TWO Modest proposals

1) Headline on MLB.com is that Yankees are heading towards a major selloff. IF they start dumping contracts, might we want to take Brian McCann off their hands -- especially if they help pay his deal? Who else might we grab?

2) If the Red Sox continue to be truly desperate for a starting pitcher -- and they are -- if we send them Teheran, might we get Moncada and allow them to dump the contract of, say, Craig Kimbrel? Add Viz and ask for Benetendi too?

While it would be nice to see McCann in a Braves uniform again and we do need a catcher, he looks like he's pretty clearly on the decline. I think he and the Braves would be better served if he went to another AL team that could let him move to DH full time in another year or two.

While I think the Red Sox would be happy to have Vizcaino, I don't think they're looking to move Kimbrel. He's not that expensive, especially for a team with as much money as the Red Sox, and he is still one of the best closers in baseball. To be honest I'd be thrilled to get Moncada and Benintendi for Teheran and Viz, but I think that's probably a pipe dream.

Yankees would need to pitch in about 20 million for us to take him on. The days of us taking on terrible contracts are gone. Mac would be an upgrade for us, but we could likely sign someone like Ramos or Wieters this offseason for what Mac has left on his contract (including the option year).

I've always been fan of bring McCann back. I won't give up a top prospect to get him regardless of how much money came back with him. I think a combo of McCann and Flowers would shore up the catcher position for the next several years

I doubt the Braves and Red Sox trade with each other.

yankees...I wouldn't give anything of value for McCann.

Red SOx....maybe wrenn would keep us from trading. I don't think the Sox would deal devers or moncada. But I think we fit up well b/c we can be a one stop shop for all of their problems.

I could see a deal centered around Moncada/Rusney for Julio/Markakis. There'd be some cash and prospects involved of course.

I honestly don't see a scenario in which we match up that doesn't mean
a)they gut their farm system of quality and don't include Moncada
b) include Moncada and not much else

I doubt they would be really into either option.

I'd LOVE to take Mac off their hands. He's not the hitter he once was, but he's a fan-favorite, has power and he's a pitcher catcher for the young guys.

I would be ok taking McCann.

I don't see any way the Red Sox give us Moncada, Benintendi, and Kimbrel for Teheran and Vizcaino. That's pipe-dream talk. I would imagine Moncada is essentially off-limits.

I think he would do well splitting time with Flowers. Two good guys to mentor the young pitchers. Keep the position decent while waiting for a couple of young guys to emerge. What's not to like?

Sadly, I agree. If we could get Moncada for either of the two, and quite frankly, both of them - I do it.

You will have to give up a pick to sign either one of them. Personally, I'd rather have Mac and transition to a younger guy (Brett Cumberland/Lucas Herbert) in 2-3 years.

Considering we're supposed to have a short porch in right at Suntrust, Mac would probably do really well for us.

I think if Atlanta could get something of value for taking on a 2017 contract it still would be a good idea particularly if the player had some remaining possibility of production.

We were reportedly still looking to take on bad contracts early this season. I doubt we'd have pivoted away from that position so soon.

Markakis for McCann

I looked at their contracts because this seemed to make some sense for me, but I'm worried about McCann's 2019 option that vests automatically as follows:

"2019 becomes player option if McCann: 1) has at least 1,000 plate appearances combined in 2017-18, 2) starts at least 90 games at catcher in 2018, and 3) does not end 2018 season on disabled list"

Maybe Cumberland would be able to step in part time by 2018 to transition, but if we're planning to be competitive in 2019 I don't think we need to risk paying $15 million to a 35 year old McCann. Aside from that though, seems like a good idea.
