When Don wrote, "...perhaps they never will", we know who "they" refers to.

Fantastic. Here's McLean's story of how he came to write the song:

“In the autumn of 1970 I had a job singing in the school system, playing my guitar in classrooms. I was sitting on the veranda one morning, reading a biography of van Gogh, and suddenly I knew I had to write a song arguing that he wasn’t crazy. He had an illness and so did his brother Theo. This makes it different, in my mind, [from] the garden variety of ‘crazy’ – because he was rejected by a woman. So I sat down with a print of Starry Night and wrote the lyrics out on a paper bag.”

Not to nitpick, but this guys presenting something as fact not as a conspiracy

They are not the same

And he doesn't even believe it. One more part of the effort to convince everyone that each successive R is worse than the one before. I bet they'll tell us the next one kills babies....wait...strike that...kills puppies.

On the plus side, they've gone from pretending that W was a monster to posting pictures of him cuddling with Michelle. Their rehabilitation of Trump to make him compare favorably to the next guy should be a hoot to see.

"Most artists"? 'Artists' are no more ignorant, pompous, etc. than any other people. Projecting a little, are we?

Artists are often envied by those who feel they have no talent themselves.

Everyone has a creative side. Where would the world be without creators?

I agree with you that they are no more ignorant than anyone else, but pompous? I don't think it's a word that can be used to describe many mechanics, store clerks, DOT workers, roofers, welders, etc. And of course those people are all providing a tangible benefit.

you shouldn't generalize so much...this guy was crazier than B.S....but a tad more talented...and yes mankind has been greatly enriched by his work

How has that painting done anything for mankind? I can see something far lovelier by looking up at the sky at any moment, and it's never the same.

That's not happening. But there will be a cottage industry akin to the Lost Cause historians that will find a ready market the next 10-20 years.

Beauty is a subjective thing. I would say that painting is more than beautiful. It has charisma. And makes us think.

Yes, life would be so much better without art, music, poetry, or any other man-made beauty. Good lord man, you may be a sadder curmudgeon than FB.

You can't have intelligent life without art and creativity.

we all have our hierarchy of what it is that constitutes the apex of humanity

i would put art very near the top

Oh, I assure you there are pompous, arrogant asshats in the blue-collar world and most any segment of society. It may manifest more subtlety but competition for status within a group is just part of being human.

How many jobs do you think J.K. Rowling has created? How about Beyonce or Sir Paul McCartney? I wonder how many non-musicians the music industry employs. Probably only a small percentage of employees in the industry are actual performers.
