touki last ten starts. not so bad, lots of walks.. he just turned 21 so still plenty young.

Yeah, the walks have ticked back up, but this has still been a really positive year overall for him. As his peripherals are normalizing, his ERA is gradually coming down. He's actually pitched a little worse than he did to start the year, but overall a positive step. Next year is huge for him.

I agree completely. It's not uncommon at all to keep guys you believe will eventually move to the pen in starting rotations in the minors to give them innings to work on their stuff. You keep him in the rotation for that if nothing else. Maybe he takes a big leap forward and shows he can stick in the rotation. Completely possible.
 
I believe I read where Touki was limited to throwing from the stretch, no full wind up, not sure if that is still the case or not
 
Touki has had a fantastic developmental year. No need to contemplate anything other than starting right now.

Didn't everyone say the same thing about Newk? Yet here he is, walking just as many at the MLB level as he was in the minors.

Touki is young, but let's stay realisitic...he is wild because he is wild. He needs to improve, not the umps.

Newk is way less wild so far in the Majors. He has 14 BB and 2 were intentional and at least 2 more were selectively intentional. This is a stat sheet scouting comment at its best. Newk in his short sample size has been more victim of command not control. He has been getting ahead of most hitters.. He has only gotten to 3 balls on 29 hitters. That is not coming up and being wild

Agreed. I don't know where this talk about better umpiring has come from. It makes logical sense that umps in the majors are better, but couldn't that also mean umps in the minors are more inclined to call a ball a strike as well?

We have plenty of history to show that pitchers don't suddenly start walking fewer batters once they hit the majors.

Well, considering that all of our scouting of Newcomb in the minors was stat sheet scouting...

Newcomb hasn't really been wild, no. But he has walked more than you like. Command or control, it's an issue he needs to continue to fix.

Not true really. I have watched countless Newk starts.. and there is a huge difference. Watch his start.. when he starts missing away and up to righties, his Control is gone. That happened a lot in the minors.

Look at his minor league games where he had 4+ walks in 6 or fewer innings. Those are the games where Newk just didn't have control. We have yet to see that Newk. The newk we have is he gets ahead 1-2 and can't get his pitch where he wants it. then goes full and loses him. He has only gone 3-0 on 5 guys.

I am not saying Newk is the second coming of Maddux. He has a long way to go to prove himself. But I think he has benefited from better umpiring, better catching, and better scouting/planning. Things that he has in the MLB world that he didn't in the minors. What I want to see from him is better command..(when Flowers calls for a fastball up.. get it there) and mastery of a third pitch. If he even gets halfway there for both, he will be scary good.
 
I think if Wisler passes tonight's test, then Coppi needs to be aggressive with trading I-Me... the piggies are a home run hitting team and that has been Wisler's Achilles heel. Wisler would have earned a spot in the MLB rotation if he fares well tonight... IMO
 
I always find it amusing when someone's defense is "I saw it, and even though the numbers don't support it, I know what I saw".

Anyways, there will always be folks that blindly defend certain players. Newk apologists are no different, obviously.

Doesn't change the fact that Touki has terrible control and need to fix it. Getting better umps is a pretty poor idea to fix his control.

who said I saw it. I believe I posted numbers that backed my assertion. I made no mention of Touki.

It doesn't really. I just think better umpiring can help a pitcher overall. Just like having Flowers stealing strikes for you can help. or the fact that hitters are generally taking your first pitch.. Or....

No one can point to one thing as a causation. I know a guy walking 5 guys/ 9 innings isn't going to drop to 4/9 just because the Umps are better. That won't happen...ever...

This whole tangent started because someone said Touki will be better with better umps. I stated the same was said for Newk...and he is still walking guys.

That's why Touki is still being mentioned.

Then you jumped in to defend Newk's control for some reason haha.
