Trade Deadline: What are you willing to do?

Where will the Astros play the Cuban player they signed yesterday?

Don't know. Based on what I've read about Bregman, I would put him at SS and move Correa either to 3B or the OF. Gurriel can probably play 3B or the OF as well.

Regardless, you don't trade Bregman to make room for a complete unknown.

"When he's ready to join the Astros, Gurriel will see time at third base -- with Luis Valbuena moving to first base on occasion -- and likely will see some action in left field, as well. He can also play second base, which would allow manager A.J. Hinch to use Jose Altuve at designated hitter more down the stretch and keep him fresh." Marwin Gonzalez' time will likely see a sizable reduction.

They just talked about it on mlb tv. They will use the dh (bye gattis) and have versatility

Gattis is now catching again and has hit almost .300 when catching with a .955 OPS. However, he has did very little as a DH outside of vs lefties. So this won't mean bye Gattis, however it may mean he catches more and starts at DH less. But either way Gattis is a nice piece to have PH on his days off (as we saw his time here in Atlanta) and obviously he hits a lot better when playing the field than when not doing so.

Wishful thinking by me then. I never thought gattis was a butcher

Gattis is also one of the few on Houston that has an OPS over .800 this year vs lefties. So they likely continue getting him in the line-up vs them whether that be at catcher or DH. They already have cut back on using him at DH and have been using a number of players along with him. So how much more they might do so likely will come down to results on the field, including who's hot and what not. But yea he'll continue catching for them through at least this year.

Gattis in 20 games catching has thrown out 43% of runners for Houston and has no passed balls against him this year. So I imagine they are liking what they see so far.

I'm thinking Meyers and Norris from the pads might be doable. Pads are ok with guys far away. Selling high on Meyers and low on Norris

There some other trade possibilities I'd kick the tires on at the deadline. One area is third. There is no urgency to get something done there given the free agency options that will be available. But I would check in on the availability and prices of Danny Valencia, Yangervis Solarte and Chase Headley.

I'd also check in with the Padres on a possible Kemp for Markakis deal. They have to equalize value by picking up salary in this deal.

There are three possible targets from the Pads: Kemp, Solarte and their catcher Derek Norris. If we did one-stop shopping and acquired all three in one deal here is my take on the three. Norris as I wrote earlier has an expected surplus value of about 4.5 wins before hitting free agency. Solarte's expected surplus value is about 4 wins. Kemp (keeping in mind the Dodgers pay part of his remaining contract) has an expected surplus of negative 7 wins. So the entire package has a positive expected surplus value of about 2 wins.

Markakis has an expected surplus value of negative 1 for the rest of his contract. So we have to send something their way worth about 3 wins. What do I have in mind. Something along the lines of Ian Krol and Chris Ellis would equalize things.

I don't mention Wil Myers in all this for a couple reasons. One is their ownership/management has made comments similar to the ones we've made about Teheran about wanting Myers around for their next winning club. He has talked about how much he likes playing in San Diego. And he also has said he much prefers playing first and that playing there has allowed him to focus on his hitting. He would be a nice fit for us in the outfield. But I think he is likely off the market or only available at an overpay, maybe an exorbitant overpay.

If we did Markakis, Krol and Ellis for Solarte, Norris and Kemp, our 2017 team would look like this:

Starting pitchers: Teheran, Folty, Wisler, Gant, one of Blair, Harrell, Baby Harang. With guys like Newcomb, Sims, Povse and Whalen starting the year in AAA or AA, but presumably coming into play at some point in the season.

Pen: 2 lefties from among Alvarez, Cervenka and Paco Rodriguez. 5 righties from among Vizcaino, FA signing, Winkler, Simmons, Withrow, Cabrera, Jenkins, Janas.

Lineup would be like this:

1. Smith in left (with Garcia occasionally spelling him)
2. Albies at second (start the season with a combination of Jace and a re-signed Gordon Beckham for service clock management)
3. Freeman at first
4. Kemp in right
5. Solarte at third
6. Inciarte in center (occasionally with Smith in center and Garcia playing left)
7. Swanson at short (start the season with D'Arnaud/Castro for service clock reasons)
8. Norris/Flowers at catcher

I am beginning to think Cleveland may do something desperate.

Under normal circumstances, unlikely this flies, but they are in danger of seeing it all crumble:

Braves send Inciarte, Viz, Krol and AJP and pay the money. Cleveland sends OF Clint Frazier.

I like Frazier and all, but that is selling low on Viz and Ender..

I would be looking to next year and trying to buy low on some SP where other teams may look to salary dump.

Maybe work a deal with Minnesota for one or more of Nolasco, Santana and Hughes. Maybe pick up Wander Javier as part of the deal.

Maybe work a deal with Pittsburgh for one or both of Niese and Locke.

I would start asking for more but would settle just for Frazier. Ender is a fourth OF on a good team. Viz may or may not be a closer. Right now he's a closer without a real track record.

I understand that.. but both are at pretty low points in value right now. I would think Ender can reclaim some value the rest of the year and if Viz gets healthy, should regain value after injury.

That's a big Braves overpay man

Ender probably is what he is...an elite defensive OFer who is too limited offensively to be much more than a platoon player or 4th OFer. He could be a defensive ace on a good team that has enough offense to cover up for him (which the Braves most certainly are not). Just like Simmons, who everyone was waiting to figure it out offensively, but has settled in as a sub-700 OPS guy.

There is a reason he is hitting in the bottom half of the lineup on the worst team in baseball...and it isn't because he is poised for an offensive breakout.

Inciarte and Mallex are completely redundant players, and one of them needs to be moved for another type of asset. The Rays are the kind of team that would value Inciarte highly, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a trade with them centered around Matt Moore.

If the Braves start the season with Inciarte and Mallex as everyday players, they will not be an 80 win team. The OF needs to be completely revamped, and one of Mallex/Ender needs to be flipped for a non-redundant asset.

I understand that.. but both are at pretty low points in value right now. I would think Ender can reclaim some value the rest of the year and if Viz gets healthy, should regain value after injury.

Or both could lose value. There is a very real chance that Ender is what he's showing now. That last year for him was an effect of playing in Arizona on a good hitting team and he had an abnormally good year. Viz could very well show that he isn't closer material. Or he could get hurt or have another suspension episode.

I know it's the fashion to believe in the Braves players, especially when the narrative starts out positive. "The Braves fleeced Arizona because they got both Ender AND Swanson AND Blair while Ender alone was worth almost Miller!" Ender gets a lot of goodwill without ever playing an inning and it's hard to come off that goodwill. While Olivera, even without the domestic violence issues, started the other way: " I can't believe they GAVE Wood (and others) away for a 31 YO who's never been in the ML!" It's easier to give up on Olivera, because he started in a perception hole while Ender keeps getting the love even though he really hasn't done anything to earn it as a Brave.

The Braves BADLY need a RH power OF bat who is ML ready (or close) and who is under control and hopefully not expensive.

Frankly, if I'm the Cleveland GM, Viz, Inciarte, Krol and AJP isn't enough. But, given the opportunity that faces Cleveland, they may decide it's worth it to go for it.

If Frazier turns into a bust, then it's a terrible trade for the Braves. If he becomes a better than league average RF and supplies some RH power to fit into the middle of the Braves ML lineup, then it's a huge win no matter what Viz, Ender and Krol ultimately do in their careers.
