1859: Amherst defeats Williams 73-32 in the first college baseball game ever played.

1910: The White Sox lose to the Browns 2-0 in the first game played at Comiskey Park.

1920: The Cardinals lose to the Pirates 6-2 in their first game at Sportsman's Park.

1941: Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 44 games, tying the M.L. record.

1945: After being away from baseball for four years being in the service, Hank Greenberg homers to help the Tigers beat the A's 9-5.

1951: Bob Feller pitches his third no-hitter in the Indians 2-1 win over the Tigers. He joins Cy Young and Larry Corcoran as the only pitchers to do so in M.L. history.

1962: In the second of a doubleheader against the Indians, the White Sox become the first team in M.L. history to record three sacrifice flies in one inning. Juan Pizarro, Nellie Fox, and Al Smith account for the run scoring flies.

1982: Orioles manager Earl Weaver moves Cal Ripken, Jr. from third base to shortstop.

1997: Randy Myers records his 300th save in the Orioles 4-1 win over the Phillies.

2003: The Mets trade Roberto Alomar and cash to the White Sox for Andrew Salvo, Edwin Almonte, and Royce Ring. Later that day, the White Sox also acquire Carl Everett from the Rangers.

2010: The Giants trade Bengie Molina and cash to the Rangers for Chris Ray and a minor leaguer.

2010: The Diamondbacks fire manager A.J. Hinch and name bench coach Kirk Gibson as interim manager.

July 2nd:

1941: Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 45 games, breaking the M.L. record.

1962: In a 5-1 win over the Phillies, the Dodgers Johnny Podres ties the N.L. record with eight straight strikeouts.

1963: The Giants Juan Marichal and the Braves Warren Spahn both pitch 15 scoreless innings. In the bottom of the 16th, Willie Mays homers off Spahn to give the Giants a 1-0 win.

1969: In the second inning of the Reds 9-4 win over the Braves, Jerry Arrigo ties a M.L. record for an inning with three hit batsmen. The Braves also tied a single game M.L. record with five hit batters.

1979: The White Sox fire manager Don Kessinger and replace him with the club's AAA manager, Tony LaRussa.

1985: The Astros Joe Niekro wins his 200th game. Along with Phil, they join Jim and Gaylord Perry as the only brothers to win 200 games each in the majors.

1993: Royals Stadium in Kansas City changes it name to honor team owner Ewing Kauffman, who would pass away within a month.

1995: The Dodgers Hideo Nomo becomes the first Japanese-born player named to the All-Star team.

2002: A new M.L. record is set when 62 home runs are hit across all the games.

2004: The Diamondbacks fire manager Bob Brenly and replace him with third base coach Al Pedrique.

2013: The Reds Homer Bailey pitches his second no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Giants.
 
July 3rd:

1912: The Giants Rube Marquard wins his 19th straight game to start the season, marking the most win any pitcher had in M.L. history to start a season without a loss.

1925: In a 6-3 win over the Giants, the Dodgers Milt Stock sets a N.L. record with his fourth straight four-hit game.

1947: The Indians purchase the contract of Larry Doby from the Newark Eagles. He becomes the first black player in A.L. history two days later.

1966: In a 17-3 win over the Giants. the Braves Tony Cloninger becomes the first player in N.L. history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

1970: The Angels Clyde Wright pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1993: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale dies at age 56.

2001: In a 6-5 win over the Rockies, the Padres tie a N.L. record with four sacrifice flies.

2006: In the Giants 5-3 win over the Phillies, Barry Bonds (41), Steve Finley (41), and Moises Alou (40) become the first trio of 40-year olds to start in the same outfield.

2010: Jim Thome hits his 573rd and 574th home runs of his career, passing Harmon Killebrew for tenth on the all-time list.
 
July 4th:

1905: Rube Waddell and the A's defeat Cy Young and the Red Sox in 20 innings 4-2, with both pitchers going the distance.

