July 1st:

1859: Amherst defeats Williams College 73-32 in the first college baseball game ever played.

1903: Cy Young pitches his fourth straight complete game shutout in the Americans 1-0 win over the White Sox. He also drove in the only run of the game for Boston.

1910: The White Sox lose to the Browns 2-0 in the first game at Comiskey Park.

1920: The Cardinals lose to the Pirates 6-2 in the first game at Sportsman's Park.

1941: In a doubleheader nightcap against the Red Sox, Joe DiMaggio extends his hitting streak to 44 games, tying Wee Willie Keeler's 1897 M.L. record.

1945: In his first game back after being in the Armed Forces for four years, Hank Greenberg homers to help the Tigers beat the A's 9-5.

1951: Bob Feller pitches his third career no-hitter in the Indians 2-1 win over the Tigers. He joins Larry Corcoran and Cy Young as the only ones in M.L. history to pitch three no-hitters.

1960: H. Gabriel Murphy's option of first refusal to purchase the Senators from owner Calvin Griffith expires. He would later lose two court decisions, thus preventing a move of the franchise to Minnesota.

1982: Orioles manager Earl Weaver moves Cal Ripken, Jr. from third base to shortstop.

1991: In the Angels 14-7 win over the Orioles, the two teams combine to tie a M.L. record 11 home runs.

2003: Hours after acquiring Roberto Alomar from the Mets, the White Sox acquire Carl Everett from the Rangers for minor leagers and cash.

2010: The Giants trade Bengie Molina and cash to the Rangers for Chris Ray and a minor league pitcher.

2010: The Diamondbacks fire manager A.J. Hinch and name bench coach Kirk Gibson interim manager.
 
July 2nd:

1941: Joe DiMaggio, with a three run home run off the Red Sox Dick Newsome, extends his hitting streak to 45 games, breaking the M.L. record.

1962: In a 5-1 win over the Phillies, the Dodgers Johnny Podres ties the N.L. record with eight straight strikeouts.

1963: The Giants Juan Marichal and the Braves Warren Spahn pitch a classic pitchers duel, holding their opponents scoreless for 15 innings. In the bottom of the 16th, Willie Mays homers off Spahn to give the Giants a 1-0 win.

1979: White Sox player/manager Don Kessinger is fired and is replaced as skipper by Tony La Russa.

1985: The Astros Joe Niekro wins his 200th game. He and Phil join Jim and Gaylord Perry as the only pitching brothers to win 200 games each.

1993: Kansas City's home ballpark is changed from Royals Stadium to Kauffman Stadium, honoring Ewing Kauffman, who had owned the club since its inception in 1968. Kauffman would pass away within a month.

1995: Dodger pitcher Hideo Nomo becomes the first Japanese born player to be selected to the All-Star Game.

2002: A total of 62 home runs are hit around MLB, setting a new single day record.

2004: The Diamondbacks fire manager Bob Brenley and replace him with third base coach Al Pedrique.

2013: The Reds Homer Bailey pitches his second career no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Giants.
 
July 3rd:

1912: With a 2-1 win over Brooklyn, the Giants Rube Marquard records his 19th straight victory to start a season, the most in M.L. history to start a season without a loss.

1936: Playing for San Diego in the Pacific Coast League, Ted Williams collects his first professional hit.

1947: The Indians purchase the contract of Larry Doby from Newark, making him the first black player in A.L. history. His first M.L. appearance comes as a pinch-hitter against the White Sox.

1966: In a 17-3 win over the Giants, Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger becomes the first player in N.L. history to hit two grand slams in the same game.

1970: The Angels Clyde Wright pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1973: The Perry brothers start a game against each other for the only time in their careers. Jim gets a no decision with Gaylord taking the loss in the Tigers 5-4 win over the Indians.

1993: Hall of Famer Don Drysdale dies at age 56.

2001: In a 6-5 win over the Rockies, the Padres tie a N.L. record with four sacrifice flies in one game.

2006: In the Giants 5-3 win over the Phillies, Barry Bonds (41), Steve Finely (41), and Moises Alou (40) becomes the first trio of 40-year olds to start in the same outfield in the same game.

2010: With home runs in his first two at bats, Jim Thome raises his career total to 574, passing Harmon Killebrew for tenth on the all time list.
 
