Trade deadline thread

Rangers are going to feel silly next year when deGrom and Scherzer are on the shelf and Houston is running circles around them and Seattle is back ahead of them.

Max will miss some starts to manage his workload but he’s basically made at least 75% of his starts every season of his career. Having him on basically the Charlie Morton contract for next year is very valuable.

Except Scherzer's gonna make over $40 million next year. More than double Morton.

Mets may keep Verlander.

Good news for us is that 2 of the top options for the Dodgers and Phillies are off the table with Arenado and Scherzer.

Mets are paying 35M of the rest of his deal. Texas only pays 22.5M (assuming Mets on hook for this year, and Texas pays that next year).

I like this move for the Mets just fine, but if they plan on competing next season, they’ll need to sign a starting pitcher and Scherzer on a one year contract would have been a fantastic option.

Between Nola, Yammanato, Urias, Giolito, Ohtani, Snell, among others, they should no problem finding someone to replace Scherzer.

Bellinger off the market. I assume that means the Cubbies are "going for it." I also assume that means Stroman is off the market, which is unfortunate as he was my favorite option.

Cubs beat up on 2 of the worst teams in baseball to get an 8 game winning streak going. They got fooled into thinking they were good.

The tight race for the second wild card probably puts a damper on the trade deadline more than anything else. Playoffs are (and pretty much always have been) a crapshoot and having the opportunity to make the playoffs likely overrides long-term thinking.

They still play in the 2nd worse division in baseball and are in 3rd place in that division. Fools gold.

Okay. Higher order wins take into account the opponent. The Brewers and Reds also play in the same division with worse expected winning percentages. That division is easily winnable for the Cubs with it being so poor, so you pretty much defeated your own point.

They aren’t winning that division. But we’ll see.
