June 22nd:

1926: The Cardinals pick up future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander off waivers from the Cubs.

1932: The National League approves the use of uniform numbers to identify players.

1944: In a game shortened to five innings, the Braves Jim Tobin pitches a no-hitter against the Phillies.

1976: In the seventh inning of the Padres 4-2 win over the Giants, Randy Jones ties Christy Mathewson's N.L. record of pitching 68 consecutive innings without a walk. His streak ends the next inning.

1982: Pete Rose records his 3,772nd career hit, passing Hank Aaron for second on the all-time list.

1984: The Griffith Family sells the Minnesota Twins to Carl Pohlad. The family had owned the team since the franchise started as the Washington Senators in 1920.

1987: Tom Seaver ends his comeback attempt with the Mets and announces his retirement. Seaver won 311 games, 198 with the Mets.

1993: In his final day as a player, 45-year old Carlton Fisk plays in his 2,226th game at catcher, breaking Bob Boone's record. After playing the first 11 years of his career with the Red Sox, he finished the rest with the White Sox.

1999: Hack Wilson, 51 years after his death, is given credit for another RBI in 1930, increasing his record total to 191 for that season. Historian Jerome Holtzman discoved the Cubs outfielder didn't get credit for driving in Kiki Cuyler in a game played in July that season.

2001: The Braves trade reliever John Rocker and minor leaguer Troy Cameron to the Indians for relievers Steve Reed, Steve Karsay, and cash. Rocker had become a controversial figure after comments he made in a Sports Illustrated article caused a firestorm. He made references about New Yorkers, unwed mothers, homosexuals, and immigrants in the infamous article.

2002: Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile is found dead in his Chicago hotel room at 33 years old. He became the first active player to die during a season since Thurman Munson in 1979.
 
June 23rd:

1933: The Senators Joe Cronin sets a M.L. with 15 hits in a four game span.

1946: In the fourth inning of a 15-10 loss to the Giants, the Cubs Eddie Waitkus and Marv Rickert hit back-to-back inside-the-park home runs.

1961: The Twins replace manager Cookie Lavagetto with Sam Mele.

1963: After hitting his 100th career home run, the Mets Jimmy Piersall rounds the bases in correct order, but does it while going backwards. He will be released two days later by manager Casey Stengel.

1971: The Phillies Rick Wise homers twice, drives in three runs, and pitches a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over the Reds. Wise threw only 95 pitches.

1973: After pitching his high school team to a state championship just 20 days earlier, David Clyde makes his first M.L. start for the Rangers. He pitches five innings to help Texas defeat the Twins 4-3.

1984: Against the Cardinals, the Cubs Ryne Sandberg homers in the ninth to tie the game 9-9, then ties the game 11-11 in the next inning with a two out, two run homer. A RBI single by Dave Owen the next inning wins the game 12-11 for the Cubs.

1986: In a 6-5 win over the Dodgers, the Braves set a N.L. record by stranding 18 runners on base.

2003: Barry Bonds becomes the first player in M.L. history to have 500 stolen bases and 500 home runs.

2010: The Marlins fire manager Fredi Gonzalez, bench coach Carlos Tosca, and hitting coach Jim Presley. Edwin Rodriguez, who had been managing the team's AAA club in New Orleans, is named interim manager.

2012: Giving the Phillies a 7-6 win over the Rays, Jim Thome sets a M.L. record with his 13th career walk-off home run.
 
June 23rd:

1947: During the Dodgers 4-2 win over the Pirates, Jackie Robinson steals home for the first time. He would so 19 times in his career.

1950: Willie Mays makes his professional debut, playing for the Giants Class B team in Trenton.

1955: In the Senators 18-7 loss to the Tigers, Harmon Killebrew hits the first of his 573 career home runs.

1970: The Reds win in the final game played at Crosley Field.

1977: During the Astros 6-5 win over the Giants, Bob Watson becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit for the cycle in both leagues.