July 4th:

1912: The Tigers George Mullins pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Browns.

1939: The Yankees hold Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day. After his #4 is retired, Gehrig addresses the Yankee Stadium crowd, saying the now famous "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth".

1939: Jim Tabor hits two grand slams helping the Red Sox defeat the A's 18-12.

1967: The Niekro brothers become the second sibling to start against each other in the same game. Phil pitches a compete game to lead the Braves past Joe and the Cubs 8-3.

1980: In the second inning of the Astros 8-1 loss to the Reds, Nolan Ryan fans Cesar Geronimo for his 3,000th strikeout.

1983: The Yankees Dave Righetti pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Red Sox.

1984: The Yankees Phil Niekro records his 3,000th strikeout.

1985: In one of the craziest games in M.L. history, the Mets defeat the Braves in 19 innings 16-13. The game takes six hours and ten minutes to play and ends just before 4:00 AM. The remaining fans in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium are treated to the July 4th fireworks show. The fireworks cause some Atlanta residents to call authorities in a panic, thinking the city was being attacked.

1999: The Devil Rays Jose Canseco becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs with four different teams.

2004: With the selections of Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, and Ken Griffey, Jr. to the N.L. All-Stars, it marks the first time three players with 500 home runs would be on the same team.
 
July 5th:

1898: Lizzie Stroud Arlington, pitching for Reading of the Eastern League, becomes the first woman to play organized baseball.

1953: In a 2-0 Phillies win over the Pirates, Robin Roberts pitches his 28th straight complete game.

1987: The A's Mark McGwire becomes the first rookie in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs before the All Star Break.

1987: The Giants trade pitchers Keith Comstock, Mark Davis, and Mark Grant along with third baseman Chris Brown to the Padres for outfielder Kevin Mitchell along with pitchers Dave Dravecky and Craig Lefferts.

1991: The owners give final approval for two new N.L. franchises in Miami and Denver for the 1993 season.

1993: Against the Indians, the A's Rickey Henderson joins Harry Hooper (1913) as the only players in M.L. history to open both games of a doubleheader with a home run.

1998: With a 1-0 win over the Orioles, the Yankees improve their record to 61-20, matching the 1902 Pirates and the 1907 Cubs for the best record through 81 games in M.L. history.

1998: Roger Clemens records his 3,000th strikeout.

2002: Ted Williams dies at age 83.

2004: The Dodgers Eric Gagne blows a save attempt against the Diamondbacks. It ends his M.L. record streak of 84 straight saves.
 
July 6th:

1933: Babe Ruth's two run home run in the third inning off Bill Hallahan is the difference as the A.L. wins 4-2 in the first ever All-Star Game, played in Chicago's Comiskey Park.

1938: At Crosley Field, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-1.

1942: At the Polo Grounds, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1.

1945: The Braves Tommy Holmes extends his hitting streak to 34 games, breaking the N.L. modern record set by Rogers Hornsby in 1922.

1966: The Orioles Boog Powell ties an A.L. record by driving in 11 runs in a doubleheader.

1983: In the 50th anniversary of the first All-Star Game, Fred Lynn hits the first grand slam in the game's history, leading the A.L. to a 13-3 win in Comiskey Park. It ended the N.L.'s 11 game winning streak.

1986: The Braves Bob Horner hits four home runs against the Expos. However, the Braves still lose 11-8.

1989: The Phillies Mike Schmidt becomes the first player retired to be selected to the All-Star Game by the fans. He decides not to play.

1992: Commissioner Fay Vincent, using the "best interest in baseball" power, mandates the N.L. realign to more geographically correct divisions the next season. The move would have sent the Braves and Reds to the Eastern Division with the Cubs and Cardinals moving to the Western. The realignment was approved by 12 of the 14 N.L. owners, but blocked by the Tribune Company, owner of the Cubs.

2013: At age 20, the Nationals Bryce Harper becomes the youngest player selected to be a starter for the N.L. in the All-Star Game.
 
July 7th:

1900: Kid Nichols records his 300th win in the Cubs 11-4 victory over the Beaneaters.

1906: Hall of Famer Satchel Paige is born in Mobile, Alabama.

1923: In a 27-3 win over the Red Sox, the Indians become the first team in A.L. history to score in every inning.

