Time to extend Gattis

This is why I agree. I wouldn't necessarily add years, but I would love to lock him in before he has the monster year I can see coming in '15 or '16.

Yeah, I never said to lock him up till his late 30's. I would want to buy out his arby years and maybe another year or two. Gattis is going to break out. I love where his swing percentages are trending. Eventually he is going to start drawing a lot of walks and get his OBP north of 350.

I think it makes sense becaues I don't believe we have seen the best of Gattis and that he can always be traded if catching isn't allowing him to get on the field consistently. If you do believe that Gattis will be a 900+ OPS guy then I'd rather settle his arby years before he truly breaks out.

He doesn't walk enough. He's a flyball hitter who doesn't walk and Ks about 22% of the time, none of that screams .900 OPS. Sure he could improve on skills and get there but what we're looking at is probably someone who regularly gets on base around or below .300 meaning he would need nearly .400 iso to match up with that. Considering since 2010 no player has maintianed long term an iso over .300, that's nearly impossible for him to be over .900 consistently. This year Gattis has a supremely lucky BABIP given his 12.5 LD%, and an iso that is better than what guys like Miguel Cabrera or Jose Bautista regularly do, I don't think he has the ability to be a .900 guy consistently. As far as moving him off C, he can't play any other position. He's **** at 1B and **** in LF.

Why is he all of a sudden gonna start drawing a lot of walks and have an OBP over .350?

Gattis is a raw product. We agree on that right?

Looks at where his Swing % numbers are the last two years:
O-Swing:
2013 - 42.1%
2014 - 35.6%

Z-Swing:
2013 - 71.6%
2014 - 68.7%

To me this is showing that Gattis is understanding that waiting for his pitch is the way to go as opposed to swinging at everything. Pitchers are throwing him more strikes this year as well and he is still destroying the ball. I think as he continues to produce pitchers are going to be more careful with him which will lead to more walks. I'm sure you've been watching plenty this year. Don't you think that Gattis has looked better at the plate? Forget the homeruns but just the quality of AB's he is having. Its a big improvement from last year. I believe Gattis is still learning and he will continue to improve.

You are using his BB/K numbers for a guy that didn't get enough minor league experience and is learning at the major leagues. Gattis is trending in a positive direction and soon pitchers are going to stop throwing him strikes. The walk numbers will spike.

Buying out arb years and one free agent year sounds good. Wouldnt go beyond that though. He already can't catch full time and I don't buy into the DH coming anytime soon.

You think. There's no evidence to back that up.

I do agree that I expect his walk numbers to go up considerably. In order for that to happen he needs to not throw away ABs and get himself out. It's much easier said than done, and I do think he's improved on it this year. His BB% was only 2.6 in March/April but has been 6.5% in June and was 9.3% in May. So as the season has gone on, he's been walking at a much higher clip than the initial month, which is nice progress.

All you have to do is watch and you can see it. Gattis is much more in control and refrains from swinging at pitches 6-12 inches off the plate like he did last year. He is in for a huge production spike.

It depends on when you watch. He's gets as hot as you can get and as cold as you can get

I dont' disagree but as a total picture he has looked much better than last year and he had a productive season last year. I fully believe he will continue to improve. I know you are aware of what consequences are of those two types of swing percentages. It looks good right now for Gattis IMO.

I agree, I think he's laying off pitches better this year for sure.

The numbers back it up as well. In addition, pitchers are throwing him more strikes this year. Once they stop throwing him strikes and he (hopefully) continues to improve on not swinging at garbage he is going to start walking 60+ times a year.

This I agree with. Wait until his next prolonged slump which is probably right around the corner. It's not good to get too high on guys when they're in the middle of a hot streak.
