Trade deadline thread

I'm thinking AA lets the deadline pass quietly. Way too many guys who could have helped us have gone for packages we could have easily beaten. I don't think he's willing to give anything up.

We shall see in less than 24 hours. We say the same thing at the deadline every year and he still surprises us

When you have the best roster in the sport, it becomes very hard to find upgrades. Hopefully AA can add at least 1 impact arm.

To reach the playoffs, the Padres would have to fight their way to a spot currently occupied by the Brewers or the Fish who have identical records, 57-49. The Brewers and Fish both have 56 games left.

If they go .500 the rest of the way, they'll finish with records of 85-77.

The Padres are currently 52-54. To tie our hypothetical Brewers and Fish record, they'd have to go 33-23. That's a .589 win percentage. To win outright they'd have to have a .607 win percentage

Currently, only Baltimore, Tampa Bay, and Atlanta have won at a .589 win percentage or better this year.

I don't think San Diego can reasonably expect to play at a .600 win rate the rest of the year. So they'll need other teams to play poorly. The Brewers have the second easiest schedule the rest of the way so they could be hard to catch. Then there's the fact that the Phillies are only 0.5 out in the wild card and are better than either the Brewers or Marlins. There's also the Cubs fighting ahead of you who have almost as good a run differential.

I know why San Diego wants to go for it. It's tempting. But they have to play out of their minds and have teams ahead of them face plant. I don't like their odds.

I don’t think anyone would be particularly surprised if a talented baseball team won at a .600 clip over a length of time. Regardless they’re in it and successful franchises that aren’t fire selling don’t raise white flags very often. Nor should they.

Selling off a contender in the race is being too clever if you want to know.

Arm thing is interesting. AA may be traumatized by the last couple of playoffs where he has been forced into a lot of pen games.

He also mentions if you don’t do it now you can’t get guys after the deadline for help of injury.

That said we typically use 3-4 starters in playoffs. We don’t need an arm to win the division.

Fried, strider, elder and Morton is pretty good. Maybe wright. I think you’d need a legit dude to get in there. Then maybe move elder to a once through the order long man in the playoffs?

Pen arms he always finds last minute. Prices come down last couple of hours.

Lf and dh are the areas I’d look at, but nobody obvious for us.

Right now ajss, Grissom and our first rounder is basically the farm

Mystery team(s) emerging for Justin Verlander. In other words “other significant interest” beyond the known Astros and Dodgers

:Bowman:

Today should be interesting. Wonder if any surprise names get traded that wasn’t talked about much. AA normally goes outside the box around the deadline. With so few holes it should be impact pitcher or nothing at all.

I would like a good RP AND good SP. Not sure it’s possible. But if you could find another guy like Iglesias last year, that would be huge and wouldn’t cost much in terms of assets. Then use real assets on the SP

I don't see us being in on Verlander at this point. Things around E-Rod have been quieter and that's more of an AA kind of move. Still, I expect the deadline to pass quietly. Maybe a bench piece or a middle reliever but nothing that moves the needle.

I'm a bit pessimistic about Eduardo Rodriguez. He was good the first half of the year, but got hurt and missed all of June. Since coming back in July he has a 5.66 ERA and only went more than 5 IP against the Royals. With his opt out next season, I think he would be way down on the list of guys i'd be after.

Agreed. AA is good at buying players like Iglesias last year. By having the financial power to pay the contract, we only gave up 2 guys who are no longer with the Angels. I'm sure there is someone out there AA could make a similar move on.

No one heard Iglesias may be available last season until the move was announced.

Yeah, he wasn’t on the radar at all which makes me hopeful of that sort of possibility again.

With Fried set to return this weekend you know we'll hear "getting Fried back is like trading for an ace." Stupid Braves fans will eat it up.

yes, that is a dumb comment. We were always getting him back so it really isn't an addition.. but it does factor into AA not getting another pitcher perhaps.. Wright too. If we can go into the playoffs full strength, then I like our pitching. With such a huge lead, I would like to skip guys going down the stretch (Mort/Elder/Strider).. Let Riggy have a few days off..
I wish we would replace Sorryio-- that is my dream today.. but I know he isn't eating that money by letting him go or rot on the bench.