1936: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the first time, defeating the A.L. 4-3 in Boston's Braves Field.

1937: In Washington, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 8-3. Franklin D. Roosevelt throws out the ceremonial first pitch, becoming the first president to attend the All-Star Game.

1948: On his 42nd birthday, Satchel Paige signs a contract with the Indians.

1953: In the Dodgers 9-5 win over the Pirates, they set a new M.L. record with their 24th straight game hitting a home run.

1953: With a 6-3 loss to the Indians, the Browns set a M.L. record with their 20th straight home defeat.

1959: In the eighth inning of the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, Hank Aaron ties the game with an RBI single, then scores the winning run on Willie May's triple, giving the N.L. a 5-4 win.

1964: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-4 at Shea Stadium. The N.L. evens the all time series with 18 wins apiece.

1970: The Braves Rico Carty becomes the first player to be voted in the All-Star Game as a write-in candidate. He was left off the ballots created by managers and general managers before Spring Training.

1998: A new All-Star record 21 runs are scored in Denver's Coors Field in the A.L.'s 13-8 win.

2007: In the fifth inning of the All-Star Game in San Francisco, Ichrio Suzuki hits the first inside the park home run in the game's history, winning MVP honors and leading the A.L. to the win.

2008: The Indians trade C.C. Sabathia to the Brewers for prospects Matt LaPorta, Matt Jackson, Rob Bryson, and Taylor Green.

2011: Shannon Stone, a firefighter from Brownwood, TX, dies after falling from the stands at a Rangers game trying to catch a ball thrown to him by Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton. He fell 20 feet onto concrete pavement below. He was attending the game with his six year old son.
 
July 8th:

1912: The Cubs defeat the Giants 7-2, ending Rube Marquard's winning streak at 19 games.

1935: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium 4-1. The A.L. won the first three AS Games.

1941: Ted Williams' two run homer in the bottom of the ninth leads the A.L. to a 7-5 win in the All-Star Game in Detroit.

1947: At Wrigley Field, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 2-1.

1952: The N.L. wins a rain-shortened to five innings by rain All Star Game 3-2 in Philadelphia. It marked the first one shortened in ASG history.

1958: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 4-3 in Baltimore's Memorial Stadium.

1959: The Reds fire manager Mayo Smith and replace him with Fred Hutchinson.

1976: The Padres Randy Jones wins his 16th game of the season in a 6-3 victory over the Cubs. It was the most wins before the All-Star Break in N.L. history.

2005: The International Olympic Committee eliminates baseball and softball for the 2012 games in London.
 
July 9th:

1903: In a Tri-State League game, Philadelphia pitcher Dan McClellan pitches a perfect game against York, Pennsylvania.

1940: Five N.L. pitchers, Paul Derringer, Bucky Walters, Whit Wyatt, Larry French, and Carl Hubbell combine for the first shutout in All-Star history in a 4-0 win over the A.L.

1946: In the most lopsided game in All-Star history, the A.L. wins 12-0 in Fenway Park.

1953: Robin Roberts streak of complete games ends at 28. The Phillies future Hall of Famer had finished every game he had pitched since August 28th the prior season.

1956: The BBWAA vote to establish the Cy Young Award, given to the league's most outstanding pitcher.

1963: At Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 5-3.

1968: In the first All-Star Game played indoors, the N.L. wins 1-0 in Houston's Astrodome. Willie Mays scores the lone run on a double play ball in the first inning.

1971: In the longest shutout in A.L. history, the A's defeat the Angels 1-0 in 20 innings.

1976: The Astros Larry Dierker pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

1988: In a 6-3 victory over the Mets, Nolan Ryan wins his 100th game with the Astros (also won 134 with the Angels). He joins Cy Young (Cleveland Spiders and Boston Pilgrims) as the only pitchers in M.L. history to win 100 games for a team in both leagues.

1991: Cal Ripken, Jr.'s three run homer helps the A.L. beat the N.L. 4-2 for their fourth straight All-Star Game. Tony La Russa becomes the first manager to win three straight All-Star Games.

1996: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-0 in Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium.

1998: Brewers owner Bud Selig, who had been serving as interim for the last six years, is officially named the ninth commissioner of baseball. To avoid any possible conflicts, his ownership of the Brewers is placed in a trust.

