death threats happen a lot... so I'm sure you can point to other cases that resulted in a penalty of north of $100M to the offender. looking forward to seeing it
 
Most of it was punitive damages. Probably wasn't a good legal strategy to admit fault then double down on the defamation. Rudy was just last week telling media outside the courtroom that his false claims were true. That type of behavior is why the punitive damages are so high.

Rudy's attorney compared election denialists to flat earthers. Don't think the base is too warmly disposed to chipping in to help defray the big price tag of the big lie. Bad luck for Rudy.
