Trade deadline thread

Making it look like I am doing on a rainy evening, less than an hour until close.....

Saw a few internet sites try to build a "Braves package" for Ohtani. Let me preface this by saying in no way in a million years do I believe we get him or even get the Angels GM to pick up the phone when he sees the Atl area code.....BUT for sake of conversation....

The sites build a deal around the Braves sending out Freid, Wright, Shuster, Grissom, Smith-Shawver or some iteration of that. If the Angels GM said that would be enough to pull the trigger, would you do it? At first glance, I thought no damn way. But the more I think of it, I could at least see the logic behind it...We have our entire core locked up for most of the rest of the decade, except for Freid and Wright. Wright has been struggling with shoulder issues this year which can be the kiss of death for a pitchers career. We got our magical year from him last season with 20+ wins and a decent showing in the playoffs. Freid is the one that is hard to let go. However, being that he is 1 year away from FA, it is surprising to not have him locked up at this point. You have to assume that we have already given him at least 1 or multiple offers that he has turned down quietly...That being that case, do you let him walk after next season and recoup a comp pick? The Braves have a good idea the number it will take to sign him and have obviously not come close to meeting that number, ala Freeman and Swanson. Being from CA, maybe makes it easier for LAA to resign him Grissom could be a good player, but doesn't seem to have a position here going forward outside of being a utility player. Shuster is organizational filler for a team like the Braves. Smith-Shawver is a wild card.

Again, not saying it would happen in a million years, but if that trade was on the table, would you pull the trigger?

Unless I secretly know Fried is gonna blow his elbow out with TJ surgery, no way I give them a year of controlled Maximus for 2.5 months of Shohei.

Again, the premises of this would be if the Braves view 2 1/2 months of Ohtani would be worth more than a full season of Freid. It is risky no doubt. We possibly need to fill at least 1 rotation spot if Morton leaves, This situation would require you to replace at least 2 or 3.

I'm having a hard time seeing why the angels would make that move. I would want some big time prospects, not a guy about to get paid

Ohtani while he is great isn’t gonna bring you the biggest return ever. He’s a FA in a few months and will be the highest paid player in MLB history so nobody is gonna mortgage the farm for that unless you are Preller and we see how that has worked out.

I would think you could get a good prospect. Besides the fact he's an outstanding dual player, he will also put butts in seats, and I think owners care about that.

More teams have become a little smarter about trading future wins for current ones. The Dodgers wouldn’t trade the future for a guy that close to FA when they know they can wait and get him in the offseason for just money. The Angels are gonna want a haul bc he’s the only guy like him and can help you on both sides of the ball.

Yeah the Angels GM would be lynched if he traded Ohtani. Even if they were 10 games back it would be hard bc they pack the place just to see him play. I really hope the Dodgers don’t get him in the offseason. Anybody but then.

Hope he stays in the AL so Ronnie has a clear path for more mvp runs

Dodgers have traded for rentals more than any team in recent memory.

I mentioned this in the game thread last night: would Cody Bellinger be available? What might the Cubs want for him?

I'm sure he is available and if i'm not mistaken only signed to a 1 year, prove it deal with the Cubs. If that is the case, the cost wouldn't be too high. However, there are a lot more teams that need offense than the Braves. I'd expect him to not be on our list of calls for this year.

Possibly in the offseason where he will only cost $$$

Angels can likely expect to get 1 elite-ish prospect (around top 30), maybe another top 100 type, and a lottery ticket.

If the cost was Grissom and 2 lottery tickets I’d do that but I couldn’t imagine adding Ohtani to this team.