2002: After 11 innings, the All-Star Game in Milwaukee ends in a 7-7 tie.

2011: In the third inning of a 5-4 win over the Rays, Derek Jeter hits a home run off David Price for his 3,000th hit.

2013: In the eighth inning of the Red Sox 11-8 win over the Mariners, David Ortiz records his 1,688th hit as a DH, breaking the record held by Harold Baines.
 
July 10th:

1911: An unruly fan is removed from the Baker Bowl during a Phillies/Cardinals game. It is believed to be the first time a fan was escorted out of a game.

1934: At the All-Star Game in the Polo Grounds, the Giants Carl Hubbell faces an A.L. lineup made up of all future Hall of Famers. He would strike out the first five batters he faces: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin.

1935: Ed Cole of the Galveston Buccaneers pitches the first perfect game in Texas League history in a 1-0 win over the Tulsa Oilers.

1936: In the Phillies 9-6 win over the Pirates, Chuck Klein becomes the first N.L. player in the century to hit four home runs in a game.

1947: The Indians Don Black pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the A's.

1953: In a 6-1 win over the Giants, the Dodgers set a new N.L. record by homering in their 24th straight game.

1954: Hall of Famer Andre Dawson is born in Miami, Florida.

1962: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1 in Washington. President John F. Kennedy throws the ceremonial first pitch.

1968: The A.L. and N.L. both agree on expansion and new postseason format. The leagues will divide into two six team divisions and play a best of five championship series starting for the 1969 season.

1984: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela and the Mets Dwight Gooden combine to strikeout six straight A.L. hitters. At age 19, Gooden becomes the youngest All-Star in history.

2001: At the All-Star Game in Seattle, the A.L. wins 4-1. Cal Ripken, Jr. homers in his final All-Star Game and is named MVP.

2009: The Giants Jonathan Sanchez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Padres.
 
July 11th:

1914: Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth makes his M.L. debut, picking up the win in Boston's 4-3 victory over the Indians.

1939: At Yankee Stadium, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-1.

1944: The Cubs Phil Cavaretta sets an All-Star Game record by reaching base five straight times in the N.L.'s 7-4 win at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field.

1950: Red Schoendienst's 14th inning home run gives the N.L. a 4-3 win at Comiskey Park. It was the first time the All-Star Game went to extra innings, first time the N.L. won at an A.L. ballpark, and the first midsummer classic to be shown on television.

1961: The N.L. wins at Candlestick Park 5-4 in the first of two All-Star games.

1967: In the longest game in All-Star history, the N.L. takes the victory in 15 innings 2-1 at Anaheim. Tony Perez's homer off Catfish Hunter was the game winner.

1976: The Braves hold a promotion at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium called Headlocks and Wedlocks. Before the game, 34 couples are married at home plate and championship wrestling afterward. In between, the Braves defeat the Mets 9-8.

1978: At San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-3. The Dodgers Steve Garvey becomes the game's first two time MVP.

1980: Charlie Hough is sold to the Rangers by the Dodgers.

1985: Nolan Ryan records his 4,000th strikeout.

1989: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 5-3 at Anaheim. Game MVP Bo Jackson starts the game for the A.L. with a monster home run off Rick Reuschel.

1994: In the Cardinals 8-1 win over the Rockies, Ozzie Smith passes Luis Aparaicio on the all time assists leader for shortstops.

1995: At the Ballpark in Arlington, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-2.

1999: The first All-Star Futures Game is held at Fenway Park. The World team defeats Team USA 7-0.

2000: At Atlanta's Turner Field, the A.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-3. Game MVP Derek Jeter and Chipper Jones of the hometown Braves both go 3-3 at the plate.

2002: The Marlins trade Ryan Dempster to the Reds for Juan Encarnacion. The Marlins also trade Cliff Floyd, Wilton Guerrero, and Claudio Vargas to the Expos for Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd, Mike Mordecai, and Justin Wayne.

2002: The Indians fire manager Charlie Maunel. Third base coach Joel Skinner is named interim manager.

2006: A two run triple by the Rangers Michael Young gives the A.L. a 3-2 win in the All-Star Game at Pittsburgh's PNC Park.

2010: Longtime Yankee Stadium P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard dies at age 99. Given the nickname "Voice of God" by Reggie Jackson, Sheppard announced over 4,500 games in 56 years at the Bronx ballpark.
 