1912: The Tigers George Mullins pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Browns.

1938: In their first two games at Shibe Park, the Phillies split a doubleheader against the Boston Bees, losing the first game 10-5 and winning the nightcap 10-2.

1939: The Yankees honor Lou Gehrig and retire his #4 at Yankee Stadium. Gehrig gives one of the most famous speeches in all of sports, highlighted by his line "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth".

1967: Facing off against his younger brother Joe, the Braves Phil Niekro pitches a complete game in an 8-3 win over the Cubs. The Niekros join Jesse and Virgin Barnes (from the 1920s) as the only brothers to start the same M.L. game.

1980: Nolan Ryan records his 3,000th strikeout.

1983: The Yankees Dave Righetti pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Red Sox.

1984: The Yankees Phil Niekro records his 3,000th strikeout.

1985: In one of the craziest games in M.L. history, the Mets defeat the Braves 16-13 in 19 innings, ending around 4 AM the following morning. The game took more than six hours to play. In the 18th inning, Braves pitcher Rick Camp, who had a career average well below .100, hit a two run homer with two outs and two strikes to tie the game. After the Mets scored five in the 19th, the Braves scored twice and Camp batted again with a chance to tie the game. Ron Darling struck him out to end the game. After the game finally ended, the fans who stayed were treated to the scheduled July 4th fireworks display. The fireworks had some nearby residents calling police in a panic because they were thinking the city was under attack.

1999: The Devil Rays Jose Canseco becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs for four different teams. He also did it with the A's (1986), Rangers (1994), and Blue Jays (1998).

2004: With the selection of N.L. outfielders Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Sammy Sosa to the All-Star team, it will mark the first time in M.L. history that three players with 500 home runs would appear on the same team.

2006: The Mets Billy Wagner records his 300th save.
 
July 6th:

1929: The Cardinals set the modern N.L. record for runs scored in a 28-6 win over the Phillies.

1933: At Chicago's Comiskey Park, the A.L. defeats the N.L. 4-2 in the first All-Star Game. Babe Ruth's two run home run helps in the win.

1936: 17-year old Bob Feller makes his first appearance in a M.L. uniform during an All-Star break exhibition against the Cardinals Gas House Gang. He struck out eight straight batters over three innings.

1938: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-1.

1942: The A.L. defeats the N.L. 3-1 in the All-Star Game at the Polo Grounds.

1966: The Orioles Boog Powell ties the A.L. record with 11 RBIs in a doubleheader.

1983: In the 50th anniversary of the All-Star Game, Fred Lynn hits the first grand slam to help the A.L. win 13-3 in Comiskey Park.

1986: The Braves Bob Horner hits four homers in an 11-8 loss to the Expos.

1989: The Phillies Mike Schmidt becomes the first retired player to be elected to the All-Star. Schmidt retired on May 29th and hitting only .203.

1992: Using his "best interest in baseball" power, Commissioner Fay Vincent declares the N.L. will realign for the next season, making the teams be more geographically aligned. The new alignment would move the Braves and Reds to the Eastern Division with the Cubs and Cardinals moving to the Western. The move was approved in March by 12 of the 14 N.L. teams, but was blocked by the Tribune Company, the owner of the Cubs.

2013: At age 20, the Nationals Bryce Harper is elected to the All-Star Game, making him the youngest starter for the N.L. in history.
 
July 7th:

1900: Kid Nichols of the Boston Beaneaters records his 300th win in an 11-4 victory over the Cubs.

1906: Hall of Famer Satchel Paige is born in Mobile, Alabama.

1909: In a 15-3 win over the Browns, the White Sox record 12 stolen bases, including home three times.

1923: The Indians become the first team in A.L. history to score in every inning during a 27-3 rout of the Red Sox.

1936: At Braves Field, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the first time, defeating the A.L. 4-3.

