TUESDAY FINAL THREAD 5/9 .... Acuna debuts big in AA

Definitely an odd move. There isn't a real need for him until 2019 (the Kemp/Inciarte/Marakis OF is not the reason the Braves are awful), so I don't understand the rush.

The optimistic view is that promoting/demoting guys in the minors comes with very little cost (as opposed to promoting them too early to MLB as they did with Swanson), so if he struggles in AA it isn't a huge deal. Absolute worst case scenario he struggles in AA and is demoted back to A+, just like Albies struggled in AAA last year and was demoted back to AA where he continued to have success.

Unless they intend to move one or both of those guys before then (which I hope is the case).

So you would be in favor of salary dumping Kemp or Markakis to make room for Acuna's age 20 season when the Braves will still be projected to be sub-.500?

I would be in favor of trading Nick at the deadline this year and replacing him with DPete. Kemp isn't a free agent until 2020. I would hope they would get something for him before then. That would still give Acuna 1-2 more years in the minors (which would be about right if he keeps doing what he's doing).

I agree this is odd though it's another strong indicator that this is the new rule, never more the exception.

If you play well and are a legitimate prospect, you will be promoted.

If Maitan is the real deal, I think there's a good chance we see him up as a teenager.

Correct, in my head I had Neck and Kemp leaving at the same time.

I think we will see Acuna in RF opening day 2019, even though I'd prefer to see him held down a few weeks to gain the extra year of control.

I wonder who takes Weigel's spot in the AA rotation. They could move Mader out of the bullpen to take it, but with their aggressive moves lately, maybe Pike or Gohara?

Looking at these moves, Anderson? Only half-playing... perhaps drew Harrington

This wreaks of the FO rushing players to save their jobs. They are going to pin this poor season on Snit, fire him, and claim the next wave is in AA/AAA and will be called up soon.

Why?
Acuna I can see. He's young. He's done ok but not great. K/BB not very good. But he seems to be mashing the ball. It's possible they want him to go against better pitchers where he has to show more patience. He could still be a in AA next year for a whole year. He doesn't have to be the fast track guy. The Braves seem to want to push ppl until they fail.

Weigel I can't see the complaint. He's a college guy. Guys from AA go strait to the majors now so I don't see the difference between him being in AA vs AAA. Maybe they want to see him in a less pitcher friendly park.

It seems like everyone thinks Weigel is going to be a good 4-5. I don't see anyone saying hes a TOR guy. Not even super posi braves, but maybe you will prove me wrong. The guy is almost 23. Why not set him up to come in and pitch after the deadline to get his feet wet and get some firsts out of the way?

You can disagree about the time table, but it's clear the Braves think they should be winning ASAP. SO if you think Weigel is your 5th starter next year, then why not move him up and play him? We'd have him through age 28 anyway, right? And he's a pitcher w/o a big signing bonus but so you might be able to extend him through age 30 for cheap if he's a good 4-5.

IF DPete doesnt lose his power from that injury (don't a lot of ppl lose power for a year with that injury) I'd love to see him earn a spot in RF.

If I could get something of value for Kemp I'd deal him and put Lane Adams out there. I just don't believe in Kemp long term and he makes too much money.

I wouldn't play Acuna until he's banging down the door or at least 22. But the team has much more data than I do.