July 12th:

1901: In the Boston Americans 5-3 win over the A's, Cy Young records his 300th victory.

1931: After combining for nine doubles in the first game, the Cubs and Cardinals hit another 23 in the second, for a combined total of 32 doubles in the doubleheader.

1943: An Armed Forces team managed by Babe Ruth and featured as players Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams defeat the Braves 9-8 in a fund-raising game.

1945: The Braves Tommy Holmes goes hitless, ending his N.L. record 37 game hitting streak (broken by Pete Rose in 1978).

1949: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 11-7 at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. The A.L.'s Larry Doby and the N.L.'s Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Don Newcombe become the first black players to appears in the All-Star Game.

1951: The Yankees Allie Reynolds pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Bob Feller and the Indians.

1955: In the bottom of the 12th inning of the All-Star Game in Milwaukee, Stan Musial hits a walk-off home run in the N.L.'s 6-5 win.

1966: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 2-1 in St. Louis' Busch Stadium.

1979: One of the most infamous promotions in baseball history is held in Comiskey Park as the White Sox hold "Disco Demolition Night". Fans were allowed in the gates for a doubleheader between the White Sox and Tigers for 98 cents if they brought a disco record. An overflow crowd was at the ballpark. After the first game, the record were blown up in the outfield. Many of the fans then stormed the field, causing fires, and refusing to leave the field. After a delay of an hour and 16 minutes, the poor condition of the field forced the White Sox to forfeit the nightcap to the Tigers.

1990: In a game shortened to six innings due to weather, the White Sox Melido Perez pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Yankees.

1994: At Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh, the N.L. wins the All-Star Game 8-7, ending their six year losing streak. The Braves Fred McGriff hit a two run homer off Lee Smith in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, then Tony Gwynn scores on Moises Alou's double, giving the N.L. a dramatic 8-7 win.

1997: Pitching at Fenway for the first time as an opponent, Roger Clemens strikes out 16 in leading the Blue Jays to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox.

1997: In a 3-0 win over the Astros, the Pirates pitch the first extra innings no-hitter in M.L. history. Francisco Cordova worked the first nine innings with Ricardo Rincon working the tenth. The game ends and no-hitter complete on a three run homer in the bottom of the tenth by Mark Smith.

2000: The Reds trade Denny Neagle and Mike Frank to the Yankees for minor leaguers Drew Henson, Jackson Melian, Ed Yarnell, and Brian Reith.

2000: The Phillies trade Andy Ashby to the Braves for Bruce Chen and Jimmy Osting.

2006: The Devil Rays trade Aubrey Huff to the Astros for prospect Mitch Talbot and Ben Zobrist.

2011: The Mets trade Francisco Rodriguez to the Brewers for two players to be named later.
 
July 13th:

1896: The Phillies Ed Delahanty hits four home runs in a 9-8 loss to the Colts.

1934: Babe Ruth hits his 700th career home run.

1943: The A.L. defeats the N.L. 5-3 in the first All-Star Game played at night.

1948: The A.L. defeats the N.L. 5-2 in the All-Star Game at Sportsman's Park.

1954: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 11-9 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

1963: In the Yankees 7-4 victory over the A's, Early Wynn records his 300th win. It would be his last win.

1965: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-5 at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minnesota.

1971: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-4 at Tiger Stadium. In the fourth inning, Reggie Jackson hits a home run on the right field roof.

1976: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-1 at Veterans Stadium.

1982: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the 11th straight season, beating the A.L. 4-1 in Montreal.

1991: Four Orioles, Bob Milacki, Mike Flanigan, Mark Williamson, and Gregg Olson, combine to pitch a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the A's.

1993: The A.L. wins the All-Star 9-3 at Baltimore's Camden Yards. The game is most remembered for John Kruk comically flailing at two Randy Johnson pitches after one goes a little too close for his comfort.

1999: Before the All-Star Game at Fenway Park, all the players gather around Hall of Famer Ted Williams in a pregame tribute. In the game, Pedro Martinez strikes out five of the first six N.L. hitter on the way to an A.L. win.

2004: The A.L. scores six runs in the first inning on the way to a 9-4 win in the All-Star Game at Houston.

2009: The Nationals fire manager Manny Acta and replace him with Jim Riggleman on an interim basis.