1979: In the A's 5-1 win over the Rangers, Rickey Henderson makes his M.L. debut. He singles, doubles, and collects the first of his M.L. record 1,406 stolen bases.

1992: Commissioner Fay Vincent bans Yankees pitcher Steve Howe from baseball for repeated drug offenses. In November, an arbitrator overturns the ban.

1997: In the Mariners 4-1 loss to the A's, Randy Johnson breaks the A.L. record for strikeouts by a left-hander with 19.

2011: The Nationals name John McLaren interim manager, replacing Jim Riggleman who abruptly resigned the day before.
 
June 25th:

1937: In the Cubs 11-2 win over the Dodgers, Augie Galan becomes the first player in N.L. history to homer from both sides of the plate.

1961: In the Orioles 9-8, 14 inning win over the Angels, the two teams combine to set a M.L. record by using 16 pitchers.

1976: The Rangers Toby Harrah becomes the first shortstop in M.L. history to play both games of a doubleheader without having a single fielding chance.

1988: Cal Ripken Jr. plays in his 1,000th straight game in the Orioles 10-3 loss to the Red Sox.

1995: In the Rockies 11-3 win over the Padres, Andres Galarraga becomes the fourth player in M.L. history to homer in three straight innings.

1998: In the Cubs 6-4 loss to the Tigers, Sammy Sosa hits his 19th homer in June, setting a M.L. record for home runs hit in a single month.

1999: The Cardinals Jose Jimenez pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

1999: In the eighth inning of the Orioles 9-8 loss to the Yankees, Jesse Orosco makes his 1,051st relief appearance, setting a new M.L. record.
 
June 26th:

1916: The Indians become the first team in M.L. history to wear numbers on their uniforms. The players wore numbers based on the position they played in the field.

1924: For the first time in M.L. history, two brothers started against each other in the same game Giants right-hander Virgil Barnes opposite of the Braves Jesse Barnes. Neither gets a decision in the Giants 11-7 win.

1935: In a doubleheader sweep over the Braves, the Pirates Lloyd Waner sets the M.L. record with 18 putouts.

1938: The Giants Carl Hubbell wins his 200th game in a 5-1 victory over the Cubs.

1946: Future Hall of Famer Mel Ott ends his playing career and focuses solely on managing duties. Ott was hitting .048 at the time of his decision.

1960: In the Cubs doubleheader sweep over the Pirates, Ron Santo makes his M.L. debut, going 3-7 and driving in five runs.

1968: The Cardinals Bob Gibson pitches his fifth straight shutout in a 3-0 win over the Pirates.

2010: The Diamondbacks Edwin Jackson pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Rays.

2011: The Nationals name name senior advisor Davey Johnson as manager for the rest of the season.
 
June 27th:

1930: At age 47, the A's Jack Quinn becomes the oldest player to hit a home run in M.L. history.

1977: The Giants Willie McCovey becomes the first player in M.L. history to hit two home runs in one inning twice in his career.

1980: The Dodgers Jerry Reuss pitches a no-hitter in an 8-0 win over the Giants.

1982: In a 2-0 win over the Reds, the Braves tie a M.L. record by turning seven double plays.

1986: In the Giants 7-6, 12 inning win over the Reds, Robby Thompson sets a M.L. record by being caught stealing four times.

1993: In a 5-3 defeat to the Cardinals, the Mets Anthony Young sets a M.L. record with his 24th straight loss.

1999: The Mariners defeat the Rangers 5-2 in the final game at the Kingdome.

2002: The Indians trade pitcher Bartolo Colon to the Expos for first baseman Lee Stevens, cash, and minor league prospects Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee, and Grady Sizemore.

2003: In the first inning against the Marlins, the Red Sox set a M.L. record by scoring ten runs before recording an out and also tie an A.L. record with 14 runs scored in that first inning.

2010: The Indians trade Russell Branyan to the Mariners for AAA outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and shortstop Juan Diaz.

