Trade deadline thread

I think the speculation is more about Anthopoulos' moves last deadline. He traded for Odorizzi last year when everyone was healthy. I think that's leading some to believe he'll go that route again. We'll know more in a week whether that theory is valid.

You don’t wanna repeat past mistakes and seeing how Strider went down last year and Fried and Wright have missed most of this year I don’t think he goes the mediocre route this time if he can help it. I’m sure he’s trying to find a bargain but that may not be out there. This team is a WS contending team and every effort needs to be made to make sure they get there. The best problem we could have is that everybody is healthy come October and we have to move a couple of SP to the bullpen.

Soto apparently is available. I could get behind

Elder
Grissom
Shuster

For

Soto
Snell
Hader

Soto has another year of control and after what they gave up it’ll cost a lot more than that. Hader and Snell would be pretty amazing. Hader coming out to close a game in the WS for us would be legit.

All 3 players we'd be giving up are MLB ready with 6 years of control each and Elder is already an All-Star. I think the package is pretty solid.

Just bc they have 6 years of control doesn’t mean they are any good. Shuster is doodoo and nobody wants him. It would take AJSS and another good prospect too.

Shuster is a rookie and was our number 1 prospect coming into the year. I highly doubt nobody wants him. Elder is also the headliner of our package not Shuster or Grissom and he'd be a huge get for a selling team.

It’d be the package the padres would look for. Not necessarily those players per say but they’d want guys that are controlled in the future, but can help this years team as well

AJSS, Grissom, and Elder would be a strong offer bc of the control and you can dream on all 3. I’m not worried about losing Grissom but AJSS has a lot of potential but also the thought of adding Soto behind Acuna in the lineup is pretty tempting.

Man I love trade season just for the comedy gold produced by trade proposals so completely out of touch with reality they make you chuckle out loud!

Here’s a few clues: Giolito is worse than snell. He was just traded for someone roughly as valuable as Grissom. Shuster had virtually no value. Everyone on the planet knows Elder isn’t a legit all star.

I’ll let you puzzle together the rest of the math from there.

Forget Soto. We don't have the capital for him.

I suspect we could get the combo of Snell/Hader but it's going to take something like AJSS, Grissom, and Elder.

But even then why would the Padres want Grissom? They have their middle infield locked up for a ton of years and a lot of money.

They would likely get far more than that trading those guys individually. That package would likely be short of what they are looking for Soto by himself.

Shuster and Grissom are essentially still prospects, and not elite prospects. So the bones of this deal is Elder, and how San Diego views Elder going forward.

I can promise you that if we thought Elder was a 4 WAR type of pitcher over the next 5 years, we wouldn't be trading him for rentals. Likewise, San Diego is unlikely to be super intrigued by a package headlined by a 2-3 WAR pitcher.

Depends on how they look at it of course. But if the plan is to remain in contention next season and beyond, getting a back end rotation piece is not a bad get over prospects that may or may not contribute.

By adding Elder, they get a guy who has had success at the big league level in a hitter friendly park. Going to Petco Park where it is more neutral or even pitcher friendly at times, could be encouraging. Grissom is a guy that can hit, but is questionable on defense for sure. But he is piece that can help a team or be a trade chip. Shuster is essentially the throw in piece here.