2010: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game for the first time since 1996. The Braves Brian McCann hits a three run double with two outs in the seventh, carrying the N.L. to a 3-1 win at Anaheim and also named MVP.

2013: The Giants Tim Lincecum pitches a no-hitter in a 9-0 win over the Padres.
 
July 14th:

1916: The Browns Ernie Koob pitches all 17 innings against the Red Sox in a game that ends in a 0-0 tie. Carl Mays goes the first 15 for the Red Sox with Dutch Leonard pitching the final two.

1967: With the Astros, Eddie Mathews his his 500th career home run, doing so against Juan Marichal in San Francisco.

1968: Hank Aaron hits his 500th career home run.

1968: In a 6-1 doubleheader nightcap win over the Reds, Don Wilson ties the M.L. record for a nine inning game with 18 strikeouts. In that same game, Astros catcher John Bateman ties the M.L. record with nine straight putouts to start a game.

1970: In the 12th inning of the All-Star Game at Riverfront Stadium, Pete Rose runs over Ray Fosse at home plate, giving the N.L. a 5-4 win. The collision was a reason that the Indians catcher would be shortened.

1995: The Dodgers Ramon Martinez pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Marlins.

2000: In the top of the sixth against the Padres, the Mariners John Olerud hits what appears to be a game tying double. However, it was disallowed because umpire Jim Wolfe called time right before the pitch when a ball escaped from the visitors bullpen. In the same at bat, he hits a three run homer to give the Mariners a 4-2 lead and eventually the win.

2004: The Astros fire manager Jimy Williams and names Phil Garner as interim manager.

2005: With a 4-3 victory over the rival Dodgers, the Giants become the first franchise in M.L. history to win 10,000 games.

2010: The Blue Jays trade Alex Gonzalez along with minor leaguers Tim Collins and Tyler Pastornicky to the Braves for Yunel Escobar, and Jo-Jo Reyes.

2013: In the Orioles 7-4 win over the Blue Jays, Chris Davis ties Reggie Jackson's 1969 A.L. record with 37 home runs before the All-Star Break.
 
July 15th:

1901: The Giants Christy Mathewson becomes the first rookie to pitch a no-hitter in the modern era, doing so in a 5-0 win over St. Louis.

1939: After an altercation between the Giants Billy Jurges and umpire George Magerkurth over a disputed foul ball call down the left field line, N.L. president Ford Frick orders two screens to be installed on the foul poles. The A.L. would soon follow.

1962: Stan Musial, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Pirates, makes his 10,428th at bat, passing Honus Wagner's N.L. record.

1969: Hank Aaron hits his 534th home run, passing Jimmie Foxx for fourth all time.

1973: Nolan Ryan pitches a no-hitter in the Angels 6-0 win over the Tigers. He becomes the first in M.L. history to throw two conventional no-hitters in the same season.

1980: Johnny Bench hits his 314th career home run as a catcher, breaking Yogi Berra's M.L. record.

1985: The Players Association sets a strike date for August 6th.

1986: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-2 at Houston's Astrodome. It turned out to be the final game the Royals Dick Howser would manage. Howser said he felt ill after some mental lapses during the game. He would be diagnosed with a brain tumor.

1990: In the White Sox 8-5 win over the Yankees, Bobby Thigpen reaches 30 saves in a season quicker than any reliever in M.L. history.

1996: After 2,216 straight starts at shortstop, Cal Ripken, Jr. plays third base for the first time since June 30, 1982.

1999: The Mariners lose 3-2 to the Padres in the first game played at Safeco Field.

2003: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-6 at Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field.

2005: Rafael Palmerio records his 3,000th hit.

2007: With a 10-2 defeat to the Cardinals, the Phillies become the first team in M.L. history to lose 10,000 games. A sellout crowd of 44,872 at Philadelphia's Citizen's Bank Park cheers when the "milestone" is accomplished.

2008: In a record time wise for the longest game in All-Star history, the A.L. wins 4-3 as Michael Young drives home the winning run in the 15th inning. The game at Yankee Stadium took four hours and 50 minutes to play at the 15 innings tied an All-Star record. In the same game, the Marlins Dan Uggla becomes the first in All-Star history to commit three errors.
 