1937: At Griffith Stadium in Washington, President Franklin D. Roosevelt throws out the first pitch before the A.L.'s 8-3 win in the All-Star Game.

1948: On his 48th birthday, Negro League star Satchel Paige signs a contract with the Indians.

1953: In a 9-5 win over the Pirates, the Dodgers hit a home run in their 24th straight game, setting the M.L. record.

1959: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 5-4.

1964: In the only All-Star Game played at Shea Stadium, the N.L. wins 7-4, evening the series against the A.L. at 18 wins apiece.

1970: The Braves Rico Carty becomes the first player voted into the All-Star Game as a write-in.

1998: At Coors Field in Denver, the A.L. defeats the N.L. 13-8 in the highest scoring All-Star Game ever.

2006: In a 9-0 win over the Orioles, the Indians Travis Hafner becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit five grand slams before the All-Star break.

2007: The Mariners Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first player in All-Star history to hit an inside-the-park home run.

2008: The Indians trade C.C. Sabathia to the Brewers for Matt LaPorta and three minor leaguers.

1912: The 19-game winning streak of the Giants Rube Marquard ends in a 7-2 loss to the Cubs.

1935: The A.L. defeats the N.L. 4-1 in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium. The A.L. won the first three All-Star games.

1941: Ted Williams' two out, two-run home run lifts the A.L. to a 7-5 win in the All-Star Game at Detroit.

1947: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 2-1 at Wrigley Field.

1952: In Philadelphia, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-2 in a shortened game to five innings due to rain. It was the first ASG to be called early due to weather.

1958: In Baltimore, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-3. All 13 hits in the game were singles.

1976: In a 6-3 win over the Cubs, the Padres Randy Jones sets a N.L. record with 16 wins before the All-Star break.

2005: The International Olympic Committee drops baseball and softball from the scheduled events for the 2012 games in London. It marks the first time since 1936 that any sport was dropped from the Olympics when polo was cut.

1903: In a Tri-State League game, Philadelphia's Dan McClellan pitches a perfect game against York, PA.

1940: At Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-0 in the first shutout in the game's history.

1946: At Fenway Park, the A.L. defeats the N.L. 12-0 in the most lopsided game in All-Star Game history.

1953: The consecutive complete game streak for the Phillies Robin Roberts ends at 28. He had completed every start since August 28th the prior season.

1956: The BBWAA establishes the Cy Young Award, given to the most outstanding pitcher.

1963: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 5-3 at Cleveland Stadium.

1968: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 1-0 in the Houston Astrodome, the first to be played indoors.

1971: The A's defeat the Angels 1-0 in 20 innings, the longest shutout in A.L. history.

1976: The Astros Larry Dierker pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

1988: With his 100th win with the Astros, Nolan Ryan joins Cy Young as the only pitchers to win 100 games for a team in both leagues.

1991: The A.L. defeat the N.L. 4-2, their fourth straight All-Star Game win. Tony LaRussa becomes the first manager to win three straight All-Star Games.

1996: At Veterans Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-0.

1998: After serving as acting commissioner for almost six years, the owners name Bud Selig as the ninth commissioner of baseball. To avoid a conflict of interest, his ownership of the Brewers is placed in a trust.

2002: The All-Star Game at Milwaukee's Miller Park ends in a 7-7 tie after 11 innings of play.

2011: In the third inning of the Yankees 5-4 win over the Rays, Derek Jeter homers off David Price for his 3,000th hit.

1934: At the All-Star Game in the Polo Grounds, the Giants Carl Hubbell records consecutive strikeouts of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin.

1935: Ed Cole of the Galveston Buccaneers pitches the first perfect game in Texas League history in a 1-0 win over the Tulsa Oilers.

1936: In the Phillies 9-6 win over the Pirates, Chuck Klein becomes the first N.L. player this century to hit four home runs in one game.

1947: The Indians Don Black pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the A's.

1953: In a 6-1 win over the Giants, the Dodgers homer in their 24th straight game, setting a new N.L. record.

