The Trump Presidency

@AP: BREAKING: Trump administration considers mobilizing as many as 100,000 National Guard troops to round up unauthorized immigrants.

@SteveKopack: Regarding draft memo reported on by the AP, a senior administration official tells @NBCNews' @PeterAlexander: "This is false."

Wow. Not sure how to feel about this but if you break the laws you should expect consequences.

@AP: 4 states that border Mexico are included in the Trump admin. proposal _ California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Denials of this are coming pretty hot and heavy.

Possibility 1: totally false (doubt that AP would bite if that were the case)

2) Distraction

3) Drafted and considered, but rejected

4) Stalking horse for something less draconian

AP points out that WH and DHS were asked multiple times for comment. This really points to some bad faith.

The credibility (or lack thereof) of the WH communications shop casts the denials in a strange light.

They should at least give illegals a one month window to leave the country before unleashing a bunch of weekend warriors who are not trained for such things.

If they couldn't get a comment from the White House (or had any doubt whatsoever about their source - which I guess they didn't) then they shouldn't have run it.

This is the White House trying to railroad yesterday's narrative. It wouldn't surprise me if they leaked the document themselves.

I suspect they did.

As to your first point, the logical progression of that scenario is pretty absurd.

Yes but would the White House team do this on the Friday news cycle? This would have been a better play mid or early week.

Nvm. I forgot he's holding a big rally in Florida this weekend. It would make for an interesting rally cry

If Trump whines about it from the podium, I guess we'll know.

This administraion seems to go counter to PR conventional wisdom . The Muslim Ban, the border roundup and something else were all late Friday or Saturday AM events.

well, a majority didn't want this president so, sure

i don't see a problem with it

cause some people that post here, well, post here, i understand he is president and won the contest the way the system is setup to determine it. that doesn't change the fact that a majority of voters didn't want him and it's silly to act like he has a mandate by voters to act like all of this is wanted

Serves those people right. They would be more than happy to have their authoritarian candidate ****ting all over freedom and liberty. A vote for Hillary might as well have been a vote for Trump.

There's just no way, on a piece of this magnitude, that you allow yourselves to miss the signs so badly and expose your bureau (and every paper/website/new station that picks up your wire story - so far, a **** ton).

If the conversation is about the trustworthiness and motivation of the media, advantage Trump. A lot of members of the media are all too prone to playing into this dynamic.

If AP believed in the sourcing for the story, they aren't at fault or running it without comment as long as they solicited comment. All the WH had to do was say "it was an early draft that was never seriously considered" . . . which is what DHS now say. That they didn't is either irresponsible or cynical.

I think this is a good idea. I rdont want to see images of people being forcefully removed abruptly but these people have broken our laws.
