Not really the way GMs are perceived in the new game unfortunately. There's been talk all season about the Gnats trading Scherzer for a haul and then re-signing him this winter. The only reason they won't is because he has his 10 and 5 rights and has already said he's not going to waive them. Cashman shipped Chapman to the Cubs for their run.
People around here constantly talk about how it's not a bad idea to trade Freeman instead of extending him. You'd have to be living in an alternate universe to believe that that would *iss ANY player off less than trying to get something for a guy who has been a "hired gun" for years. I agree Morton wouldn't be thrilled about going somewhere else, but expecting him to throw a tantrum and leave $7 million on the table is a little crazy IMO. It's a lost season here, and he's already done all the hard work of preparing for a long season and being away from his family for half of it. I can't imagine he'd be stupid enough to pass up that much money for just 3 more months when the hardest part of his work is already finished.
If you're going to play Moneyball, you play it all the way - otherwise you can't possibly expect to get the result you planned to. If you're going to unload your expiring assets, you unload ALL of them.
I don't EXPECT Alex to sell, but if he does I expect him to go big.