1954: Hall of Famer Andre Dawson is born in Miami, Florida.

1962: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1 in Washington.

1968: Both leagues agree on a new playoff format and expansion for the next season. The leagues will divide into two six-team divisions and a best-of-five series will determine the pennant winners.

1984: The Mets 19-year old pitcher Dwight Gooden becomes the youngest player in All-Star Game history. The Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela along with Gooden combine to strike out six straight batters. The N.L. wins at Candlestick Park 3-1.

2001: In his final All-Star Game, Cal Ripken, Jr. homers and is named MVP in the A.L.'s 4-1 win at Seattle's Safeco Field.

2009: The Giants Jonathan Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Padres.

2013: The Red Sox David Ortiz records his 1,689th hit as a Designated Hitter, breaking Harold Baines' record.
 
July 11th:

1914: In his M.L. debut, pitcher Babe Ruth leads the Red Sox to a 4-3 win over the Indians.

1939: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1 at Yankee Stadium. All three runs were driven in by Yankees players in their home ballpark.

1944: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-4 at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field.

1950: Red Schoendienst's 14th inning home run gives the N.L. a 4-3 All-Star Game win at Comiskey Park.

1961: An All-Star Game record seven errors is committed on a windy day at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. The N.L. won the game 5-4.

1967: In the longest All-Star Game ever, Tony Perez's home run in the 15th inning off Catfish Hunter gives the N.L. a 2-1 win at Anaheim Stadium.

1976: In a promotion billed as "Headlocks and Wedlocks", 34 couples are wed before the Mets/Braves game at Atlanta Stadium. After the game, championship wrestling followed. As for the game, the Braves were able to pin the Mets down for a 9-8 victory.

1978: The Padres Steve Garvey becomes the first two-time All-Star Game MVP for the N.L., helping them beat the A.L. 7-3 at San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium.

1980: Knuckle-ball pitcher Charlie Hough is sold to the Rangers by the Dodgers.

1985: The Astros Nolan Ryan records his 4,000 strikeout.

1989: Bo Jackson leads off the All-Star Game in Anaheim with a home run, and became the first in ASG history to homer and steal a base. Jackson was named MVP in the A.L.'s 5-3 win.

1994: In an 8-1 loss to the Rockies, the Cardinals Ozzie Smith passes Luis Aparaicio for most assists by a shortstop.

1995: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-2 in The Ballpark at Arlington.

1998: The Padres Trevor Hoffman earns the save in a 4-1 win over the Dodgers, who were managed by his brother Glenn. It marked the first time in M.L. history a player had opposed a team managed by his brother.

1999: The World team defeats the USA 7-0 in the first MLB Futures Game.

2000: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-3 at Atlanta's Turner Field.

2002: The Marlins trade Ryan Dempster to the Reds for Juan Encarnacion. They also trade Cliff Floyd, Wilton Guerrero, and minor leaguer Claudio Vargas to the Expos for Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd, Mike Mordecai, and minor leaguer Justin Wayne.

2002: The Indians fire manager Charlie Manuel and named third base coach Joel Skinner the interim manager.

2006: Michael Young hits a two-run triple off Trevor Hoffman to give the A.L. a 3-2 win in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh's PNC Park.

2010: Bob Sheppard, longtime Yankee Stadium P.A. announcer, dies at age 99. During his 56 years, he worked over 4,500 games. Reggie Jackson had nicknamed him "The Voice of God".
 
July 12th:

1901: Cy Young wins his 300th game.

1911: In the first inning of the Tigers 9-0 win over the A's, Ty Cobb completes the stolen base cycle in one inning for the second time in his career.

1931: The Cubs and Cardinals, in the first of a doubleheader, combined to set a one game M.L. record with nine doubles, then hit 23 in the nightcap for a total of 32 doubles.

