Making it look like I am doing on a rainy evening, less than an hour until close.....
Saw a few internet sites try to build a "Braves package" for Ohtani. Let me preface this by saying in no way in a million years do I believe we get him or even get the Angels GM to pick up the phone when he sees the Atl area code.....BUT for sake of conversation....
The sites build a deal around the Braves sending out Freid, Wright, Shuster, Grissom, Smith-Shawver or some iteration of that. If the Angels GM said that would be enough to pull the trigger, would you do it? At first glance, I thought no damn way. But the more I think of it, I could at least see the logic behind it...We have our entire core locked up for most of the rest of the decade, except for Freid and Wright. Wright has been struggling with shoulder issues this year which can be the kiss of death for a pitchers career. We got our magical year from him last season with 20+ wins and a decent showing in the playoffs. Freid is the one that is hard to let go. However, being that he is 1 year away from FA, it is surprising to not have him locked up at this point. You have to assume that we have already given him at least 1 or multiple offers that he has turned down quietly...That being that case, do you let him walk after next season and recoup a comp pick? The Braves have a good idea the number it will take to sign him and have obviously not come close to meeting that number, ala Freeman and Swanson. Being from CA, maybe makes it easier for LAA to resign him Grissom could be a good player, but doesn't seem to have a position here going forward outside of being a utility player. Shuster is organizational filler for a team like the Braves. Smith-Shawver is a wild card.
Again, not saying it would happen in a million years, but if that trade was on the table, would you pull the trigger?