July 16th:

1897: Cap Anson becomes the first player in M.L. history to collect 3,000 hits.

1920: After 16 scoreless innings, Earl Hamilton gives up seven runs in the 17th inning and the Giants win 7-0. Rube Benton pitches all 17 shutout innings for New York.

1948: With an agreement between Branch Rickey and Giants owner Horace Stoneman, Leo Durocher is released as Dodgers manager and replaces Mel Ott as New York's skipper. Burt Shotton replaces Durocher as Dodgers manager.

1956: A group led by radio executives John Fetzer and Fred Knorr buys the Tigers and Briggs Stadium from Walter Briggs for $5.5 million. Briggs was ordered to sell by family estate administrators to sell the ownership he inherited from his father. The deal would keep Briggs on as general manager and executive vie president, but wanting to keep the franchise, he resigned from both position prior to the next season.

1969: Rod Carew steals home for the seventh time, breaking the A.L. record and tying Pete Rose's N.L. record.

1970: The Pirates lose to the Reds 3-2 in the first game at Three Rivers Stadium.

1975: Bowie Kuhn is elected to a second term as commissioner.

1985: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 6-1.

1990: After a head first slide to beat out a bunt hit at first base, the White Sox Steve Lyons drops his pants to get some dirt out, not realizing where he was. An embarrassed Lyons tried quickly to pull his pants back up in front of 14,770 shocked fans at Tiger Stadium.

2003: The Mets trade Armando Benitez to the Yankees for three pitching prospects.

2003: Playing for the independent league St. Paul's Saints, 77 year old Minnie Minoso becomes the first player in professional history to play in seven decades. He walks as a designated hitter.

2006: In the Yankees 6-4 win over the White Sox, Mariano Rivera records his 400th save.

2006: The Braves Chipper Jones ties a M.L. record by recording an extra base hit in 14 straight games.

2013: The A.L. wins the All-Star Game 3-0 at New York's Citi Field.
 
July 17th:

1917: Hall of Famer Lou Boudreau is born in Harvey, Illinois.

1924: The Cardinals Jesse Haines pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Braves.

1936: The Giants defeat the Pirates 6-0, starting the 24 game winning streak for Carl Hubbell.

1941: Joe DiMaggio's record hitting streak ends at 56 games against the Indians in Cleveland.

1947: The Yankees sweep a doubleheader from the Indians to extend their winning streak to 19 games, tying the A.L. record set by the White Sox in 1906.

1961: Ty Cobb dies at age 74.

1969: Gold Glove pitcher Jim Kaat commits three errors, but the Twins still beat the White Sox 8-5.

1974: Bob Gibson joins Walter Johnson as the only pitchers in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts.

1974: Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean dies at age 64.

1976: The Dodgers Walter Alston becomes the sixth manager in M.L. history to win 2,000 games.

1979: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-6 at Seattle's Kingdome.

1987: The Yankees Don Mattingly becomes the first player in A.L. history to homer in seven straight games.

1990: The Twins become the first team in M.L. history to turn two triple plays in one game. However, they still lose 1-0 to the Red Sox.

1991: In a 9-8 extra innings loss to the Royals, the Orioles Sam Horn becomes the first non-pitcher in M.L. history to strike out six straight time in a game.

2008: The A's trade Joe Blanton to the Phillies for three prospects.
 
July 18th:

1921: Babe Ruth hits his 139th career home run, making him the all time leader.

1927: Ty Cobb becomes the first player in M.L. history to record 4,000 hits.

1939: After a not so great scouting report on him, the Red Sox send Pee Wee Reese to the Dodgers for a player to be named later, three minor leaguers, and $35,000.

1940: Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre is born in Brooklyn, New York.

1948: The White Sox Pat Seerey hits four home runs in a 12-11 win over the A's.

1962: In the first inning of the Twins 14-3 win over the Indians, Bob Allison and Harmon Killebrew become the first teammates to hit a grand slam in the same inning.

1970: Willie Mays records his 3,000th hit.

1983: With a 43-42 record, the first place Phillies fire manager Pat Corrales and replace him with general manager Paul Owens. The Phillies would go on and win the pennant.

1986: The Royals announce manager Dick Howser will miss the rest of the season due to a brain tumor.

1986: In a 5-0 win over the Rangers, the Tigers Jack Morris pitches his third straight complete game shutout.