1943: An Armed Forces All-Star team managed by Babe Ruth and featured players Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams defeat the Boston Braves 9-8. The game was for a fund raiser.

1949: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 11-7 at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field.

1951: The Yankees Allie Reynolds pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Indians.

1955: Stan Musial hits a walk-off home run in the 12th inning to give the N.L. a 6-5 win in the All-Star Game at Milwaukee's County Stadium.

1966: At St. Louis' Busch Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 2-1.

1979: The White Sox put on the promotion "Disco Demolition Night" after the first of a scheduled doubleheader against the Tigers. Fans with a disco record were admitted to the game for 98 cents. After the game, the records were blown up on the field. Afterward, more than 5,000 fans stormed the field and wouldn't leave. After an over hour delay, the field was found to be in too bad of shape to play on and the game was forfeited to the Tigers.

1990: In a game shortened to six innings due to rain, the White Sox Melido Perez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Yankees.

1994: In the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, the Braves Fred McGriff ties the game in the ninth with a two-run home run off Lee Smith. Then in the tenth, Moises Alou drives in Tony Gwynn to give the N.L. an 8-7 win, breaking their six year losing streak to the A.L. McGriff was named game MVP.

1997: In his first game at Fenway since leaving the Red Sox, Roger Clemens strikes out 16 batters in the Blue Jays 3-1 victory.

2000: The Reds trade Denny Neagle and Mike Frank to the Yankees for minor leaguers Drew Henson, Jackson Melian, Brian Reith, and Ed Yarnell.

2000: The Phillies trade pitcher Andy Ashby to the Braves for Bruce Chen and Jimmy Osting.

2006: The Astros acquire outfielder Aubrey Huff from the Devil Rays in exchange for minor league prospects Ben Zobrist and Mitch Talbot as well as cash.
 
July 13th:

1896: In a 9-8 loss to the Colts, the Phillies Ed Delahanty hits four home runs.

1934: Babe Ruth hits his 700th career home run.

1943: The A.L. defeats the N.L. 5-3 in the first All-Star Game played at night.

1948: At Sportsman's Park in St. Louis, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 5-2.

1954: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 11-9 at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium.

1963: At 43 years old, Early Wynn wins his 300th game in the Indians 7-4 victory over the A's. It was his final M.L. win.

1965: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-5 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota. It marked the first time the N.L. took the lead in games won over the A.L. in All-Star history.

1966: Robin Roberts signs a free agent deal with the Cubs.

1971: At Detroit's Tiger Stadium, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-4. The game featured six home runs, including Reggie Jackson's shot off a power generator on the right field roof, measuring 520 feet.

1976: At Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-1.

1982: At Montreal's Olympic Stadium, the N.L. beats the A.L. 4-1 for their 11th straight win in the All-Star Game. It was the first one played outside the United States.

1991: Four Orioles pitchers combine to throw a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's. The Baltimore pitchers were Bob Milacki, Mike Flanigan, Mark Williamson, and Gregg Olson.

1993: At Baltimore's Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 9-3. The game is most known for John Kruk's at bat against Randy Johnson. After a pitch sailed over his head from Johnson, Kruk in a comedic fashion, flailed at the last two pitches to end the at bat.

1999: Before the All-Star Game at Fenway Park, all the players gathered around Hall of Famer Ted Williams in an on-field tribute to him. Pedro Martinez struck out five of the first six N.L. batters, getting game MVP honors and helping the A.L. win the game. The two teams combined for 22 strikeouts, a record for the All-Star Game.

2004: In the All-Star Game in Houston, the Astros Roger Clemens gives up six runs in the first inning as the A.L. wins the game 9-4.

2009: The Nationals fire manager Manny Acta, replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Jim Riggleman.

2010: With two outs in the seventh inning at the All-Star Game in Anaheim, Braves catcher Brian McCann hits a three-run double to give the N.L. a 3-1 win, ending their 14-year winless streak against the A.L.. McCann's hit earned him game MVP honors.