2010: Jamie Moyer allows his 506th home run, breaking the M.L. record held by Robin Roberts.

2011: The Dodgers file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court.

1907: The Senators steal 13 bases against the Yankees, all of catcher Branch Rickey.

1910: In the Cubs 11-1 win over the Reds, Joe Tinker becomes the first player in M.L. history to steal home twice in the same game.

1959: In the Phillies 6-0 loss to the Giants, Wally Post becomes the first player in M.L. history to throw out two runners from the outfield in the same inning.

1962: Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane dies at age 59.

1970: The Pirates sweep a doubleheader from the Cubs in the final games at Forbes Field, their home field since 1909.

1979: The Giants trade Bill Madlock, Lenny Randle, and Dave Roberts to the Pirates for Ed Whitson, Fred Breining, and Al Holland.

1991: In an 8-5 win over the Astros, the Reds Barry Larkin joins Ernie Banks and Fred Patek as the only shortstops in M.L. history to hit three home runs in a game.

2001: After 20 years with the Padres, Tony Gwynn announces he will retire at the end of the season.

2007: Frank Thomas hit his 500th career home run.

2007: Craig Biggio records his 3,000th hit.

2009: In a 4-2 Yankees win over the Mets, Mariano Rivera joins Trevor Hoffman as the only pitchers to record 500 saves in M.L. history.

2012: The Atlanta Braves induct Chipper Jones into their Hall of Fame and retire his #10.
 
June 29th:

1905: In the eighth inning with the Giants 11-1 win over the Brooklyn Superbas, Archibald "Moonlight" Graham makes his M.L. debut as a defensive substitute. It would be his only M.L. appearance and never got an at bat in the majors. Later, he would become immortalized in W.P. Kinsella's book Shoeless Joe" and the hit move Field of Dreams.

1913: In the Reds 9-6 win over the Cubs, the teams used only one baseball. There were no home runs or any foul balls that went into the stands.

1936: Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew is born in Payette, Idaho.

1941: In the first game of a doubleheader, Joe Dimaggio extends his hitting streak to 41 games, tying George Sisler's M.L. record. He breaks it in the nightcap.

1950: The Red Sox defeat the A's 22-14, setting a new A.L. record with 36 runs scored in a game.

1960: While being swept by the Dodgers, the Phillies tie a M.L. record by striking out 24 times in a doubleheader.

1972: The A's trade Denny McLain to the Braves for Orlando Cepeda.

1975: The Reds in a doubleheader, extend their errorless streak to 14 games, setting a new M.L. record.

1986: The White Sox trade Tom Seaver to the Red Sox for Steve Lyons.

1990: For the first time since 1917, two no-hitters are pitched on the same day. The A's Dave Stewart pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Blue Jays while the Dodgers Fernando Valenzuela does the same in a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals.

2000: Under increased security, the Braves John Rocker makes his first appearance at Shea Stadium since his infamous Sports Illustrated article that featured inappropriate comments about New Yorkers.

2000: The Indians trade David Justice to the Yankees for Ricky Ledee and two players to be named later.

2004: The Diamondbacks Randy Johnson becomes the fourth pitcher in M.L. history to record 4,000 strikeouts, joining Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, and Steve Carlton.

2005: The Astro Craig Biggio is hit by a pitch for the 268th time in his career, breaking Don Baylor's M.L. record.

2010: In the College World Series, Whit Merrifield hits a walk-off RBI single in the 11th inning to give South Carolina a 2-1 win over UCLA, giving the Gamecocks their first national championship in any men's sport.

1962: The Dodgers Sandy Koufax pitches a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over the Mets.

2006: In a 5-2 loss to the Marlins, the Red Sox play their 17th straight errorless game, setting a new M.L. record.

2007: Jacoby Ellsbury makes his M.L. debut with the Red Sox, becoming the first from the Navajo tribe to play in the majors.
