Trade deadline thread

Wait for Soto.

Braves will never sign Ohtani or Soto, but… if we were to go crazy and sign someone I think Soto makes some sense given he and Acuna are literally best friends and the LF fit is perfect.

But in reality the Braves will be smart and save that money for pitching.

With all the pieces the Braves have locked down at discount rates maybe Ohtani is the guy we go for. If we're gonna give up a first best to do it in a year where we have a bottom pick

If Dodgers sign him that team is going to be scary.
Freeman, Betts and Ohtani
Ohtani, Buehler and Kershaw

Freeman, Betts, and Kershaw are all on the wrong side of 30. Not sure how much longer you can realistically expect that trio to not only play at an elite level, but also stay completely healthy.

Betts just turned 30 so he’s going to be a problem for the rest of the Braves window I think.

I’m interested in bellinger for lf.

Statcast data is ugly for Bellinger. He's either a complete outlier unicorn that doesn't fit everything we know about baseball, or else what he's done this year is based largely on luck. The latter is far more likely.

only thing with him is that he is moving further away from the shoulder issues and that has to help him moving forward. Similar to Yelich, those things take a while to heal. Problem is he won't be cheap, but he might be able to repeat what he is doing but with better statcast profile.

The EV is what worries me. He's at a career low 87.1 MPH average EV for the year. That's the 16th percentile in MLB. His hard hit % backs that up. At 31.2% he's in the 11th percentile. Basically, he's not hitting the ball hard at all.

If you look at him from June 1 of this year on, his average EV is 87.2 and his hard hit % is 31%. Basically dead on with what he's done all year. So his contact isn't really improving much.

On the good side, he's striking out at the lowest percentage of his career and he's still a very good defender according to OOA and his arm is also extremely good.

I just don't know if a guy like Bellinger can be consistently successful hitting the ball so weakly.

Those numbers aren't that bad on the surface. They don't support his current line, but he's likely still an .800 OPS hitter even with some correction. When factor in the defense and baserunning, that's still a 4ish WAR player.

I think him making more contact is causing the overall weaker contact too.. his Xwobacon is closer to what I would expect from him next few years as he gets further and further past the shoulder issues. If he doesn't command a monster deal, I would take him.. that OF defense would be legit. Problem is I think he takes a 20-25+AVV for 4ish years... maybe cash in one more time around his early 30's.

Assuming he is an .800ish hitter, with his defense he'd be fine in center. If you move him to left, his defense loses a lot of its value and that .800 OPS isn't as exceptional. With Harris in center, we'd be wasting a lot of Bellinger's value.

I can agree.. Why I wouldn't want to pay that much for him. We are getting .750ish production with sub par defense for 8m... bumping that up 15m for slight improvements might not be worth it.

Eddie is by definition a replacement level player. So we are sort of over paying him at 8 million. If we could get Belli for 15-18, then I think you get value..

Even in any fantasy world where we sign Ohtani we aren't keeping him and Ozuna. Cuts to payroll would have to happen. Morton and Ozuna are the easiest and most likely cuts in that scenario.

Since the OF FA class doesn’t look good, would AA just pick up Eddie’s option and go with Eddie/Ozuna/Platoon partner in 2024 before fixing the position for 2025 when the first two are gone?

Just a thought even though I’m on the replace Eddie side. I know the farm system is still grim and needs time to be built up.