1987: Don Mattingly homers in his eighth straight game, tying Dale Long's 1956 M.L. record.

1990: In the Red Sox 5-4 win over the Twins, the teams combine to set an A.L. record with ten double plays.

1993: The Braves acquire Fred McGriff from the Padres for minor leaguers Melvin Nievis, Vince Moore, and Donnie Elliott.



1994: Seattle's Kingdome is closed after four ceiling tiles fall 180 feet into the stands behind home plate. The Mariners would go on the road for 22 games before the season ends due to the players strike.

1999: The Yankees David Cone pitches the 16th perfect game in M.L. history in a 6-0 win over the Expos.

2006: In a 14-5 win over the Cardinals, the Braves become the first team since the 1930 Yankees to score ten or more runs in five straight games.

2009: Ground is broken in Miami for the future Marlins Park.
 
July 19th:

1902: The Giants lose to the Phillies 5-3 in John McGraw's first game as manager. It started McGraw's 30-year run as the Giants manager.

1909: During the second inning of Cleveland's 6-1 win over the Red Sox, Neal Ball turns the first triple play of the post 1900 era.

1910: In Cleveland's 5-4 win over Washington, Cy Young records his 500th victory.

1915: The Senators steal eight bases in one inning off Indians catcher Steve O'Neil, setting a M.L. record.

1920: Babe Ruth becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit 30 home runs in a season.

1924: The Cardinals Hi Bell pitches two complete games in 6-1 and 2-1 wins over the Braves. He is the last N.L. pitcher to throw two complete games on the same day.

1936: The Indians Bob Feller makes his M.L. debut, pitching one inning of relief against the Senators. He walked two, but allowed no runs or hits.

1960: In his M.L. debut, Juan Marichal pitches a one-hitter in the Giants 2-0 win over the Phillies.

1964: Making his M.L. debut, Luis Tiant pitches a complete game, allowing four hits in the Red Sox 3-0 win over the Yankees.

1966 In the first game played on artificial turf, the Astros defeat the Phillies 8-2 in the Astrodome. The new turf becomes known as "Astroturf".

1974: The Indians Dick Bosman pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the A's.

1976: The Red Sox fire manager Darrell Johnson and replace him with third base coach Don Zimmer.

1977: The N.L. wins the All-Star Game 7-5 at Yankee Stadium.

1982: Tony Gwynn records his first M.L. hit. It was the first of 3,141 career hits.

1993: The Cardinals/Braves game at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium is delayed when a fire breaks out in the skybox and press box areas. The newly acquired Fred McGriff homers and the Braves rally from a 5-0 deficit to win 7-5, starting the team's rally from a 9 1/2 game deficit to the Giants to win the N.L. West.

1995: The Devil Rays name Chuck LaMar as their first general manager.

2000: The Blue Jays acquire pitcher Esteban Loaiza from the Rangers for minor league infielder Michael Young.
 
July 20th:

1906: Mal Eason of the Brooklyn Superbas pitches a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over the Cardinals.

1926: The A's Al Simmons plays in his 394th game to start his career, setting the A.L. record (broken by Hideki Matsui in 2005).

1944: The Browns Nels Potter is suspended for ten games. He is the first to be disciplined for using a spitball.

1958: The Tigers Jim Bunning pitches a no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Red Sox.

1969: During the third inning of the Cubs/Phillies game in Philadelphia, play is halted when the crowd is informed that Neil Armstrong tells mission control in Houston "The Eagle Has Landed" on the moon. Both teams move toward their respective baselines and look skyward towards the moon. Before play resumes, Kate Smith's version of "God Bless America" is played and a prayer for the astronauts is said over the loudspeakers.

1970: The Dodgers Bill Singer pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Phillies.

1973: The White Sox Wilbur Wood becomes the last pitcher to start both ends of a doubleheader. He takes the loss in both games to the Yankees by scores of 12-2 and 7-0. He starts the second game after not getting out of the first inning in Game 1.

1976: Hank Aaron hits the last of his 755 career home runs.

1987: In the Yankees 7-1 win over the Twins, Don Mattingly ties Hal Chase's 1906 record with 22 putouts.

2006: The Indians trade reliever Bob Wickman to the Braves for Class A catcher Max Ramirez.
