Depends how you define successful. He got elected to Senate at only 29 years old and was a Senator for 36 years, VP for 8 years, and President for 4 possibly 8 years. In that sense he is as successful as just about anyone. His record as a Senator though is terrible. He defended segregation. He championed the war on drugs and civil asset forfeiture. He was to the right of even most Republicans and worked with some of the most racist politicians like Strom Thurmond on crime bills. He will be remembered for sending other peoples kids to prison for smoking a joint while his son was smoking crack and not spending one day behind bars.
