Trades/acquisitions

He’s not rebuilding. We’ve had one of the most bad luck seasons I can remember. Acuna will be ready for ST and I think AA will bring back Freddie and get more more bat like Story this offseason.

We aren’t trying to rebuild of course, but the right injuries could force a mini roster rebuild. Heck…season isn’t even over yet. Hopefully everyone else stays healthy.

Who knows at this point what injury is next. Hopefully Anderson is good and just needs some rest.

Could be just bc he's old now, but his babip this season is about .070 less than career avg. He's still a positive player in fWAR even with the horrible start

Just because you sell doesn't mean you're rebuilding. Morton isn't signed past this season and could potentially bring back a nice player. And maybe we just get lucky and there's a team willing to over pay for a Will Smith or Swanson.

PawPaw asked would FF be willing to stick around for a mini rebuild. That’s what I was referring too. I’d be fine trading any of the players you mentioned. Especially Smith to clear that salary next year.

And if AA wants to shave several million off the payroll, he can trade him to the Yankees and Morton can decide to go home.

Alex doesn't "owe" him anything - he's trying to run a multi-million dollar franchise that Charlie isn't likely to be a part of 11 weeks from now. Would that hack off some of the players? Probably, but several of them may not be a part of the team in 11 weeks either. He's not responsible for paying fans who might get *issed about it on top of that.

It's super unlikely Morton plays for anyone other than ATL and Tampa. Other teams are likely quite aware of this too. And it would be dumb for AA to try to play some sort of career chicken with him. The money saved is irrelevant. That money won't be rolled over into next year and we would be down yet another starter with nothing to show for it in return, while at the same time pissing off players in the organization. It also gives AA a bad image around the league, which could affect future negotiations.

Not really the way GMs are perceived in the new game unfortunately. There's been talk all season about the Gnats trading Scherzer for a haul and then re-signing him this winter. The only reason they won't is because he has his 10 and 5 rights and has already said he's not going to waive them. Cashman shipped Chapman to the Cubs for their run.

People around here constantly talk about how it's not a bad idea to trade Freeman instead of extending him. You'd have to be living in an alternate universe to believe that that would *iss ANY player off less than trying to get something for a guy who has been a "hired gun" for years. I agree Morton wouldn't be thrilled about going somewhere else, but expecting him to throw a tantrum and leave $7 million on the table is a little crazy IMO. It's a lost season here, and he's already done all the hard work of preparing for a long season and being away from his family for half of it. I can't imagine he'd be stupid enough to pass up that much money for just 3 more months when the hardest part of his work is already finished.

If you're going to play Moneyball, you play it all the way - otherwise you can't possibly expect to get the result you planned to. If you're going to unload your expiring assets, you unload ALL of them.

I don't EXPECT Alex to sell, but if he does I expect him to go big.

We traded Tyler Nelsony to the white Sox, I won’t be surprised if the return is recently DFA’d Adam Eaton

I doubt anyone will trade for Eaton. They'll wait until he's released so they aren't on the hook for the portion of the $7 million contract Eaton signed with the White Sox. I would be surprised if there's the level of interest necessary in Eaton that would require a team trading for him prior to his becoming a free agent.

I have no clue what that 1st statement is even supposed to mean.

But all of your post is irrelevant when compared to Morton's situation. Morton was already willing to leave at least 10 million on the table this past off-season save for the Rays or Braves, so I have zero doubt he cares to leave mid-season if he's forced to go anywhere else.

I hope AA is willing to trade Freddie at the deadline. Especially if he thinks re-signing him is a long shot.

Im glad when I see the few here who look at the situation realistically when running a business instead of letting their baseball card collecting emotions enter into the picture.

FF is a no doubt tag. So you'd have to get much more than you'd expect with the additional pick. Who is giving up a haul for half a year of a 1B? I'd do it in a video game, in real life, I'm not sure you can get him back if you trade him.

I don't think AA trades FF. They don't seem to have a relationship where they can do a wink wink deal and look to bring him back.

I do not see many scenarios where the Braves are the top bidder on a 4+ year FA deal for an impact guy. The only ones I can think of is a depressed market (Ozuna....ouch) or surplus at a position (SS this year).

My name is AA. Im not trading any of my foundation players this season. Well, maybe Swanson if someone offered me something that would predict a winning finish to this season. Now the 1st question and probably the easiest, who is my starting rotation next year. Ill even concede that there are no more significant injuries, ie TJ surgery required? #2 Who is my catcher and Im accepting a cheap backup. #3 Who is my 1bm and if you say FF you lose because he IS NOT signed for next year. #4 Who is my SS and it may be Swanson since he is under contract but considering the strong strong outstanding FA class of SSs it is easy to see and upgrade. #5 Who are my OFers and before you go off about Pach/Waters and Acuna. What I have read is Acuna may be out 10-12 months which could mean half of next season. #6 Who do I get for DH? #7 That still leaves the bullpen. Other than Smith and Jackson is there even anyone else worth talking about good or bad?

That my friends looks and sounds like a rebuild or at least a very strenuous winter (or maybe just a fold up for 2022)

Draft picks may no longer be tied to FAs after the next CBA is agreed upon. The MLBPA absolutely hates the fact FA contracts are being dragged down by draft pick compensation, so I expect them to be fighting hard for that to go away.

It is very possible the Braves get nothing in return for Freeman signing elsewhere, so trading him to a contender with horrid options at 1B like the Red Sox or Padres might net a decent return. I would certainly like to be on the seller end of a Preller spending spree as he tries to catch the Dodgers, that's for sure.

You could still have compensation for lost free agents in a new CBA without the signing team giving up picks. As is it doesn’t really affect guys who will sign long term deals. It weighs more heavily on veterans looking for a 1 or 2 year.

I know the Padres farm is loaded, but what would a fair trade with them be for 2+ months of Freeman? Would CJ Abrams be too high, or would it be more in the Robert Hassell range?

The Padres have traded for just about every pitcher on the market. They still have a better farm system than we do. Go figure.
