I've felt since ST opened that Uggla had until Memorial Day. He didn't get that. Then I thought Pena and Pastornicky had until Memorial Day for either one assert himself and take the job. I'm not sure they're going to get two more weeks, either. Tommy's turn.

These guys just aren't hitting. Can't anybody with a tomahawk on his chest hit a ****ing baseball?

There's a lot to be said for a one skill player if that skill happens to be getting on base close to 40% of the time. I don't care if Tommy never hits a double if he can do that.
