Time to extend Gattis

Yes, what a shock that I would be calling for this but my main reason for this is because I believe the DH is coming to the NL. I wouldn't extend Gattis if I didn't think it was coming over but I think Gattis could be a very productive player into his last 30's if the DH was here and we should be proactive in keeping him. I also think he is popular with the fans which also helps future revenues.

What do you guys think?

I wouldn't. Too risky if you're banking on the NL adding the DH. Chances are another catcher will come along.

Gattis would be perfect for DH. His ability to hit off the bench proves his performance would not suffer by not playing the field (probably get better, actually). I am in agreement. And if the DH doesn't make it here, just trade him to the AL when the time comes.

I think if the DH comes to the NL, I will become a NASCAR zealot.

Sports is about a money grab and there is no bigger money grab in the NL then adding a DH. Players make more money and the fans like offense more. It could also be a great leveraging tool by baseball to convince the players association to get REAL testing.

Also, the NL is basically the only professional league left that doesn't have a DH. It makes no sense anymore to have that.

An AL team would probably give up a buttload to get Gattis 600+ AB's for them.

You probably think we should have still kept Mac around.

Do you think Gattis is going to fall off of a cliff? Why would you hesitate?

I had a price to extend Mac, Yankees blew that out of the water.

I think Gattis will fall off the cliff. He's 27 going to be 28 soon. He already has knee issues. He's under team control until he's 32. Why extend him? You want him in his mid 30s?

He's locked up until 2018, when he will be 32 years old. I'm not sure I'm getting the point....on the off chance the NL does adopt the Dh in the next 5 years?

It made no sense to bring Mac back at any cost.

Why extend him? For one, he is probably a top 5 power hitter in baseball. Secondly, the DH is coming and even if it doesn't you just do what Dalyn suggested and trade him to an AL team in a few years.

Sure, his knees are a worry if he is a CATCHER. He will not fall off of a cliff as a DH in his mid 30's.

Don't you think an AL team would love to get Gattis?

What would an AL pay for a 32 or 33 year old DH? Who knows what happens in 2019, but most AL teams already have guys that have power at DH.

There are only a handful of players in baseball who have the power that Gattis has so no most AL teams do not have a guy like Gattis at DH.

Look at the early swing percentages so far this year. Gattis is not chasing as much. Don't you think thats a good sign of improvement? If he learns how to command the strikezone a little better he will be a force. talking about 900+ OPS type of guy with 35-40 homeruns.

DH isn't gonna come to the NL unless MLB needs to have a big favor that they need to make a concession to the MLBPA.

And if we have to trade him that drives down his value.

AL teams would line up to get Gattis on there team. Braves would clean up in a trade if they wanted to go that route. Hopefully they do not and the DH will be here.

Teams don't even hit there pitchers in ST and in the minor leagues. It makes no sense that the NL is the only league to hit their pitchers. Baseball having two seperate rules is asinine. When a new commissioner comes in there will be changes to modernize the game. Baseball is not really making enough young fans. Changes are coming to the sport.

I love Gattis as much as anyone, but I don't see the point in extending him. He seems to me more like lightning in a bottle. You take it for the 3-4 years and be glad you had it.

I'm not seeing a .900 OPS guy unless he can slug well over .600.