2013: The Giants Tim Lincecum pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres. Lincecum threw 148 pitches, the second most in a no-hitter in M.L. history.
 
July 14th:

1916: In a game that ends in a scoreless tie in 17 innings, the Red Sox Carl Mays pitches 15 innings while the Browns Ernie Koob goes the distance.

1956: The Red Sox Mel Parnell pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the White Sox. It was the first no-hitter pitched in the A.L. in three years.

1967: As a member of the Astros, Eddie Mathews hits his 500th career home run. He hits it off the Giants Juan Marichal.

1968: Hank Aaron hits his 500th career home run.

1970: In the 12th inning at the All-Star Game at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, Pete Rose runs over Ray Fosse at home plate and the N.L. wins the game 5-4.

1995: The Dodgers Ramon Martinez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Marlins.

2000: The owners decide to return to playing an unbalanced schedule.

2001: In the Mets 2-0 win over the Red Sox, Bobby Valentine records his 1,000th managerial victory.

2004: The Astros fire manager Jimy Williams and name Phil Garner the interim for the remainder of the season.

2005: With a 4-3 victory over the Giants, the Dodgers become the first franchise to record 10,000 wins.

2008: The Rangers Josh Hamilton sets a Home Run Derby record with 28 first round homers, including 13 straight. He would lose in the finals 5-3 to the Twins Justin Morneau.

2009: The A.L. extends their unbeaten streak over the N.L. to 13 games with a 4-3 win at the All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

2010: The Blue Jays trade shortstop Alex Gonzalez along with minor leaguers Tyler Pastornicky and Tim Collins to the Braves for shortstop Yunel Escobar and pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes.

2013: In the Orioles 7-4 win over the Blue Jays, Chris Davis hits his 37th home run, the most before the All-Star break in A.L. history.
 
July 15th:

1901: The Giants Christy Mathewson becomes the first rookie in the modern era to pitch a no-hitter. He does it in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals.

1939: After the Giants Billy Jurges and umpire George Magerkurth spit at each other due to a disputed foul ball down the left field line, N.L. President Ford Frick orders two foot screens to be fixed on the foul poles. The A.L. would soon follow suit.

1960: During the Dodgers 5-3 win over the Giants, play is stopped for 24 minutes when a ball hit by Willie McCovey into shallow left field cannot be seen because of dense fog.

1962: During a doubleheader nightcap against the Pirates, Stan Musial sets a new N.L. record with his 10,428th at bat.

1967: The right fibula of Bob Gibson is fractured from a line drive hit by Roberto Clemente, sidelining him until Labor Day.

1969: Hank Aaron hits his 534th career home run, moving him ahead of Jimmie Foxx for fourth on the all time list.

1973: The Angels Nolan Ryan pitches his second no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Tigers.

1980: Johnny Bench hits his 314th home run as a catcher, breaking Yogi Berra's record.

1985: The Players Association sets a strike date for August 6th.

1986: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-2 at Houston's Astrodome.

1996: After 2,216 straight starts at shortstop, a M.L. record for any position, Cal Ripken, Jr. plays third base for the first time since June 30, 1982.

1999: The Mariners lose to the Padres 3-2 in the first game at Safeco Field.

1999: In the fifth inning of an 11-9 loss to the A's, the Giants Barry Bonds is intentionally walked for the 294th time, breaking the record held by Hank Aaron.

2003: The Rangers Hank Blalock hits a game winning two run homer off the Dodgers Eric Gagne in the eighth inning to give the A.L. a 7-6 win in the All-Star Game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

2005: The Orioles Rafael Palmerio records his 3,000th hit. He joins Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Eddie Murray as the only ones to do so while also hitting 500 home runs.

2007: In a 10-2 defeat to the Cardinals, the Phillies become the first team in M.L. history to lose 10,000 games.

