I’m seriously asking here: at what age do you think people should be exposed to depictions of sexual violence or other similar subjects? Do we expect everyone to turn 18 and just catch up? The teens with access to this book also have this magical place called the internet where they can find much more explicit content.

Probably an issue better tackled by family and how they want to depict said issues no?

Sure, sounds to me like the parents could just instruct their child not to read that book then. For the parents that feel their child is ready for such topics, it’s great that they can freely borrow that book from the library!

It always fascinates me that the thing that gets you out of your slumber is almost always to defend sexual content for children... in this case, an incest spin to it

Honestly it’s because it’s one of the things I find to be most blown out of proportion by the Right. There’s always, always, always a conservative argument to protect the kids from some imagined threat, and it is used to justify some ugly actions.

I only hope Conservatives enforce it equally.

3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

Nothing like a father offering his daughters to be gangraped.

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her. 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her. 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Hey boys, you can rape any virgins out there!!!

Define blown out of proportion.

That it's not happening, or that it's happening is not a big deal?

And what are the "ugly actions"

The answer, like with a lot of k12 issues, is universal school choice - if parents are unhappy with the library curation policies at their children’s current school, they’d have a mechanism to transfer them somewhere else.

But but but that’s racist !!!

Do you think that the tobacco and alcohol industries should be able to market to children? I mean parents can instruct their children not to smoke or drink right? Social media websites? No need for age limits on that either?

And what about Movie and Video Game ratings, which require you to be a certain age to purchase a ticket/game? How is a book any different than a movie in that respect?

Not to mention, the internet on school computers in the library is going to have a content blocker on it. But no one yells “they’re banning the internet!” the way they yell “they’re banning books!” whenever something is taken off the shelves (Not putting mqt, for the record)

Should we allow middle schoolers to drive a car because they can drive a golf cart ?

Just don't ask him for evidence of media reporting that said Trump was guilty of colluding with Russia. There's so much out there but no one can ever show it to me apparently.

Then why is it so hard to show me. What you people do is claim that anyone who reported on the stories related to the investigation was saying he was guilty. Which is just revisionist history. The overwhelming majority of the coverage was fair. Like the Pulitzer prize winning articles Trump claims were fake yet no one can tell me which ones were fake. The only issue ever raises was that a story about how the investigation started might not have been accurate, which even if it isn't wasn't declaring Trump guilty or anything.

The Russia coverage with Trump by the media was infinitely more fair to him than the right wing media coverage of Biden and Ukraine.
