Tim Hudson signs with Giants

I don't see a disconnect at all. The Braves only valued Hudson at like 1 year and $8M, which is why he didn't resign. The Braves obviously think Lohse is a much better buy than Hudson.

Well we don't know that this is the Braves think. I meant there is a disconnect in the speculation. But maybe it is informed speculation that has an idea of what the front office is thinking. Some of it is coming from beat writers who I assume have talked to some people in the front office about the team's plans.
 
I think they value Lohse more than Huddy for two reasons. First Kyle is 39 months younger than Tim and is not coming off major surgery. Second, Lohse (ERA 3.19, averaged 199.1 innings/year) has pitched better than Huddy (ERA 3.55, averaged 175 innings/year) over the past three years. Lohse would be a very solid addition to our very talented but young rotation.

Lohse has the better ERA and IP numbers. Hudson has had the lower FIP the past three years. Choose your weapons. For what it's worth, Steamer projects Huddy with the lower ERA and FIP in 2014.

Don't get me wrong, I think very highly of Huddy and would have loved to see us keep him. Apparently we ended up upping our offer to two years, but obviously not close enough to the Giants offer. Point is we did try to keep him. Now on to plan B. I think if Wren can get someone like Lohse without having to give up too much, he will do it given the youth of our rotation. I probably would have preferred Huddy and would have considered him option 1, but for the right price in prospects I would consider Lohse 1b.
 
I would offer Bethancourt to the Cubs for Samardzija. That would be my preferred trade.

For Lohse I would offer one of Kubitza/Salcedo and one of Martin/Northcraft/Schlosser.

I don't think it is a great deal. They are paying the going market rate of about $6M/expected WAR for starting pitching. They overpaid for Lincecum.
 
I just don't see how it can be looked at as a given that he bounces back from his injury at his age witht eh same level of effectiveness. Pitchers need their legs to pitch as well.

I'm sure the Giants did their due diligence on the injury. A broken ankle usually heals without consequence for future performance. It appears that as bad as the injury looked it was not a Joe Theismann type injury which I believe left the injured leg shorter than his other leg.
 
Brian Sabean is Brian Sabean. These are the types of moves he makes, mainly tending towards geriatrics. They are about to sign Javier Lopez to a 3 year deal. Yes, 3 years for a 36 year old LOOGY. On top of this wonky Hudson deal, and the bizarre Lincecum contract ... they are also interested in Bronson Arroyo (aged 36).

Defies logic, but Sabean probably doesn't care since he's got 2 rings in 4 years. :Alone:
 
Its a slight overpay for Hudson given his age.

Not an extreme one though.
 
Great deal for Tim and he has to take it. good for him

glad we didn't sign him to that absurd deal

i am in the very small camp of thinking we don't need a pitcher but whatever