2008: In an All-Star tying record 15th inning, the Twins Justin Morneau scores on a sac fly by the Rangers Michael Young to give the A.L. a 4-3 win at Yankee Stadium. The game took four hours and 50 minutes, the longest in All-Star Game history.
 
July 16th:

1897: Cap Anson of the Chicago Colts (later Cubs) becomes the first player in M.L. history to record 3,000 hits.

1902: John McGraw begins his 30 year tenure as manager of the New York Giants, losing his debut to the Reds 7-2.

1909: In the longest scoreless game in A.L. history, the Tigers and Senators play to a 0-0 tie in 18 innings.

1948: Branch Rickey agrees to a deal that allows the Dodgers manager Leo Durocher to leave and become the Giants skipper, replacing Mel Ott. Burt Shotton takes over as the Dodgers manager.

1956: The Tigers and Briggs Stadium are sold for $5.5 million to radio executives John Fetzer and Fred Knorr.

1970: The Pirates lose to the Reds 3-2 in the first game at Three Rivers Stadium.

1975: Bowie Kuhn is elected to a second term as Commissioner of Baseball.

1985: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-1.

1990: After sliding head first into first base, Steve Lyons drops his pants to brush dirt away from his uniform in front of 14,770 fans at Tiger Stadium.

2005: After recently being released by the Marlins, Al Leiter signs an agreement with the Yankees.

2006: The Braves Chipper Jones ties a M.L. record by hitting an extra-base hit in his 14th straight game.

2010: In the first game since the death of longtime P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard, there are no public address announcements and the P.A. booth is empty for the game at Yankee Stadium against the Rays.

2013: The A.L. pitchers hold the N.L. to just three hits in a 2-0 win at the All-Star Game in Citi Field.

1914: In a 3-1, 21 innings loss to Rube Marquard and the Giants, the Pirates Babe Adams pitches all 21 innings without issuing a walk.

1917: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau is born in Harvey, Illinois.

1924: The Cardinals Jesse Haines pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Braves.

1936: A 6-0 victory over the Pirates is the start of a 24-game winning streak for the Giants Carl Hubbell.

1941: Joe DiMaggio's record 56-game hitting streak comes to an end in Cleveland against the Indians.

1947: With a doubleheader sweep over the Indians, the Yankees extend their hitting streak to 19 games, tying the A.L. record.

1961: Commissioner Ford Frick declares that if neither Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle cannot hit their 61st home run before the 154th game (the number of games played when Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in 1927), then it will not stand to be the single season record.

1969: Gold Glove pitcher Jim Kaat commits three errors, but the Twins still defeat the White Sox 8-5.

1974: The Cardinals Bob Gibson becomes the second pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts, joining Walter Johnson.

1976: With a 5-4 victory over the Cubs, the Dodgers Walter Alston records his 2,000th managerial win.

1978: After disobeying manager Billy Martin, the Yankees suspend Reggie Jackson five days without pay. During a game in which the Yankees lost, Martin had instructed Jackson to swing away, but he struck out trying to bunt.

1979: The N.L. wins the All-Star game for the eighth straight season, defeating the A.L. 7-6 at Seattle's Kingdome.

1987: The Yankees Don Mattingly becomes the first player in A.L. history to homer in seven straight games.

1990: In a 1-0 loss to the Red Sox, the Twins become the first team in M.L. history to turn two triple plays in the same game.

1991: In a 9-8 extra innings loss to the Royals, the Orioles Sam Horn becomes the first non-DH in M.L. history to strike out six times in a game.

2008: The A's acquire pitcher Joe Blanton from the Phillies for minor league prospects Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer.
 
July 18th:

1921: Babe Ruth hits his 139th career home run, making him the all-time leader in M.L. history.

1927: Ty Cobb becomes the first player in M.L. history to collect 4,000 hits.

1939: The Dodgers trade three minor leaguers, a player to be named later, and $35,000 to the Red Sox for 21-year old minor leaguer and future Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese. The Red Sox dealt Reese due to a less than stellar report from player/manager Joe Cronin, who downplayed Pee Wee's ability to keep his own job as a Boston infielder.

1939: Hall of Famer Lou Brock is born in El Dorado, Arkansas.

1948: The White Sox Pat Seerey hits four home runs in a 12-11 win in eleven innings.

1952: After trailing 11-0 after three innings, the Cardinals storm back to beat the Giants 14-12, equaling the largest comeback win in N.L. history.

1962: For the first time in M.L. history, teammates hit grand slams in the same inning. In the first inning of the Twins 14-3 win over the Indians, Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew hit the historic slams.

1970: Willie Mays records his 3,000th hit.

1983: The Phillies fire manager Pat Corralles and replace him with general manager Paul Owens. At the time, the Phillies were in first place with a record of 43-42.

1986: The Royals announce manager Dick Howser will miss the rest of the season due to treatment of a brain tumor.

1987: Don Mattingly ties Dale Long's M.L. record from 1956 by homering in his eighth straight game.

1990: In the Red Sox 5-4 win over the Twins, the teams combine to turn an A.L. record ten double plays.

1993: The Braves acquire first baseman Fred McGriff from the Padres for minor leaguers Donnie Elliott, Melvin Nieves, and Vince Moore. The Braves went 51-19 the rest of the season and won the N.L. West.

1994: The Kingdome in Seattle is closed after four ceiling tiles drop 180 feet into the seats behind home plate.

1999: The Yankees David Cone pitches a perfect game in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

2003: Hall of Famer Larry Doby dies at age 79.

2006: In a 14-5 win over the Cardinals, the Braves become the first team since 1930 to score ten or more runs in five straight games.
 
July 19th:

1909: In the second inning of a 6-1 win over the Red Sox, shortstop Ambrose McConnell of the Cleveland Naps turn the first unassisted triple play of the century.

1910: Pitching for the Cleveland Naps, Cy Young earns his 500th victory in a 5-4, 11 inning win over the Senators.

1915: In the first inning against the Indians, the Senators set a single-inning M.L. record with eight stolen bases.

1920: Babe Ruth becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in a season.

1924: The Cardinals Hi Bell pitches two complete games in a doubleheader sweep over the Braves. He is the last N.L. pitcher to do so.

1936: Bob Feller makes his M.L. debut, pitching an inning of scoreless relief against the Senators.

1960: Making his M.L. debut, Juan Marichal pitches a one-hitter in the Giants 2-0 win over the Phillies.

1964: In his M.L debut, Luis Tiant pitches a four-hit complete game shutout in leading the Indians past the Yankees and Whitey Ford 3-0.

1966: In the first game played entirely on artificial turf, the Astros beat the Phillies 8-2 in The Astrodome.

1974: The Indians Dick Bosman pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1976: The Red Sox fire manager Darrell Johnson and replace him with Don Zimmer.

1977: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-5 at Yankee Stadium.

1982: The Padres Tony Gwynn records his first M.L. hit.

1989: In a 10-1 win over the Twins. the Indians Joe Carter records his fourth career three-home run game, tying Lou Gehrig's A.L. record.

1993: A fire breaks out in the press box/skybox area of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, delaying the Cardinals/Braves game. With help of a home run from recently acquired Fred McGriff, the Braves rally from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Cardinals 7-5.

1995: Braves Assistant GM Chuck LaMar is named the first general manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

2000: The Blue Jays acquire pitcher Esteban Loaiza from the Rangers for minor league infielder Michael Young.

2001: In the completion of a suspended game, won by the Diamondbacks 3-0 over the Padres, Randy Johnson strikes out 16 batters in relief, setting a M.L. record.

2009: In a 6-4, 12 inning win over the Blue Jays, the Rangers Ian Kinsler becomes the fifth player in M.L. history to hit a leadoff homer for his team and hit a walk-off home run in the same game.
